I strongly disagree.

You CAN break the game with mods, especially uber power mods and the like, but there are many mods developed to address the leveling inequities, for instance.

Sure, get it. I'm sure you could find it preowned for £10ish.

And from what I've heard, if you don't like the leveling, you want "Oscuras oblivion overhaul".

I agree with Novskij, Oblivion was just not a good game when compared to earlier games like Morrowind or Daggerfall. Morrowind offers a bigger, yet still lovingly handcrafted world, with more to do and more options built in. Everything from being a werewolf (with an expansion), to the option to levitate, make your own spells (I don't think Oblivion had that feature...), and use weaponry such a spears.

Either way though, if you have to get a Bethesda game, be it Oblivion, Morrowind, or Fallout 3, make sure to grab the PC versions, for the mods. Mods make sandbox games like these so much better.

Worth what? Worth buying, or worth however much they charge for it?

From what I understand, the steam version comes with some of the better mods available for the game, and I still enjoy it, even without mods.
I guess I'd have to say go for it.

If you already have it on the 360, and you're not tech-savvy, then either get tech-savvy or leave it be.

It's honestly not worth your cash just for the mods. It is if you're a budding game designer, but I've got it on PC and PS3 and frankly it wasn't worth the two copies, even though I could try some mods on my PC version and all that. Even Midas Magic, which is supposed to be a brilliant, well-flavoured mod that adds lots of unique spells and a few characters, is actually pretty dull in my experience.

At the end of the day, the mods for Elder Scrolls just haven't impressed me to anywhere near the same degree the HL2 mods have. The best things about that game, for me, were all already in the game as it stood. So it's a no, don't bother, overall from me.

For me, at least, the Mod Manager actually caused as many problems as it solved. I think it needs a more user-friendly interface, but maybe that's just me.

You could always use the developer console to toggle god mode, then the uber power mods are obsolete.

Yes, yes, yes! Oblivion is an amazing game, and playing it with mods just makes it even better! It's all really easy to install and with how cheap it is now, there really is no risk in getting it. I've played well over 500 hours on it, at least, and I still have loads of fun with it.

Oblivion is one of the most unintentionally hilarious games I've ever played. Between the bugs you never get sick of watching (dead bodies in a door flailing like windsocks, bodies that turn into string cheese, river corpses that float like ballooons, the ping-pong room) & combining cheats with exploits (for example, arrows that shoot meat the ability to make it rain watermelons, then watch NPCs on horseback attempt to ride uphill against an avalanche of said watermelons).

I played Oblivion for about 30 hours, I think, but when I got Fallout 3, I uninstalled it and don't know if I'll ever play it again. It's all a matter of opinion, of course, but I've been spoiled by the first two Gothics (and by Risen for the last few days) and now I just can't get into Oblivion. So, if you've already played Fallout 3, I would suggest you get Risen or Gothic 2 instead for your fantasy-RPG needs.

But that is only my opinion, as I said.

Overall, Oblivion is worth it. Despite all my complaints with it, if I started playing it again I would probably be useless for all my waking hours until I was once again able to pry myself away from it. And the weirdest part is I couldn't easily explain why.

It is a game that does almost everything (though some of the everything requires the installation of mods), and while there are games that do parts of it better, only Oblivion puts them all together.

What I've discovered, however, is that it is much more fun if you cheat. At least to a point. It is a fairly widespread belief that the leveling system in Oblivion sucks. Everything is leveled up along with you, but unless you play it just right it levels up faster than you do, so it oddly becomes harder the higher you go, and if you play it without worrying about the "optimal" way to level up it will eventually become almost impossible as the monsters just get too tough. This creates the weird feeling that your character is not really changing. Your numbers are going up, but the rewards for upping them are so few and far between that it doesn't really feel worth it. But the world is really fun and beautiful and the quests are a good time. The core story is decent enough, though I think the pacing could be improved (the second quest for it sends you through the gates of Hell, literally--that should have been built up a bit more, I think!). Overall, it is a fun game to play with the character you want to play in it. But getting that character can be a pain in the butt, and it requires you to break immersion almost continually.

Here is what I recommend: find some mods that look interesting and install them. Then figure out who you want your character to be. A master swordsman? A big strong bare knuckle boxer? A gardener mage? Figure out a reason for you to be in jail. Then go through the intro section and as soon as you escape from the sewers cheat your way up to whatever skill and ability levels you want, and up to a challenging level, and just have fun playing in the world. When picking a class, pick skills that you will never use to keep yourself from leveling up farther than you want. It sounds ludicrious, but the game is really fun if you get rid of the character-building element (which is overused in games anyway) and just create the character you want to play.

