Is it wrong that I don't want to drive?

I'm 20 years old and, to say the least, I've put a small amount of effort into getting my drivers license. The reason being that I've just never really wanted to. There are several reasons I've never seen the appeal of driving as well as reasons I've never needed to.

I have two train stations within about a 10 minute walk from me as well as three different bus stops in my neighbourhood that go to different areas of the city so I've never had trouble with travel. I don't feel I have the patience to sit in traffic powerlessly and I enjoy a bit of walking anyway. There's a certain Yahtzee quote that I remember hearing in his Split/Second: Velocity review that sums this up a little: "I doubt I would find it easier to get around if I were 6 feet wide and constantly farting carbon monoxide (I don't know how your mother does it)". I don't see the necessity of it.

I'm certainly not looking forward to affording the gas prices that everyone groans about. I've also observed how pretty much everyone I've been in a car with who is driving inevitably succumbs to road rage, even amongst the the kindest, most reasonable and empathetic people I know. I have a cinema, shopping center and other necessities within walking distance or easily accessible through public transport, and if I go anywhere else like, say, a friends house or a party, I end up either drunk or high anyway so driving is an obvious no-no there. I also live in Australia, a nation with a very high drinking population which tends to go hand-in-hand with driving related injuries, and I am VERY opposed to people who drink drive, its the only trait of certain people I've witnessed that has the power to completely change the way I feel about them. To me, its the dumbest thing one can do and endangers many lives.

On top of that, I've also been told that Australia has a high incidence of vehicle accidents involving young drivers. This is the part that actually scares me: The fact that I could potentially be involved in an injury, or even an accident that only damages my car, because of another driver's recklessness.

Speaking of fear, I only have fear of other drivers rather than my own ability (or lack of). I should state that I have driven under supervision for a total of about 5 hours worth. Its not as difficult or scary once I'm actually behind the wheel and moving, so I have nothing against driving in of itself. But I'm in this weird state where it seems the older I get and the more things I hear and learn, the LESS interested I am in driving, which seems to be the opposite of just about everybody I know.

The reason I've made this thread and the reason this... indifference to getting my license has resurfaced in me is because this morning, my mother came home only an hour after she left for work. She informed me that my sister's boyfriend's dad, as well as a family friend of ours, was just killed on his motorcycle on his way to work. Apparently, he was going down a street on his motorcycle (just a minute away from his house, mind you) when a person in a car pulled out of a driveway without looking. He had no chance of stopping his bike in time to avoid collision and, at present, I'm don't know if the death was instant but he was dead before he could get to the hospital. So if my post comes off as unfair towards driving or unstructured or whatever, its because as of just a few hours ago a father I know is gone. And to think just last night my parents were urging me once again to get my license.

But anyway, I would like to your thoughts, Escapists. Do I really NEED to become a driver? Am I being unfair? If so, what would you suggest I do? And do/have any of you also been reluctant towards learning how drive?

Not at all, especially if you have other means of transportation. I have a license and drive frequently, but I really don't enjoy it. I'm always grumpy because nobody in my state knows how to drive, and I'm paranoid so I'm always expecting to collide with someone at any moment.

If you don't need to drive, and you're happy getting around with public transportation and other alternatives, I see no reason to get a license. My sister's husband lives in, and grew up in, NYC and he's needed a driver's license.

Pretty essential for me, I'm out in the middle of nowhere. No busses, pretty much 0 trains in the state (passenger trains anyways). Oh and 15 miles to the nearest store. Haha.

Well, eventually you'll need to go to some event that's really out of the way in terms of public transportation, and no one will be available to drive you there, and you'll say to yourself, "goddamn, why didn't I learn how to drive?" It doesn't happen often, but enough that I got off my lazy ass and finally got a license at 19 :p

I'm 19 and my attitude to driving is that I could take it or leave it. I suppose being able to drive would be nice, but in my current situation I am a student and therefore skint. Meaning I would be unable to afford a car and all honesty wouldn't have too much use for one when I can reach anywhere I want to via train, bus, taxi, lifts etc. I reckon I'll drive eventually but I'm truly pretty indifferent as it stands for the time being.

