Im bringing this up because I've seen lots of people on forums who think they are cool because they hate popular games, like Halo 3 or GTA4. I personally dont think its cool to hate popular games, because you cant force your opinions onto others without some kind of backlash in the form of a fanboy war. I just wanted to see what everyone else thought.

I think some people do it because they are sick and tired of hearing about it.

I hate things because I find reasons to. Not to look popular.

Hey, I have a strong hate for EA and Halo, but I don't think it makes me cool. I just happen to not like either of them. And it's not their popularity that makes me hate them, it's other things. I don't spam about my feelings.

Which is ironic because when you do that on forums you just end up getting more people to talk about whatever you hate.

But yeah besides being sick of things people tend to hate stuff just to be different, which is another irony.

I don't do it to look popular, because that is just a bit stupid.

Now, I don't voice my opinions of 'popular' games.

I often wonder the same, but it's cool to be the underdog, so screw mainstream, popular things?

People hate on a lot of popular things. I just think its a big waste of time, if its so hated why devote so much time to it? EA, twilight, the Wii, Halo...you name it, its all been hated on needlessly before.
Amen to this.

Though flamers in general are obnoxious.

To the OP: Who knows... who knows... Maybe because they don't coincide with that individual gamer's personal taste, or because they hate those 'popular' games to seem cool and original. I'm sure there are plenty of reasons, and plenty of exceptions.

It boils down to simple math.

Anything is going to be disliked by a percentage of the people exposed to it. Popular materials are generally exposed to more people so the number of people in that percentage is, logically, higher.

It's only natural for there to appear to be more people that hate popular games.

I don't think it's cool, but a lot of people think it's cool to hate popular anythings. Seriously, just look at anything popular and see if it has a hatedom. You'll see my point.

I don't hate Jack Thompson, Creationists, Sarah Jessica Parker etc because i think it's 'cool'. I hat them because I think they're crap, or dangerous to humanity (see the above three).

Same goes for popular games. If I think they're crap, I hate them. Or point and laugh. Simple.

Some people certainly think it is cool to trash popular games/movies/music. I think what's coolest however is to know yourself well enough to like what you want and accept that others don't. That's just my opinion.

Let's see, some people might hate them because it's mainstream, some people might hate them because they're not interested in them, but some friend/relative/random guy on the street can't shut up about them.

And then there's the people who played them, found them boring, and therefore "dislike" them. Many of these people tend to say they don't like the game if asked, but they don't go around preaching about how bad it is. Unfortunately, even though I think the majority of people fall within this group, it's the vocal minority who are in the spotlight most of the time.

But remember, even if someone say they don't dislike a certain game, that doesn't mean they automaticly hate that game because it's popular. I get a bit angry when people say that I dislike "game-x" just because it's popular. Yep, it has happened.

There is in most cases (not all...but most), a distinct correlation between overrated-ness and popularity. It is this overrated nature in things that I truly find annoying.

I actually know several people that think they are only cool if they deny anything that is popular regardless of whether it's actually good or enjoyable.
I've always thought that to be just as closed minded as hopping on the bandwagon just because something is popular.

The sad thing is, usually things that are really good will eventually become popular, even if it's quite some time down the road from their initial appearance, eventually word gets out and people start playing, listening to, reading it.

The whole thing is just another ridiculous and pointless game in and of itself if you ask me.

I have to agree with you here. Unfortpunately, this is the way things work, probably because publishers prefer to hype games rather than give them more development time. I.E. Halo 3.

No its not cool to hate popular things. What 'cool' to my mind is basically a synonym for whats 'in' or 'popular', so just because I like european metal bands no ones ever heard of doesn't mean I'm 'cool', in fact lots of people dont like me and I have no friends.

People who think other dislike popular things to be 'cool' generally are close minded and only think this way because its the only justification they can come up with for how someone could possibly not like something. Maybe they don't like that particular popular thing just... because... its possible you know! I mean I don't like beef stew and trust me that is NOT because it makes me cool...

That would make sense, except that 90% of the time that we hear about it it's people bashing it, especially considering that it's generally the same games over and over.

When I hate something that's popular, it's either (1) not publicly announced or (2) a complete coincidence with regards to how I naturally feel.

For example, I never hated on Twilight because -others- were. In fact, when I first began to feel this way, I thought I was one of the few. Also when I publicly announced that I disliked the praised-game "Mafia", I did so because I couldn't fathom in the least how others could love it so much (AKA, just didn't really like the game at all)

As for 'Popular game X' and 'Popular game y', well, I never saw a need to announce it publicly so, well, I didn't. Also, with those games it's more of a 'dislike' than 'hatred'. It's hard for me to 'hate a fad/anything' unless it's actually affected me personally.
