Is 'Needlemouse' Sonic 4?

Sega has allegedly registered the domain name www.sonicthehedgehog4.com, could this mean that Project Needlemouse will be a return to the series of old?

Internet detectives have dug up details that Brandon Laurino, Sega's Community and Online Director, has registered the domain sonicthehedgehog4.com [http://www.sonicthehedgehog4.com/], which points you to the Sega [http://www.sega.com/] homepage when visited, suggesting that the new Sonic game will a continuation of the classic Genesis Sonic games, rather than of the more recent 3D iterations.

It's something of a running joke that any new Sonic the Hedgehog game will be dreadful, and while longtime fans will disagree with exactly where the series lost its way, the consensus is that it was definitely better when it was 2D. With Project Needlemouse [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97508-Sonic-Goes-Solo-Once-More-in-Project-Needlemouse] being confirmed as a Sonic-only zone, and definitely not anything to do with Pikachu in a sombrero [http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/1764/pika.jpg], hopes are again high that this will be the game that redeems the series.

While this and the comments from Sega itself, do foster hope that Needlemouse will be drawing its cues from the classic Sonic game; it could be just a case of Sega registering the name so that no one else could and Needlemouse might end up being called something completely different. 'Sonic Unpacked' maybe, or perhaps 'Sonic the Haha, Fooled You, Amy's the Main Character and Shadow is Helping' ?

Ok, probably not either of those.

interesting....

I hope it doesn't turn out to be a Mega Man 9-esque 8-bit Sonic the Headgehog though... if they're gona bring him back, then they should do it with a full game, not some kind of download only thing.

I hope they make it count. But then again people would complain about it being 2D and therefor crappy.

I really hope so. Hopefully Sonic Team hasn't forgotten how to make a good 2D Sonic game.
I've lost all hope in Sonic Team. Dimps is where it's at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimps#Wii

Notice how they did only the Daytime stages for the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed, and the clunkiness that were the Nighttime levels were handled by Sonic "Team".

Notice that the PS3 version(developed fully by Sonic "Team" gets a 4.5, and the Wii version(half Dimps, half Sonic team)gets a 7.2.

Not only is Dimps good at making 3D Sonic levels, they also made the surprisingly excellent Sonic Rush games for the DS.

Do you see what I'm getting at?

The Sonic Team of yore isn't really with us anymore, long since scattered to the four winds. Sonic Team today doesn't really mean anything. That said, Sonic just needs a sense of urgency, and less time to explore more world. Gives us a map that takes 5 minutes to run through in a straight line, 20 minutes to explore top to bottom, with a bunch of different routes. Then give us a 6 minute time limit and some interesting enemy designs. Boom. Perfect Sonic, in the classic style.

as much as i'd hate to wait any longer for this than i have to, Sonic 4 would be a fantastic way to celebrate the game's 20th anniversary. which would be next year.

WHAT? Who would dare complain that a 2D sonic game is crappy? Clearly people who weren't around when Sega Genesis was king and Sonic was my hero (I was seven).

Whatever's the case, if this bombs, I doubt there will be any more Sonic games.
Probably true, and it would be a fitting end. If they manage to fuck up a 2D sonic game then we know Sonic team just isn't trying any longer.

I don't know if you've seen the recent Sonic "full games not download only things" but they've all been reheated steamers. A Mega Man 9-esque 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog could possibly be the best thing they could do for the franchise. BUT I'm hoping for the same game play and art design as the original but in HD format.

New Super Sonic Brothers only.

2.5D Sonic "back to the roots" game akin to New SMB.
Oh yes... NSMB Wii has outsold Mario Galaxy in 3 months (compared to the 2 year headstart of Mario Galaxy).

SEGA wants in on that gravy train and they may have finally figured out how to do it.

If SEGA was smart, not only would that company make a true 2D sequel similar to Sonic 3, it would also be rendered with sprites. Now, The New Super Mario Bros. was a pretty damn good game. IMHO, that game didn't have the same "magic" since it was rendered with polygons. I've been gaming since I was 9 years old, and I just love sprites. Polygons are great for 2.5D or 3D games, but they just seem redundant for true 2D games.

Just imagine a 128-bit sprite-rendered Sonic game. Just imagine the detail, the scaling, the level production. Oh I'm getting excited just thinking about it.

Then again, it is SEGA. That company has fallen so far from grace they would have to buy mountain climbing gear just to get back to where they were in the 1990s.