The character I made: his backstory is that he was a prodigy with the sword. He was a master at a very young age, and as he grew up he attracted the attention of the Blades, the Emperor's secret service-like personal guard. He served in their ranks for some time as a secret agent, but eventually decided that, despite his skill, violence was not for him, and retired to become a humble monk. He did this for a while, but eventually the Blades came to him and tried to get him to rejoin them. He refused. So they threw him in jail. Then the game starts, and I just go from there. He was an excellent swordsman, but he tried to get around by stealth and acrobatics and avoid killing as much as he could. He wore monk's robes and sandals, and in general acted kind of like Obi-wan Kenobi.

Oblivion is the best 20 bucks I ever spent. It's fun on the 360, but all the glaring flaws that most people point out aren't as obvious after downloading some clever mods. There are still flaws, and it's somewhat buggy, but the game itself makes up for it.

Well, i think its worth it. If you liked it on console you should like it better this way.
Also, download the TES Construction Set. You wont regret it.

Morrowind is a brilliant game, but its inferior in a great many ways. (Kinda like comparing Fallout 3 to Fallout 1 and 2.)
Now a remake of Morrowind on the new engine would be brilliant, but until then...

Oblivion's in my Hall of Fame for a reason, and the best mods come with installers---their designers wrote an .exe that does all the work for you. Learn Wrye Bash and you're even better off.

1: How easy are mods to install? I'm not really that tech savvy.

Very easy. Plus, most mods come with a readme that gives simple instructions on where to put what. Usually all you have to do is drag 'n' drop.[/b]

2: Is it really worth it this long after release?

Hm... how do I put this... [HEADING=1]YES![/HEADING]

3: Which mods would you recommend? (Please explain what they offer).

Oblivion Mod Manager [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2097] - needed if you want to do anything with mods.

Better Oblivion Sorting Software [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20516] - Basically sorts your mods for you. If you don't have much mods you probably won't need it. But if your like me and have 200+ mods, its a godsend.

Oblivion Script Extender [http://obse.silverlock.org/] - pretty much all of the best mods use it.

BT Mod [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1825] - Changes the inventory and makes it much better and easy to use for the PC. Basically its what it should have been.

Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15256] - Completely overhauls the game and makes it amazing. It adds and fixes so much I can't explain everything here

The Unofficial Oblivion Patch [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5296] fixes literally thousands of bugs. And if you get any of the DLC's and Shivering Isles, I recommend the Official DLC patch [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9969] and the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10739]. They do the same as the Unofficial patch, but instead with the DLC and Shivering Isles.

Midas Magic [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9562] - Makes magic so much better and adds so much new and fun spells. Watermelon Atronarchs FTW!

Deadly Reflex [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8273] - As shown above, makes combat much more violent and fun. Requires the Oblivion Script Extender.

HGEC female body replacer - replaces the female bodies to make them look, well female. Its a nude body replacer, but has an underwear version in the downloads section. I'd post a link, but there is nudity involved, and I don't feel like linking to that here. Just do a search on TESNexus for HG EyeCandy. There are also armor replacers in the downloads section to have the game's armor match the bodies.

Akatosh Mount [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10819] - Basically, it adds a ridable dragon to the game. A ridable, fucking dragon. I don't think I need to explain how awesome that is.

Lost Paladin of the Nine Divines [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10505] - Not particularly special, but I helped beta test it, so yeah :p

Unique Landscapes Compilation [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19370] - Changes the default Oblivion forests and scenery into truly diverse areas. Its really amazing and adds so much life into the game. The mod is an OMOD file, which means all you have to do is double click it, let it unpack, activate it in the Oblivion Mod Manager, and play! The alternative is installing each one separately, which is nice if you want to pick and choose, but if you want them all, go with this.

Elven Map Redux [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3002] - Completely changes the map and makes it look much, much better.

Reneers Guard Overhaul [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5977] - Makes the guards a lot better. Stops them from "sensing" crimes. And it makes the game better.

Better Amulets [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4126] and Ring [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4107] Replacers - It makes the rings and amulets look less like shoe leather and more like pieces of jewelry.

The extra mp3 music packs: Part 1 [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4186], Part 2 [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8033], Part 4 [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4192], Part 5 [http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4189] - Yes, part 3 is missing, I can't find it. It may have been a type on the unloader's part, but I digress. This pack adds so much amazing new music to the game, and blends perfectly with the game. I use it and its amazing. Really helps immersion.

There are also optimization and texture replacement mods that help boost your performance, I suggest searching on TESNexus for "Optimization" without the quotes in case your game is sluggish. Which it most likely will be, since the system recommendations for the game are totally wrong.

And if you have any questions, or want any more recommendations, feel free to ask, either through here or PM. Really, I don't mind. And I sometimes find some cool stuff for myself as well :D

I didn't play much after getting it on PC...then again, I sunk nearly 4,000 hours in on consoles.

I don't think mods can change the game enough to make me care.

And people keep suggesting leveling mods.

FUCK YOU! I adore Oblivion's leveling system.
