I read on this website (news.com) that recent studies showed that the majority of Americans are heavily ignorant of basic geography and that one third of Americans can't find America on a map. When i read this i thought that has to be dodgy. Is it?

The news will say anything to make people read it, I'd assume there are quite lot of people who can't find there country on the map it doesn't really mean much. I know people who can barely read but who are so incredibly intelligent thats its a little scary, there are different kinds of intelligence.

Oh, that's the kind of ignorant stereotype that just pisses me off.
It's just stupid to think that most Americans can't find America on a map.
Hell without looking, right now I can tell you that its right next to Iceland.

Ha!

You might want to fix your title there.

Since you clearly meant "can't", the answer is no. Basic education should at least cover this much.

Did they explain the study in full detail or reference where to find out more about it? Does the study compare numbers with other Countries? I hardly expect that the surveyors went door to door to every house in every state (and under every freeway shanty town)and asked the residents to point out America on a globe. For all we know they might've just pulled away the first 10 people exiting a T.G.I. Friday's in Newark and called it a day.

Why not call it that, or grade 9?

What was the age of the group studied? If it was middle school students or up, I'd say the results are fake. If it was a bunch of second-graders, I could understand the results.

Yeah it's true. It's also true that all black people are either pimps, gangsters or jazz musicians.
I started to get upset. Then I read the rest of the sentence.

On-topic: If it is true, that's fucking terrible. As large a country as the US is (not quite the magnitude of Russia, China, or even Brasil, but close enough) and people honestly can't find it?

I'd lean against insinuating that other cultures are intellectually challenged until I could form a grammatically correct and properly punctuated sentence. That being said;

No, it is not true.

Based on "one third of the population", I should know several people that wouldn't be able to find America on a map. As it stands, everyone I know, can easily find it.

It is far more likely that either

A) the study is a blatant lie

or

B) Most of the people they polled in their study, lied about their geographical skills, for humorous effect.

It is entirely possible that a small percentage of the population lacks the ability to find America on a map, however, it would be significantly lower than " one third".

Are you actually suggesting that people trolled a nationwide survey?
