Your topic title and post makes me wonder what percentage of Australians are illiterate...

Stupid stereotypes are stupid.

Literacy rate for people in Australia over 15 is 99%

so 1%

Reading that 2/3 of my countrymen are dumber than a sack of rocks motivated me to do those online map-quiz thingys until I could identify any country in the world on a blank map. Are you from Kyrgyzstan? Laos? Liechtenstein? Paraguay?

I will find you on a map. And if I can get the visas cleared and you put me up for a few nights, I might come visit you because I love a good adventure.

B) Most of the people they polled in their study, lied about their geographical skills, for humorous effect
Are you actually suggesting that people trolled a nationwide survey?
Yes, it a possibility.

Considering that teenagers and people in their early to mid-twenties, could easily find the question ridiculous to the point of them not taking it seriously. Could that, in addition to people who weren't paying attention, and people who actually couldn't find America, comprise one third of a study? Possibly.

However, I don't remember the OP mentioning "nationwide", or any other details of the study's population.

Also, I would point out that my first probability was that the study itself, was a fake.

So Americans went out of their way to pretend that they didn't know where their country was on a map out of sheer indignance, thereby skewing the statistics in favour of idiocy?

I think that one sorta works itself out.

If your question is legit, as in not meant to start one of the discussions internet is so famous for (a.k.a. needless), yeah, I agree with the people that answer that the "study" in question is, at the very least, inaccurate (not to say that there are MORE than a third that cant find it).
:-D
I bet that they can.

If your question is not, I'll have to say: Unless it is a map of the USA (but no guarantees).

Oh, that's the kind of ignorant stereotype that just pisses me off.
It's just stupid to think that most Americans can't find America on a map.
Hell without looking, right now I can tell you that its right next to Iceland.

Ha!
Hold on there! Be careful not to confuse Iceland and Greenland! According to "Mighty Ducks II", Iceland is green, and Greenland is full of ice!

From what I can remember, America is next to either the Pacific Ocean or the Atlantic Ocean...I'm not sure which.

I doubt it's only 1/3, but I do recall several students in my High School Geography course standing in front of a giant map at the front of the room looking for the United States around Australia, then South Asia, then giving up.... After a few students, someone finally located it.

Funniest shit I've ever seen.

I highly doubt one third of adult Americans can't locate their own country on a map.
You have to take into the fact that they survey about 5% of the total population then multiply the entire percentage they get up so that it equals 100%.

Isn't that spot on the map with the big letter going across it that read "U.S.A" I'm pretty sure thats where it is, below the other spot of land that reads "CANADA".

Though I hate geography, I can read a map thanks to my years in the cadets. Damn cadets and their tedious map classes. Thank god I paid attention though, my squad was the only ones to reach the first fucking check point, everyone else got lost. We were so skilled that we managed to get to the food point before the fucking food got there!

I dunno... but Geography was always my best subject... Freshman year, the only year got an A was in geography with 99.3%...<.<
really something from a C and D student...<.<
What the hell is freshman year? I've never understood that system.
First year in high school(Secondary school) is the freshman year, in the U.S...<.<
Why not call it that, or grade 9?
People do call it Grade 9. They're interchangeable, everyone will understand either Freshman or 9th grade over here.

It's a hell of a lot more interesting to say Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, than 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.

From any other source, I'd shrug it off as hyperbole. From a news source, though, I call it journalistic bloviation.

So, just because I am an irritating nerd, here's my two cents:

If you count children as citizens then saying 1/3 or Americans can't find it on a map might be closer to factual than people think. Not to mention, What Map? A map of the world? This hemisphere? This Solar System?

The question is phrased in a way to make ignorant people angry so to sell more headlines.

A group of Ausrtalians went to america and convinced around 100 people that the pyramids were in Western Australia and that the Eiffel Tower was in Queensland. But that wasnt a majority of Americans, but who the fuck doesnt know where the pyramids are?
