I read on this website (news.com) that recent studies showed that the majority of Americans are heavily ignorant of basic geography and that one third of Americans can't find America on a map. When i read this i thought that has to be dodgy. Is it?
You should prolly change the title since your OP and title kinda contradict each other. Or you're going to get some funny answers. That's like saying 50% of people who live in Australia live in Australia.

I'd lean against insinuating that other cultures are intellectually challenged until I could form a grammatically correct and properly punctuated sentence. That being said;

lol.
You realize they probably interviewed dozens of stupid-looking people in order to edit that together, right? I'm fairly certain I saw at least one rambling homeless person in that.
Still, it made me cringe.
As for the poll: it's incredibly hard for me to believe. Where I come from, ignorance of this level is heavily mocked and derided. As for other parts of the country...I don't know. It's possible. The fact that the tea party has such a large following leads me to consider it as a possibility, though a very depressing one.

A group of Ausrtalians went to america and convinced around 100 people that the pyramids were in Western Australia and that the Eiffel Tower was in Queensland. But that wasnt a majority of Americans, but who the fuck doesnt know where the pyramids are?
I think that was on show called CNNNN. That's what the chaser team did before chasers war on everything. If we're thinking of the same thing I'm pretty sure it was just one guy going up to randoms. He even convinced one women that the great wall of china was in Darwin.

Hahaha I remember watching that, I love it when the Chasers go to America. If I ever go to America I will go up to random people and ask them easy questions to see first hand if they really are stupid. They also convinced someone the Tower of Pisa was located in Australia and that it was actually called the Tower of Pizza.

Also my teacher visited America once for educational reasons to see what teaching was like over there and he told us that a teacher at a primary school thought that some Australians do ride kangaroos to school and so did the children.

I'm so sick of that kind of bullshit. Polls and statistics are bullshit. Those "on the street" surveys are bullshit. Statistics and the media can lie.

Let's say that's true. That would mean that 1/3 of the people I know should be unable to point out our country on a map. Thing is, I don't know anybody that stupid. So that means for the statistic to be true, it is only true within certain demographics. So, the raw statistic is untrue since it doesn't take into account WHO they polled. Perhaps it might true if it was said that 1/3 of all UNEDUCATED Americans can't point out our country on the map. That's where that fails. Raw statistics are without any form of value.

Also, those shows that try to embarrass people (mainly Americans). Don't forget the power of editing AND the fact that they obviously didn't include anyone that wasn't fooled.

You know one of my middle school teachers made my entire class learn the location and spelling of every state in the U.S. and the location and spelling of every country in the world.

Too bad I have such shitty memory but I'm pretty sure the USA is somewhere near France.
I'm joking. Please don't freak out

Whatever about the actual figure, I have a lecturer from Michigan in college and he has on several occasions spoken about the huge gap in knowledge of basic Geography between students he taught in Michigan compared to here in Ireland.

But anecdotal is nothing to base an argument on.

It´s troublesome when random journalism/surveys/poll´s get´s passed for fact.

That said, stupidity is universal. Just ask my inbreed nabo.

You might want to fix your title there.

Since you clearly meant "can't", the answer is no. Basic education should at least cover this much.
"Should" and "Does" are two different things, though.

The problem with a statement like this is it's relatively believable. The general populace is terrible with geography, among other subjects. Can't find America? It's a bit of a stretch, but not much. We have a lousy primary education system. The numbers may be fudged, but they're still technically conceivable, even if not true.

It still had me rocking back and forth with tears rolling down my eyes. Absolutely hilarious! I seriously cannot understand how someone can be that unintelligent or just plain ignorant!

I had a teacher in 5th grade who had us memorize all of the 50 states and their capitals in the US.

And I was able to name most countries in the world when I was 13...
Though that was mostly because of me playing Hearts of Iron.
Huh, what do you know? A computer game that taught me something.

And I have met Americans who are under the impression that most of Europe lives in villages without any technology after 1900...

The thing is that they actually DID find that many retarded people.
That is an embarrassment in of itself.
