is "playing with freinds in the same room" completley dead?

and I look forward to playing Mass Effect 3 with friends![/quote] Me too. I hope it's split screen rather than just online.

I find it pretty funny, multiplayer is creeping into more and more games and yet the gaming expereince has become more "solitary"...in a manner of speaking

because to be honest, aside from fighting games like mortal combat or racing games (I think) and such I really cant think of many games that allow you to play multiplayer with somone else in the same room, with another controller...it seems the only use for a second controller is charging rotation :/

its also funny that "split screen"....you know that thing we did on the N64 with golden eye...is pretty much non-existant...and yet our TV's are generally bigger than ever

OR am I wrong? my first question is are there any relitivley recent games that make use of "in the same room" multiplayer?

AND...well why? is it purley greed? (an extra console/game per person) or is there somone other cost/technicla reason?

(yeah I know this is one main point of the wii...but...well Im not a fan of the wii)
People like yourself not buying the Wii and its good games are the reason you don't see as many of those games on there that you'd like.

Often the Wii seems like the last bastion for living room multiplayer. People groan for the lack of online MP in NSMB Wii but Nintendo knows better than anyone how amazingly LAME online MP would be in a game like that. There's a lot to love on the Wii, from a massive variety of genres, varying single- and multiplayer focus, and both mature and "family-friendly" titles. Lots of hardcore and easy games, too. Some of the most difficult gaming challenges I've faced this gen were on the Wii, between games like Cave Story, Monster Hunter, Bit.Trip and Sin and Punishment.

It's hard to understand why you would complain about lack of in-person multiplayer when you're passing up the console with the best games under that label (that aren't shooters). Not everyone is going to want to twist around a Wii remote and play Mario Kart with you all the time, but games like NSMB Wii, Boom Blox and Blast Works are fairly unique games that I've been hard-pressed to find people who WON'T love them.

At its current price I can't think of a reason why you shouldn't own a Wii. And if you do own one and your library of games on it isn't 15+, there's a massive selection out there that you WILL like but just haven't given a try yet.

OT: I could get into the discussion of online MP in PS360 but it's fairly straightforward. Some games do local MP, but the systems are too weak to keep up decent graphics and do split-screen. Thus, 2-player maximum or no local MP at all. Also, it's highly beneficial to console AND game sales numbers if you require EVERY player to have their own system and game and play online. So if a person wants to play his friend in Halo: Reach, he needs to buy a 360, the game, and an XBL Gold subscription. Some $350-400 down the drain, right into Microsoft's/Bungie's wallets. (Obviously the major flaw in this case is that you CAN play local and even online at the same time in Reach, up to 4 people at once. I can't think of a game off the top of my head that doesn't do local but DOES online, mostly because I don't play a lot of those games and the ones I do play, I play on PC. So there's that.)

I hope not. Just yesterday, a friend and I played through half of the Resistance 3 co-op campaign.

All three games in the Resistance trilogy allow for splitscreen coop
Portal 2
Borderlands

That's all I can think of.
Really?

Ok, here we go *clears throat*

Gears of War 1, 2 and 3
Lego. Every Lego move game.
Resident Evil 5
Halo 3, ODST and Reach
Guitar Hero/Rock Band
Little Big Planet 1 and 2
Fable 2 and 3
Dead Rising 2
Rage
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2

...and that's just boxed games off the top of my head. If you go into downloadable there's a ton of stuff. I mean, come on:

Lara Croft & the Guardian of Light
and every other dual stick shooter ever, including
Geometry Wars 1 and 2
Super Stardust HD
Gatling Gears
Zombie Nation
Renegade Ops
and more...
The Dishwasher 2
Jamestown
Trine
World of Keflings
Rock of Ages
Greed Corp
Splosion Man and Ms Splosion Man
Raskulls

and that's not even counting re-releases, remakes and other stuff that has offline coop. Or party games, motion-controlled games and minigame collections, sports games, racing games, fighting games and more. Oh, and it's just this gen, too.

It seems to me that you guys are forgetting that when things go out of your field of view or attention span they don't stop existing. There's a TON of stuff to play while sitting in the same room, some of it actually awesome.
Dead Rising 2 has splitscreen? AWESOME!

Also, many of those games you mentioned are Xbox exclusives.

I am like to play Co-Op in the same room and when it comes to Competitive, certain games are better than others. Star Wars Battlefront 2 still has its place for when my friends come over.

It's still a big thing on the Wii, whether you like it or not . Why would you write off an entire console, especially when it still has many games with a feature that you fear is dying?
This = exactly what I was trying to say two posts above you, expressed much more simply. THANK YOU.

I don't know, what is a 'freind'?

OT: Less games support splitscreen or coop these days, that is true. It's quite annoying when I want to play a game with a friend and I'm restricted to just Fifa.

It doesn't seem all that common in games these days... but part of that is because in the past it was split-screen multiplayer or nothing at all. Still, online multiplayer, even with people you know, doesn't quite feel the same to me.

I played through Trine with two keyboards and mice on the same computer a couple of weeks ago with a friend... so much better than online multiplayer.

Maybe its indie games that will force its grand comeback.

I wish it weren't because I really miss it. Unfortunately I don't own any consoles anymore since there aren't any titles worth it to me. I was thinking about buying another N64 and trying to restock some of my games.
Of course, its a huge ***** for me to get all my friends in one place with our conflicting schedules as it is. I am lucky if I can get them here for football on sundays, let alone some kinda gaming session.

That's a really good point, and I hadn't really thought of that. It's kind of sad, really, but many of my games aren't multi-player anyways, so I can't say how many are split-screen. The only one that really comes to mind is Resident Evil 5, and that's not all that current now anyways.

I find the Wii perfect for this situation. Every Thursday afternoon all my friends come over and we spend alot of time playing the Wii (Along with other things) With games like Donkey Kong, Mario Party 8, Mario Kart, New super mario brothers, mario, mario, mario etc (and sometimes wii sports and wii play; the tanks minigame is epic fun)

I honestly don't think local multiplayer will ever die simply because you can't do things like streak into the living room to distract the other team, fart at the person who keeps sniping you, or physically assualt the streakers when they run into the living room hoping to distract you while you are playing online, and these are the kind of things that make local multiplayer worth it, at least for me.

Of course, just yesterday I played Reach split screen, worked fine, two controllers, two people, one room.
So it still happens.

Yeah, it has coop but not split screen, I slipped on that one :)
No biggie, just clearing that up.
