Is it time to buy a PS3?

I have a 360 from launch, which I think is great, some fantastic games.

I have a wii, ugh, so boring, I don't find any of the games much fun, only Ghost Squad, I'll probably enjoy House of the Dead Overkill.

I wonder if it's time to get a PS3, sadly Sony have dropped so many features, usb ports, backwards compatibility etc. I HATE the controllers. However, LBP, Killzone 2 and some older games I'd like to play; Uncharted, Heavenly Sword.

Just getting a new HDTV so I wondered if it's time to take the plunge and get a PS3. £299 LBP bundle with Far Cry 2. Though I wonder if Blu-Ray will ever come down in price, I'm not prepared to pay over twice the price of dvd when upscalers really make DVDs good enough.

The most basic litmus test for whether you should be owning a Wii, probably, is whether you enjoyed Super Mario Galaxy. Still, have you played No More Heroes, Trauma Center, Zack & Wiki, or Endless Ocean yet?

You need to think differently, instead of dropping so many features, think that they were not needed in the first place.

Take a look at the Controller connectivity, original plans had 7 controller ports via wifi, they scaled it down due to the fact it was needed, it was just a marketing ploy, its backfired in a big way though, what with people complaining of the PS3 not having the functionality that it stated it should have.

Even though we will never have our entire gadgets collection all plugged into a PS3 at any given moment.

Super Mario Galaxy was okay, it was quite fun in a lot of areas but it felt a bit tired. I thought they could have done more with the planetary gravitational fields. Don't get me wrong what they did do was fantastic. Mind you I haven't finished it yet!

Wii games I have:

Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
Ghost Squad
Wii Play
Wii Sports
Warioware
Metal Slug Anthology
Super Mario Galaxy
Wii Fit
Rayman Raving Rabbits

Even if you have the money Its not worth buying a PS3. their's nothing IMPORTANT it can do that a 360 cannot. Also the games are more expensive, there are less of them and there never will be as many.

I think that this year is going to be very important for the PS3. There are a myriad of awesome games coming out, albeit not all are exclusives. The Wii seems to be branching out in terms of the games they are releasing for various demographics, so don't discount it just yet.

I would highly recommend getting the SF4/Killzone 2 PS3 bundle if you are indeed interested, with Killzone 2 being a major landmark for the PS3.

We turn the "6" in "2006" over. Everything of what you said is subjective/objective/whatever means "your opinion".

But anyway, there's a simple quiz that can help you choose.

Are you interested in a PS3?
If yes, continue with the quiz.
If no, stop right here.

Does the PS3 have any games you want that are not available on another platform?
If yes, go on with the quiz.
If no, stop right here.

Do you have enough money for a PS3?
If yes, go to 1.
If no, go to 2.

1. Buy a PS3
2. Save up for a PS3.

Obviously there's more to it than this, but the basic gist of this is that if the Ps3 has games that personally interest you then go ahead and get one.

The PS3 is the PS3. I chose not to buy one when they discontinued backwards compatibly with PS2 games on top of cost.

You HATE the controllers? Surely, It's pretty much the same layout as the previous two generations. I'm sure you were okay with them and could get back on board for the excellent games SONY's machine has coming out.

Having all three consoles could be sweet.

Personally, I'd wait a few months. By then the price could come down and you'd be able to get a Playstation before Sony goes backrupt :\
SONY going backrupt. I wouldn't hold your breath for that. Do you really want them to though?
I reckon buy a PS3 and help them out.

Exactly! I hate the PlayStation controllers! The analogue sticks are horrible, why are they not convex! Also, the shoulder buttons are uncomfortable. I find I still get sore thumbs using the D-Pad. But it's not a deal breaker, I'll get used to it again like I did with the PS3.

I doubt Sony will go bust.

I'd get a PS3 if I were you, even though you hate the controllers. More quality games = good, am I right?

In my view, the answer is coming VERY close to yes. I didn't buy an Xbox 360 until there was a sufficient stable of games that I couldn't play elsewhere built up (at the time, the Xbox was the cheaper route to several of the games).

Now that Blue Ray has won the format war (which surprised the hell out of me, honestly given Sony's track record at introducing new formats), the blue ray functionality is certainly a big draw. And Sony's exclusive stable is getting downright enviable with MGS4 (which doesn't interest me but I can recoginize the appeal), Resistance 1 and 2, Little Big Planet, and the upcomming Killzone. At this point, if I suddenly have the expendible cash to purchase the PS3, I'll probably get one. That still probably won't be anytime soon as I think I'll be replacing my PC before I get a new console.

Genius. Follow the consumer guru's quiz. You can't fail.

That would be your opinion sir. Games more expensive huh? Really well you just point me to a copy of WaW on the PS3 that is more expensive than a 360 copy then I'll agree with you and light my PS3 on fire.

On Topic: I say go for it. I have a PS3 and a 360 and I love both of them, especially now you will get the exclusives from both parties. Best way to be a gamer ever when some one says "GoW" you ask "God of War or Gears of War?"
Or is that just me.

Well they do try really really hard to screw everyone with their products. Also, I think when the next Xbox comes out they'll have lost. They just cant compete with that fan base. Even if they manage to bring out a newer console before Microsoft, their own fans would feel cheated and that would be a big money flush. Only way they can come back is if they skip a generation and launch some sort of viral campaign for a product that is sensibly better than it's competitor and at the same time cheaper. So far, I think they're still in the deficit, while Microsoft is starting to gain profit.

It's going to be a tough road ahead.
I can't and don't want dispute your speculation but when you say SONY couldn't 'compete with that fanbase' you're suggesting people wouldn't change manufacturer. If this was the case wouldn't the PS2 SONY fanbase be pretty intimidating when they move up to the current generation.

Also, as has been noted numerous times the PS3 sell rate over console life tracks or is faster than that of the 360. Their fanbase should/could be larger by the end of it's lifecycle which is reported to be longer than the 360. I would say, anything is possible especially in the economic climate.

It is not usual for SONY to be making losses so they could just shut it down. I doubt that though as videogame sales are seemingly less effected by the economic downturn than other industries.

I think maybe SONY should start charging for PSN, even if it's £10 a year. People would pay and it's untapped revenue that their competition is getting. Surely, this goes someway to making each 360 profitable.

Do you think that would lead to uproar?

I really do.
As a 360 owner, one of the 'perks' of a PS3 that is thrown at me often is the free online. It's touted often and everywhere. While adding a small fee would change that 'perk' to 'the online is cheaper', people would still be genuinely pissed.

I think it's a good idea for Sony to get some revenue, as you said, so I'm completely agreeing with you that they should start charging. But I do think that there would be some very pissed off people, and some noticeable backlash.

Blu-ray discs will come down in price, DVDs were the price Blu-ray discs currently are back in the day. Just to think, I paid nearly £20 for Godzilla, youthful ignorance how I miss you.

If you're getting a HDTV anyway, then I suggest you get one. I've had both a 360 and PS3 from launch and while I resented my PS3 for a few years, I now play it tons more than I do my 360. I've even come to love that silly controller.
So I say, if you can afford it, get it. There are some great games on there now, with even more due out this year, why not broaden your gaming scope?
