I haven't been a big television watcher in years. The last time I watched a TV show on the night it aired was the second season of Lost. I catch Family Guy on Hulu during the day, and I just don't really watch any other shows. If there's something I'm interested in, I'll wait until it's on dvd/blu-ray and just get the season, but there aren't really any of those anymore either.

My TV is for movies and video games and the occasional football or baseball game. That's it.

TV isn't dying, programmes are. the shows they put on these days are no-where near as good as they were
Obviously you havent seen Dexter.

Of course shows are as good as before, they are in fact better. Your taste might be a bit higher up, but TV learn as do any mediums and because of that the quality of shows (not all of course.....) will rise. Storytelling, budgets, effects, all things will improve in time.

Nowadays we are in a bad period where reality-tv is everywhere. Reality-tv is the worst and cheapest kind of TV and if you compare for example Top Model to X-files or Twin Peaks you will be hard pressed to say TV today is better...but if we compare for example Dexter, True Blood, Buffy (I love the script/banter), Firefly, Avatar the last Airbender, 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory or any other actually good shows to the first season of big brother for example...the future looks very bright indeed.

I watch one hour of TV a week. Thursday night, 9pm on E4: Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother. That's it
I like a lot of shows, like Battlstar Galactica, South Park and so on but I just buy/borrow the box sets or watch them online. I really do not give a shit about TV. My friends and girlfriend watch a lot of TV but I don't get it at all

As long as there are shows as "Two and a half men" and "that 7o's show" i will always have the need to watch TV.

But with the progression of the internets, TV has lost a lot of its appeal.. And channels such as TV3 og Viasat4 have so much commercials in them that its discusting, a simple movie about 90 mins long, they use almost 3 hours to show..

MY GOD THAT IS ANNOYING!
Indeed commercials are annoying, but actually I think it's in the Norwegian tv commercial law that it's only allowed with 5min commercial, but TV3 and Viasat4 are broadcasting from other countries so they can have such long and annoying commercials.

OT: No I don't think TV is dying, but I do watch less since I use my PC so much, granted there are few tv shows I do watch.

TV will never 'die,' per se, as there will always be some incredibly out-of-touch old people who never realize that the internet exists. Neither has it declined in quality, as some rather amazing shows still get aired. (Doctor Who, Leverage, etc.)

It sure is starting to be a bit redundant, though.

I hope it isn't dying. I'm looking towards filming as a career :O

Movies will never die though so my role as cameraman isn't disappearing anytime soon.

I sure hope not. People who complain about nothing good being on TV just aren't trying. Here are a list of shows, currently airing, that I would recommend to just about anyone-

-Mad Men
-Breaking Bad
-Sons of Anarchy
-South Park (yes, still)
-The Daily Show
-The Colbert Report
-Damages
-Futurama (It's back, babeh!)
-Chuck
-Dexter
-Modern Family
-The Price is Right (greatest game-show ever, dammit)

Oh, would you look at that. All of those off the top of my head, and I can guarantee I missed a few good ones. Here's what I say to people who think "TV is dead". Don't watch MTV, VH1, or any reality shows. There, now bask in a golden age of television, dammit!

EDIT- Wow. House M.D., 30 Rock, and True Blood. Seriously shocked that I forgot House....

Considering that the only things showing are overly-serious dramas, gritty dramas about superheroes or vampires, comedy shows that should die (I'm looking at you family guy), soap operas or reality tv shows/talent shows that should die too that most people are sucked into I would say no.

Only thing I really watch now is comedy and thats because it is the only thing I find interesting on TV now and not utterly boring, screw sports, screw dramas, screw soaps and screw news.

They have taken off all of my favourite shows and now I only have a few comedies left so if my comedies go off all together I'm killing the television industry myself/

Well, as for me, it's been ages since I last turned on my TV without being seconds away of playing a video game or watching a movie. It's just easier to watch your shows on your computer, no ads and you watch them when you want to.

As a major in television journalism, I can tell you that 'no' is the answer to this thread. Even if television dies off, the internet will take its place. The internet will need tv shows as well. Made by pros. It works the same way anyway, cameras and people. So yes, television might die as a device, no, television will not die off as a profession.

No way.

Most of the stuff on youtube that is actually worth watching, has just been plucked from television. Some of the web reviewers are decent...but they're relying on other mediums to supply them with things to talk about, and it's no match for Boston Legal, Dexter or Arrested development...in terms of creativity or watchability.

You're watching it on your monitor...but it's still television. It's a legal means too, so they can count you as a viewer.

God I hope so. I would replace my tv today if I could.
What's stopping you? I got rid of mine in 2006 and haven't missed it at all. I can watch sports on the Internet via ESPN3 or buying league packages from the NBA or ESPN Full Court (all perfectly legal, no bootleg streams required), I'm not a console gamer so I don't need a TV for that, and all of the above saves me $50 a month I used to pay for cable service. Not to mention all the money I save from not being bombarded by commercials and getting it in my head that I want to buy something I don't need and wouldn't have wanted otherwise.

My TV will be necessary for as long as Stewart and Colbert are on the air. If their inevitable replacements aren't up to snuff, I'll consider it obsolete.

Yes, once we get statiliete (sp? those things that orbit the Earth) Internet cheaper TV will be dead. I hardly watch TV as it is as I can watch most of my shows online.

Regular TV is already dead to me. Built myself a cheap HTPC to get my TV online (and double as media server). Now my TV can show Dragonball Z and The Escapist at the same time.
