It's not cool to hate things simply because they are popular. However, a great many things are popular despite being terrible, and it is very cool to hate things for being terrible.

Popularly hated-on things that I also hate include: Halo 3 (pale imitation of the series' former greatness), and Guitar Hero 3 and every GH game since (pale imitation of the series' former greatness).

Everything i hate i have a reason for. Granted the reasons are normally completely opinionated, but hey. I got wickedly flamed on the thread "games where you hate the character you play as" for stating my opinion. Some of the characters on the list aren't even in relevant games

Also when I publicly announced that I disliked the praised-game "Mafia", I did so because I couldn't fathom in the least how others could love it so much (AKA, just didn't really like the game at all)
*Gasp* You disliked Mafia?

No, it's not. And claiming a big game is being shoved down your throat is one of the biggest BS arguments in gaming today.

I don't get people who hate things that are popular. If I dislike something, I have a reason behind it, as opposed to "because it's popular".

Unfortunately =/

Although if it makes you feel any better, I never played it until 5 months ago. Meaning, it's kind of understandable, since the game came out in 2002. Also, Mafia 2 looks badass.

Ah, right. I suppose it has aged quite a bit. And yes, Mafia 2 is looking pretty sweet! I'm still hoping they won't mess up the great movie-like atmosphere that made the first game as awesome as it was, but it looks like they've got it right once again, having seen one or two cutscenes.

It's not cool to hate. Peace. Love. And all that other crap.

It's perfectly fine to dislike something, or to even point out your criticisms, but to jump on a bandwagon just for "just because" is nonsensical. At least try them out first.

Let all video games earn the right to your hatred! I do the same with people.

The old 'shit must be good, because a million flies cannot be wrong' adage can get VERY annoying sometimes.
But it's civil to keep the rage under wraps when in the presence of a fan.

I don't get the mentality here. Why is hating a popular game "cool"? If I hate a game it's because I hate the game. Mortal Kombat, for example, even in it's heyday sucked ass in my book. I don't feel that way because I wanted to be cool, I just hated the game and everything in it.

I just don't understand the thinking here... sorry.

No

I don't think it's cool to hate anything, besides humans suffering, rapist, murders, pollution and the such.

Sure, that's what you think, you hate it, and there's a whole group that shares your hating opinion. But I'll just go enjoy it now.

Is it? Yes.

Should it be? No.

Sadly not everyone has the brains to figure that out, even on here.

I think some people do it because they are sick and tired of hearing about it.
That makes no sense at all. If you really really dislike something then the last thing you want is to hear more about it, by bitching you are bringing it up and also going to cause people do disagree with you, continuing the discussion about it.

If you dislike something strongly enough then you try not to think about it.

I don't get how you can't understand it. He is not saying that everyone who hates a game does it to be cool, but there most certainly are those that do.

A game gets hated by a popular person, maybe with a trilby, and all of a sudden you can't go into a thread without somebody bitching about the game using almost exactly the same words.

True, but that's the opposite extreme, which is just as bad.

Perfect.

It's not like I hate it because it's popular, but it ends up being popular for reasons I hate.

Or I hate it because it makes things that are better but less marketed unpopular.

:/

its justifiable to hate games that are popular due to previous success i.e. COD, PRO, Halo
however if the games are actually good then obviously thats just stupid

Im bringing this up because I've seen lots of people on forums who think they are cool because they hate popular games, like Halo 3 or GTA4. I personally dont think its cool to hate popular games, because you cant force your opinions onto others without some kind of backlash in the form of a fanboy war. I just wanted to see what everyone else thought.
I dunno, I hate Super Smash Bros., and I feel pretty cool.

I hate it for legitimate reasons, though, such as its simplicity and overwhelming popularity with young children in my area.
