Is it a good or bad thing that cheat codes do not really have a role in modern gaming?

I think that the Single player modes should have some cheat codes just for some hilarious moments, but that's it.

I like GTA IV's style to it, that it takes away Trophies and Achievements if you use them.

Pretty much a good thing, cheats spoil the game.
But it was still an option to use them?
Let me refraise that.

But it was still an option a temptation to use them?
Fair point.. there must have been a few games i have ruined due to using cheats as soon as it was inserted into the disk drive..

However.. GTA IV what the hell happend to those 10 buttons people knew better than the order of the alphabet?? Fucking mobile cheat inputting system..

However, i do apologise sir.. I do actually enjoy games more, when the option temptation is not there..
Eugh. GTA4... That game fucked my ps3 up the arse.
I just like games that make you damn well play it, if your going to cheat your way through it theres no point in playing it at all.
I wouldn't have agreed with you a year ago.. But now i do, thinking back i really wasted a games longetivity with cheats..
Thats why they stopped developing them for a lot of games (outside the PC gaming industry, the hackers/modders would just cheat anyway.) All tthe developers could see is people buying the games and returning them like a week later after being bored with the collosal power the cheats had given them.
Which would be also why cheats can be unlocked in games nowadays, like get 1000 heashots and you get a cool gun for example

I prefer no cheat codes in any games. I never ever use them.

I AM pretty sick of reading cheatcodes for games these dyas, only to find that they're just bloody instructions on how to unlock the tophies or achievements. Though, that being said... It might have something to do (with the exception of Dragon Age) with today's games just being too freaking easy. They practically hold our hand these days as we tip toe through the tulips and out post-apocalyptic wastelands and such.

Red Faction Guerilla does the exact same thing, if you use cheats that you've managed to access in game.

Cheats where fun, and there's no real reason not to have them. Oh wait there is. Trophies, Achievements and DLC. I miss cheats.

Even though I used to ove cheat code...god the cheat cartridges were funny.
It did annoy me how they would fuck up the game occasionally, so no not to upset that they arn't around anymore...only game cheats are really any good for anyways were Pokemon and GTA XD

I don't understand how people can say this? I play every game I have with cheats (except for mp games >.>) but I always play through without cheats the first time. How is it not fun to be able to walk up and beat a machine gunner to death with a hammer without taking any damage? <3 /god

Anyway I rarely used the cheat codes, I prefer trainers.

Then those aren't cheat codes. The codes that let you play as a clown in your favorite FPS or splatter paintballs all over the wall aren't for cheating and therefore aren't cheat codes. But God Mode, all weapons, and unlock all levels, are for sissies. Penisless sissies.

I do agree to a certain level. For example in Age of Empires it was awesome destroying a whole army of romans with a rocket launcher mounted sports car, but after I knew the cheat it did kinda wreck the game for me and so I decided to not touch codes when it came to Age of Empires II

yes it's a bad thing, luckily some games still have them like Saints row and Saints row 2 (although it disables achievements)i can't think of any others though, maybe GTA4?

I think console commands on pc games are pretty much the cheat code equivalent these days

*off to cheat code around on starcraft*

I miss cheat codes in single player games. Sometimes I don't want a challenge, sometimes I just want to blow off a little stress by laying waste to half a city with godlike powers in say...a GTA game.
As for the "Well I don't happen to like cheat codes, so games shouldn't have them" argument, how selfish is that? I don't like guitar hero games, but I don't think they should be done away with. If other people enjoy something, let them have it, if it's not for you, no ones forcing you to use it.

(There is of course no excuse for using cheats in multiplayer, that just ruins everyones fun)

OT:I miss them a little.See my GTA example.

good, because a lot of modern gaming is multiplayer. however, there are still those jerks who exploit glitches in the game.

I miss them, to a large point that I've been meaning to write up a long article and post it here on the board. Yes, cheating is bad when you're in multiplayer, but in single player, you're hurting no one but yourself.

However, cheats are also less interesting over the years. Part of the fun of cheat codes were thier strange nature. The "enemies bursting into tires" thing is what I mean. They weren't always infinite lives or infinite ammo. Although, those two cheats have a large part in games as well.

I wish they were unlockable, or perhaps trophies could be used to unlock cheats. Used to, cheats were awarded to people when they did things in games, now it's trophies. But trophies are worthless, unless you're playing Assassin's Creed II.

I loved GTA for thier cheat codes, the absurdity of some of them. Big head mode doesn't seem like that much of a change in a game but it can be pretty funny.