If you have the ability and the patience to get around otherwise, I don't see why not. I have to drive, considering my work is in an entirely different town, but if I didn't need to, I wouldn't Driving, in all honesty, is a horrible experience. People speed, cut you off, tailgate you consistently and, in general, have no idea how to operate a vehicle. I mean, hell, half the people on the road can't even figure out how to properly use a turn signal (before the action, not during or in the process of, folks!)...how can we trust them to operate the rest of the car?

Sorry...back on topic. If you don't need to drive, I so reason why you should force yourself.

Is it wrong? Absolutely not. Is it a sign of a different generation? absolute.

I do not think you should be forced to drive, no, But I think it is in your best interest to learn how to do so because just because your living in a situation at 20 years old where you have alternative means of transit, does not mean youll always be allowed to live there and may end up having to move to a different location where those transit means are not quite as accessible as they used to be.

Learn how, for when you DO need it.

It's not wrong to be opposed to driving. Heck I don't like driving. As long as you have alternative means to transportation I don't mind. What I do mind are people like one of my friends who refuses to get a driver's license and then proceeds to ask myself or one of my other friends to always pick him up... FROM THE OTHER END OF THE CITY (we're talking an hour drive here one-way).

I'm 19 and I don't have my drivers license either. I need to get it because it's just not feasible where I live to have anything else, but I'm not too stoked. When my parents taught me to drive they pretty much scared me with it so I'm always really reluctant about it.

I say screw the license if you don't want it! Use the trains, or invest in a good bike and use that!

It's not wrong at all. If you don't want to drive, then don't drive. I personally hate driving but it's a necessary evil for me.

It's embarrassing how long I went without bothering to get my license.
And once I did get it...it wasn't so bad until gas prices shot back up into the sky. Oh, then my friends and family started making me play Taxi Driver for them.

Do get it just to get it out of the way, but don't worry about the obligations, especially if you have other viable/affordable transportation options available.

I really don't care for driving. I could've (and probably should've) started the gruelling journey towards my full driver's license over a year ago, but I really just haven't been motivated. It's something useful to have, and preferably sooner than later so I'll have my full license when I might be able to do useful things with it (like buy drinks!) But I don't see much of a need for it.

I live in the city, about 6 k from most of my friends, and I have a downtown's worth of shopping, restaurants, and other stuff only a few km away, easily accessible by subway. Anywhere else, I can bike quite reliably. I really don't understand why SO MANY people drive, and why so many more say they'd rather continue driving than get amenities like subways, bike lanes, or better bus/rail service. It seriously boggles my mind. And I hope to never have to drive either. I'm happy with public transit and my bicycle, and I know that I'll be healthier and more environmentally friendly for it too. And also a liittle richer.

No. You should want to drive precisely as much as you need it to serve your life/interests. Since it sounds like you can easily do without, why fuss with it? Cars are expensive. Insurance is expensive. Gas is expensive. Nothing wrong with your feet/bike/public transportation.

You *may* find possession of the skill somewhat useful at odd intervals, however, so it won't hurt you to learn a bit even if you don't plan on driving much. And you'll probably enjoy it more if you just see it as fun practice instead of something you have to do because you have to do it.

There's no need to drive regularly, it's good that you have all this transport available and don't need to drive. However, it'd be a good idea to get your license and drive a little bit every so often to keep in practise. This is so you can drive if it ever becomes necessary due to an emergency of some kind. It's a good skill to have even if you hardly ever use it.

Hey, you've got convenient public transportation and a bunch of stores/restaurants/etc. within walking distance, so don't sweat about not driving! Walking is good for you, and if you're really in a hurry, it sounds like a bike would be more cost efficient. (Plus, all that walking will make your legs nice and strong for easy pedaling!) As for the dangers of cars, yeah, that's a pretty valid concern, especially since people you know have been killed in car related accidents. I really hate dumb drivers (seriously, who the fuck doesn't look when they back out of driveways or parking? Your rear-view mirrors are for safety, not putting on makeup!), so knowing you'll be out and away from them is a relief.

I drive for a living, so as far as I'm concerned driving is essential. However, I know a lot of people, all of whom live in cities, who don't drive and don't plan to. If you have access to public transit, more power to you. Here, however, the only public transit available to me is a taxi, so for the cost of taking a taxi everywhere I may as well have my own vehicle, not even counting, as I said, the fact that my car is my livelihood.
