So, some context is required. I already have Elder Scrolls IV on my 360 and it's a great game, but the leveling system and lack of any massive customization bothers me. I've just discovered that my laptop can run this game and I'm thinking of getting it again from Steam. I put this to you, fellow escapists.

1: How easy are mods to install? I'm not really that tech savvy.
2: Is it really worth it this long after release?
3: Which mods would you recommend? (Please explain what they offer).
EDIT: I have Fallout 3.

If you can understand the instructions that come with a 10 dollar lego set, then you won't have a problem modding.

Its that simple.

EDIT: In fact, to expound, there are 4 kinds of mods you will find.

1: The mod file that doesn't tell you how to install it. For various reasons, you shouldn't install it, it'll probably crash your game.

2: The mod file that does have some text file giving instructions. For various reasons, they're simple and almost always work if you follow the instructions.

3: The really complicated mod file that doesn't have an auto install program. you shouldn't install it, because you don't know what you're doing.

4: The really complicated mod file that does have an auto install program. Just a couple easy clicks and you've pimped out your game.

You should be fine.

My recommended mod to install for Oblivion is called Fallout 3. It makes the levelling system more comprehensive, the story is more fun, you don't want to kill every person who tries to talk to you (only half of them), and it improves the projectile weapons by quite a lot.

Joking aside: Get Fallout 3 instead.

If you want a good RPG there are better choices than Oblivion, Fallout 3 was good and the next Fallout is coming out soon, and there are a lot of other RPG's out there to try, Oblivion isn't bad but it starts to gring after awhile.

Yes! Oh god yes! The game is great and the mods are incredibly easy to install. As for which I recommend, visit tesnexus.com and check out their top files and files of the month.

I can pretty much guarantee that you will find whatever mod you like. Overhauls, anime stuff, weapons, houses etc etc etc.

If you like oblivion then I suggest you get fallout 3. It's like oblivion, but with guns (yes I said it!) and it's set in the future.

Oblivion is a damn good game, especially with mods, but I like FO3 better.

Edit: But I just remembered New Vegas is coming soon, so wait for that.

1. simple, its just drag and drop in the C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\data folder (default game install directory) and sometimes you would need to overwrite things, depending on the mod
you can activate the mods by going on the the launcher and ticking the boxes or use the mod mangers and tick them
2. the next elder of the scrolls isnt till another year or more, FO4 isn't till october, this should keep you occupied until then

3.this website really, ^.^ all the mods you will ever need
http://www.tesnexus.com/index.php

Unofficial Oblivion Patch and other related to the DLCs which can be found on the page
Natural Environments (if you have got the hardware)

1): Most can be installed by copying game files to a directory and enabling them. This is usually explained in the Readme for the mods. There´s also a free mod manager available for the game.

2): Yes. After I´d put 80 hours into the game, and things were growing stale, I got another 40 fresh hours out of it by using mods, and I doubt I´ve tried 0,1 % of them. There are a ton of mods out there (Planet Elder Scrolls site, for instance, check out their hall of fame), presumably enough to customize the game entirely to your liking.

3): The best I´ve found are:

BTmod: Massive interface overhaul, far more manageable.
Akatosh Mount: Fly and ride dragon mounts.
Natural Environments: Improved game world graphics.
Lost Paladins of the Divines: New Quest line with new items.
The Lost Spires: New Quest line with entirely new guild, dungeon types and items.

As far as I'm aware, you can't use Oblivon Script Extender mods with the Steam version, just keep that in mind.

But anyways, as long as Oblivion's modding community is going strong (which it is), it'll always be worth the purchase.

And for which mods I'd personally recommend?

Here's are my personal recommendations (They can all be found at the Elder Scrolls Nexus):

- Oblivion Mod Manager, MANDATORY IF YOU WANT TO AVOID A STROKE ATTEMPTING TO MANAGE YOUR MODS.

- DarNified UI, if you want a half-decent user-interface.

- Alternative Start Arrive by Ship, get this if you want to completely skip over the entire opening prison sequence.

- Oscuros Oblivion Overhaul, makes the game more challenging overall.

- Unique Landscapes Compilation OMOD, makes the areas around Cyrodill more varied and interesting, worth it if you like pretty enviroments.

- Female EyeCandy Body Replacer Underwear, gives females actual human-looking bodies, as opposed to the gorilla-esque ...Things they are in Vanilla Oblivion, I'd recommend a male body replacer too, but I haven't found one that wasn't completely naked yet.

Be sure to check out the Top 100 while you're there too, have fun 'bra!

1. real easy
2. Mhmmm Yes and no..
2. None, mods destroy the game, I suggest playing a few months and then trying out some mods.

I don't have any mods for it, mostly because I don't know any good ones to get, But I got the game about 6 months ago and still love it, there is just way to much to do in that game.

It's worth It just to see the battle at the end of the Main Story Quest, I won't go into further detail as it will spoil the story and the suprise but it's freaking sweeeeeet.

from OBSE site:
http://obse.silverlock.org/

OBSE provides official support for:
Oblivion & Shivering Isles build 1.2.0.416. This is the latest official build of Oblivion. It provides fixes for the FormID problems and supports Shivering Isles. All users will need to update to this build in order to use OBSE v0017 and later.
Steam build 1.2.0.416 (in v0017b)

However, you shouldn't get the game at all in my opinion, as the story, characters, action, and 95% of the environments are the very definition of bland and uninspired. However, mods do make at least the leveling system not complete crap, and adds some actually interesting spells, so there's some redeeming value to the pc version.

Hope this helps :p
