Is the 3DS a good system?

I've lately come in to possession of an unopened 3DS. Now, I didn't have to pay for this system (it was a gift from my family for my birthday), but I can return it if I want as it has gone unopened. Now, I'm having a hard time deciding if I want to keep it or not. The only other major thing I've actually considered getting is a Kindle, and I'm worried that it would go to waste (I don't too much anymore).

Of course, I've heard quite a few negitive things about the 3DS (people getting headaches and such), and it still doesn't have many games. But it will likely have a long life ahead of it and will play all of my old DS games... so is it worth it? I mean, I didn't pay anything for it myself, though I could likely at least get some of the money from returning it and get myself a kindle, but I just can't decide if I should keep it or not. Of course, one of the worst things that makes it hard to choose is that there are no demo units that I can try around. The closest one is about an hour's drive away.

So who, that has used it, think it's worth holding onto? I'd just like to get the opinions of some people who've actually used it before I make my decision.

Well, you can test it out without opening it!
Just find something extremely tiny and boring that can make you vomit, like a rotten egg, then consume it. Would you do that again? No? Then the 3DS is not for you! Yay! Simple test.

In all seriousness, it looks terrible and made me want to blargh on myself. Just my experience.

Yep, it's worth. So many games are coming out of the woodwork all the time, and I'm curious to see what's at E3. Don't judge on launch titles, so look at the list of upcoming games and you'll see, within a year this thing'll already have a huge library!

Honestly, battery life has been a non-issue. I've never gone past the first bar. Though your mileage may vary of course, but for a lot of people it's a non-issue.

And I don't care what people say, 3D is impressive. I never play without it!

It's unfair to judge the 3DS by it's current lineup. The DS had a pretty pathetic lineup at launch, too, and look how THAT turned out.

I say, if you liked the DS, hold onto that 3DS.

I have a friend who has one. It can play all the classic DS games. I hear that you need to be in a very specfic place in front of the screen to get the 3D effect at all, and that the battery life isn't very good.

I didn't pick up one because I'm not thrilled with the launch lineup, but if you're interested, go for it.

It's in the same situation that the DS was back when it launched.
System with unlimited potential but no fucking games other than Street fighter.

I'm in no rush to get one but if I received one as a gift and had no other expensive things I'd rather have, I'd definitely keep it. Once the flood of great titles starts pouring in, I'll seriously consider getting one, so long as the 3D is handled well. The slider/3D adjuster thing was a very good idea

A console or portable is only as good as its library of games. For that reason I'd say it's a complete POS at the moment, but considering all the announced titles in development, it might be worth holding onto. Personally I might pick one up someday, after they release the inevitable upgraded versions of it. 3DS XL or whatever. Basically I'm just holding out for a longer battery life.
Pretty much, exactly this.

Only im waiting for the inevitable updated rerelease of Pokemon B/W to get one.

Graphics wise:

It's good

The 3D is nice, but still just a gimmic and if you don't care about 3D in your games, then all it boils down to is a 250$ DSi with better graphics and less games.

Not much experience with it quite yet, but hey, you only get so many opportunities to become an early adopter. I've played it several times and the Headaches never hit, but the technology itself is very impressive. Also, is getting the Kindle just a whim, or have you thought of this for some time?

I'd hold onto it. The headache inducing 3D can be turned off, and without it it's basically a hardware updated DS that so far has shown some possible hints that Nintendo is improving it's 3rd party support and considering dropping it's habit of making games insultingly easy.

I'm in love with mine, personally. Admittedly I didn't buy a single 3ds game with it though and instead got a stack of DS games I'd missed out on since my last one bit the dust.

As others have said, the original DS lineup was pretty solid but has evolved into, in my opinion, the best commercial game library on the market. I'd say the 3DS's future looks pretty bright.

I would suggest waiting until the 1st party Nintendo games and 3DS store roll out. Right now it's not that great, but once the good games come out, it will be.

I'd keep it just because of the extensive DS library already out and because Nintendo tends to be awesome at handheld gaming. I personally wouldn't use the 3D too much (if at all), I found that I can see it quite easily but I get massive headaches after a few minutes or so.

YES! The 3DS is the sexiest thing since sex. I'm incredibly happy with my purchase.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It seems most have pointed out the main issues I personally have with it, one of the biggest being the tiny game library. But I'm sure that the production will pick up before long... this is Nintendo, and third parties seem to love them based on how much the Wii and DS were spammed with third party games.

I don't really care much about the 3D aspect to be honest, but the extra power and (hopefully) long life cycle makes it more appealing to me. I just think it'd be foolish to wait for a year or so until they come out with the next version if I have the chance to hold onto it now (not to mention I didn't have to pay much for it myself).

It is a whim, but it isn't... I've wanted one for about six months now, mainly because I hope having it would allow me to read more with the huge library of free books it has (most being older ones with no copyright) and not having to carry around a decent-weighing book all the time. I know I could get those free books on my computer, but I don't care for reading on a computer screen, so the e-ink is really appealing (except the fact it has no light of it's own...).

I'm a fan of the 3DS...for driving the prices of the old DS systems way down.
