Is Shenmue Coming to XBLA?

Actually it was the Sega Saturn that killed the Dreamcast. And wasn't Project Berkley the code name for the Dreamcast when it was in development?

While it would be great if Shenmue came to XBLA, it's a series without an end. It would be like knowing Halo 2 is the end of the Halo franchise.

From memory one of the cool things about Shenmue is that if you had your Dreamcast hooked up to the net while playing it the game would simulate the weather from that area of Japan that day.

Why just the 360? Isn't coming out on just the original Xbox what killed the series' sales in the first place?
It came out on the Dreamcast.
Shenmue II came out exclusively for the original Xbox AND Dreamcast as well. What really killed Shenmue was the fact that it cost $70 million to make and you'd have to buy two copies per Dreamcast at the time to turn a profit.
the xbox version was just a direct port, the dreamcast was long gone when shenmue 2 came to the xbox.

I would buy 1000 copies of this if it would guarentee me Shenmue 3. Come on, finish the story!

It didn't come out on Xbox in North America, as far as I'm aware. And to be fair it only came out on Xbox here a while later and looked pretty dated by then.

That said Shenmue not becoming a completed saga is one of the greatest videogame tragedies.

Even though I still have the original disk... I may have to financially support this on the outside (read: infinitesimally small) chance that SEGA finally ends the trilogy.

I remember this being great. One of my favourite games at the time. I hope it isn't in English though because the English voice acting is bloody awful. So woodena and unspontanious.

I bought the Xbox version of Shenmue II last month and was shocked at how bad the voices were. I think on the dreamcast it was in Japanese though so it a lot better. Had so much more emotion

OT: I'd get this if it was for XBLA despite that rant.
The DC was English Dub as well. Some truely terrible voice acting, house of the dead bad. The "sailors" conversation in the bar is laugh out loud funny.

Having said that I still loved this game, collecting toys just because you want them, practicing your karate to get the skills, being able to go through every draw in your home...

It was immersive like nothing else I've played. Heres hoping they will finally finish the story.

No, it came out on the Xbox in NA. That was the entire reason for MS buying exclusivity for it's N.American release. They wanted a game from a somewhat reputable company.

Not really, the game came out the same year they discontinued the DC. But they were making a NA Dreamcast version of Shenmue II. They canceled it because the budget was already ridiculous and the franchise just wasn't popular in North America. Then again neither were Sega as a company or the Xbox at the time.

I might be flamed at, but what exactly is this game and what was so special about it people are humping it for the sake of nostalgia?

No offense intended, if anyone can inform me, quote and reply please.
It was an extremely innovative and gorgeous game for it's time. The characters were varied and quite lively without being completely irritating - and it gave a small peek into Japanese culture during the 1980's.

At the time of playing, I never understood why everyone would address people by name and say "-san" right after. But upon some research, I found out that it was a politeness thing.

The combat system was even pretty good for it's time and yet, it wasn't enough to learn a new move - you had to practice it via sparring or fighting to get it really good. Plus the Swallow Step was like something from The Matrix. Speaking of which, the 70 Person Battle was the Burly Brawl of it's day.

It was a very, very good game - it was definitely the Dreamcast's Killer App. The Dreamcast as a whole was a good console, it even had proper multiplayer - but the X Box and PS2 just had a wider selection and better games for it as a whole. Which then spelt doom for the Dreamcast.

But I digress... So that's why everyone has something of a soft spot for Shenmue.

We have both known so much hurt.
Having to import the European Shenmue 2 (and boot disc) just to play it.
...then having it come out for Xbox.

I bought a Dreamcast for that first game.
I bought a Xbox for the second.
I parsed through news bit after bit hoping...

...will I ever avenge my father and kill Lan Di?

I really hope this happens. Dug out my Dreamcast and original copies of the games a while ago, and they're still as incredible as ever. Fingers crossed this implies some thoughts about Shenmue 3/the final episodes. That would be amazing.

Ugh...more salt to rub in the gaping wound...

Hell, if for some odd reason they decided to continue with the Shenmue franchise that way I'd totally buy it...argh! Must. Not. Hope...

Shenmue II (the only one i played) still stands among the best games i have ever played.
The previous poster was right, the pacing was so slow as shit, in the first disk i got into like 2 fights.
Imagine playing a game that could genuinely put an interactive experience onto a disk that could rival the story of any book, could rival the visuals of any film and rival the beauty of the finest paintings ever created. The quality of the experience of Shenmue II is beyond anything that had ever been released. One of gamings finest moments which in my eyes simply hasnt yet been topped.
You werent playing as Ryo, you were Ryo.
My top 3 games ever are BioShock, Oblivion and Shenmue II. Bioshock and Oblivion will be knocked off this list well before Shenmue.

The 2400 microsoft points shivering isles costs and i never bought because it was always to much, are nothing compared to how much i would give to play this game. It deserves its ending.

Am I the only one who feel extreme aversion for Shenmue. I had it for the Dreamcast, I was put off by the game play, the pointless distractions and voice acting that makes 80's English dub of anime look like Oscar nominees. I would actually be upset to see a mention of this on PSN and XBLA.

I agree the English voice acting was terrible, but the game was just a masterpiece. A lot of people seem to compare Shenmue to the Yakuza games (since they are made by the same people). The problem in doing this is that Shenmue goes a lot deeper into realism. Yakuza is basically a vastly watered down version of Shenmue when you think about it (minus the story).

I strongly suggest acquiring Shenmue 1 using whatever means necessary. It's so good.
