is "playing with freinds in the same room" completley dead?

No it just depends on your friends I think. Over the summer I used to always invite my buddy over to my house for some split screen gun game and Dead nation, and at least once a month (sometime every week if their is down time) I usually go to another friends house and we play League of Legends and DoTA and sometimes other games on the ps3, wii, gamecube and N64.

It seems like the closest you're going to get to that is through LAN parties. Since the PS3 and X360 have profile and achievement systems, it's hard to find people willing to play 'guest' and miss out on achievements for those few games that do still offer split-screen or, same-console multiplayer like Guitar Hero.

This is part of the reason I've taken to hunting for older games and consoles. Sure, my GF and I both have TVs and 360s but it's so much easier to pop in Super Mario Kart or, Mario Party.

This reminds me, I need to find Donkey Konga o.o!
Two words: Recover GamerTag.

you still get the achievements etc and can take them home with you afterwards.

Either that or put your Gamertag onto your USB or Phone or whatever and transfer it on to your friend's Xbox.

I know a guy who use to put his Gamertag onto a USB every time he left home because he was playing on other people's systems more than his own due to how little time he spent at home.

I share an XBox with my twin so a lot of games in my collection are splitscreen. There's a surprising amount if you can be bothered to find them. And many developers are adding them in sequels, Toy Soldiers: Cold War for example, so there's still demand for it. Sadly, being able to play splitscreen online is rare. Although Gears 3 does it and Borderlands 2 is doing it as well.

Also, when I go round to my friends house, we spend most of the time playing splitscreen or local. Halo 3 or Reach is always brilliant but I was surprised to find that the new Mortal Kombat supports 4 players offline, and it's fun!

I also don't like playing online multiplayer by myself, I now find I have to play splitscreen (On Gears 3, Halo, and even Black Ops). People complain about smaller screens but i've always shared a screen so it makes no difference to me. I don't actually think that i'd of bought a lot of my games if they weren't splitscreen, certainly not Black Ops. But it's amazing how much diffent and more enjoyable it is when the person laying down cover fire is sat next to you.

So, yeah. Playing in the same room definately stil exists, Online is good but it's nothing compared with playing offline, if you can find the games.

I don't know about "freinds" but I'm sure same room "Friends" playing isn't dead yet.

Nintendo is still doing it - if by force - but its working.

Portal 2 becomes a lot more fun if you can see your co-op partner's face when you're being a dick. And punch him if he's being one. Headsets just don't make for the subtle joys of being a dick towards each other.

Also, considering wii online is kinda shit, you can always play party games like mario party, super smash brothers, mario kart, guitar hero, and warioware when friends are over.

Not to mention the benefit of starting drinking games when people are in the same room :p

We still split screen the consoles quite often. Gaming nights are fairly common with me and my friends. Sometimes we even do a "command bunker weekend" where we all move our PCs to one persons room and hang out there for a few days. It's a bit of effort to organise and set up, but it's really fun.

This is one thing I do enjoy about the Wii. It may have killed single player and online but it kicks ass at local multiplayer. Brawl all the way.

Me and my flatmates play HoN together all the time, in the same room. So no, it's not completely dead.

I'd say it was dying. Because if you have 4 person split screen. Then that's 3 people who are playing the game that have not bought the game. Thus loosing out on 3 customers. Greedy assholes can't afford to miss that.

Well in the past 2 Weeks me and my mate have just completed Gears 3, Resistance 3, Halo ODST and Portal 2 in splitscreen...with multiple playthroughs.

And now I'm bac at uni we've been playing Black ops Splitscreen battles every day.

So I personally don't see a decline in spitscreen

They're trying to do away with it, but a few developers still understand that it's fun to play with up to four people in the same room.
I hardly ever play anything online, save for Quake Live, TF2 or Minecraft (but Minecraft is always with my friends), when I play multiplayer, it's usually splitscreen.

There are less and less Split-Screen games coming out, and I wish that wasn't true. My best friend has a PS3 and I have an Xbox and gaming PC. So the only way we can play together is in the same room. Having less and less games support this is disappointing to say the least.
This is why I loved the old Xbox games like Timesplitters, still enjoyed Resident Evil 5, and am really looking forward to Serious Sam on PC.

Epic Games have gone out of their way to add 4 person Co-op to Gears Of War 3 so I'd say it's alive for some and is for me myself... and I look forward to playing Mass Effect 3 with friends!
I could be wrong, as I haven't played it, but isn't the GoW 3 co-op online only?
Its got splitscreen. One of the reasons i consider it a brilliant buy, if only to support dev's who make split screen games.

Cod:BO actually improved on the usual old formula of split screen, by letting you play split screen online.
I haven't seen that done before (it probably has) but it's a really nice feature.
You get to play split screen, but you're not limited to playing 1v1, which is often less fun in FPS games IMO.

Doesn't a lot of games include co-op split screen, or local multiplayer in some way as well?
I haven't really noticed a lack of this, but then again, most of my multiplayer games are on the PC, where split screen haven't ever been around a lot.
