Is the whole "Kony 2012" thing already over?

I notice I don't see this anymore. Type in Kony 2012 and you are some sort of social crusader just because you watched a viral video on youtube. Has everyone given up on this thing or is it still going?

Last I heard the founder was caught masturbating in public and the Ugandan government released a video saying that they had effectively stopped Kony, and someone else had risen up in his place (heard this from a friend so it isn't entirely trustworthy).

I'm quite glad it's over as quickly as it began.

More or less. As far as I was aware, Kony was sort of "defeated" back during 2007/8.

He had a good 20 year run, though. That was my problem with the Kony 2012 supports; that they didn't bother to research any further and find out just how long Kony had been doing those things for.

Hell, the fact that some people didn't know who he was beforehand was pretty shocking.

The charity was exposed as somewhat fraudulent, evangelist and homophobic.
The video itself was found to be distorting the facts of a very complex war to make things shiny, hollywoodised and hipster friendly.

And the founder......

I would HOPE that the campaign is dead.

The campaign was a flawed idea driven by a really strange group of people.
Also people only wanted to look good infront of their friends on facebook for a few days while it was being posted, now it's died down people have stopped, they didn't really care about the cause, they just wanted to 'fit in' with all the other people ranting and raving about it.

I thought it died down pretty quick actually, like in a matter of days. At least until this naked fiasco, and that's gonna die down probably just as quick too.

Didn't even know about it until I spotted a thread about it here last week.

Then forgot about it again until another thread a day or so ago. Then forgot about it again until this thread.

That is how much it interested me.

Now, what were we talking about again?

Pretty much this. It was a lunatic cause to begin with, and this is actually quite a hilarious end to it - Uganda itself saying 'Go away', and the guy running the whole scam being arrested for drunken public masturbation.

Outstanding.

I sure hope so. It was stupid either way. Mouse click activism at its "finest".

There might be a surge of interest if that "cover the night" thing ever happens, otherwise yeah, it's pretty much over. It was a flawed idea anyway. Making a criminal famous doesn't really guarantee that he/she will be brought to justice; it was just to darn idealistic from the start.

Well, we know he was caught having a wank in the streets.
The second part is what a lot of people like myself expected. You get one guy, some other guy replaces him. It's how shit works over there. They have hundreds of warlords we don't hear about...

I thought it had died already, just another social media internet warrior fad.

Give it a month and it will be something else entirely.
