Most sci-fi (as in, space opera type sci fi) games tend to have a great future for MOST people. Its just you, the player, who are always screwed.

Star Wars, Mass Effect, even Dead Space; the impression is given that most people are happy. Its just you whose fuckd to hell and back.

Do you mean like, the happy empire? Just curious to know what you mean by adding Star Wars, I always saw it as quite gloomy, but maybe the empire is good-ish?

Star Trek, as people have said, any game I've ever played with that has had a good future universe (the Star Trek universe). And I think once the Reapers are all killed in Mass Effect, at the end of Mass Effect 3, that will be a pretty hunky-doorey universe too.

But considering that presenting evidence is as simple as saying "There was a point in the game when _______ happened," I'm left with the reasonable assumption that you give no evidence because you have none.

You could argue that Mass Effect is a pretty decent place for the ordinary person- at least as likely as it is for life to be decent for someone playing that game. Bad and crazy shit happens, but not to very many people.

That and I've never played any Star Trek games, but I've heard from some Trekkie friends that the future, written by Gene Roddenbury is actually a pretty damn fine place- kind of a utopia, without any money or anything.

Think about it for a second - If you played a game set in the future, and that future was lovely and bright, what the hell would you need to do? Clean up the city? Buy out all the stores?

I'd argue Mass Effect, impending apocalypse aside it seems like a decent place to live. It's not a utopia by any measure, but it's no worse than present day.

Bear in mind that a *large* amount of sci-fi is based around the dystopian idea of the future. Also, you're only seeing part of the world, perhaps the rest of it is a very nice place. Take Dead Space, for example. The necromorphs are nasty, yes, but they are very localized. In fact, the games seem to be pretty civilized places before the aliens come and kill everyone. It could be flowers and sunshine on all the civilized planets.

Still better than most futures. Almost all of that can even be avoided if you stick to certain colonies and planets.

I was looking for this: I would also say that the Mass Effect universe is a really good future to be a part of...you know; Reapers, Batarian Slavers, Pissed Krogans, general racism being taken to ridiculous new heights, asteroids being used as weapons from mass destruction (heh: pun), other raids on frontier worlds (by races including but not exclusive to Batarians) and, the one I would dread the most, the possibility of falling in love with a young Asari, mating with her, marrying her, living to 160-years old (as a human) and dying. Your Asari widow being a 20-something according to her species and more than likely going to remarry. I am a romantic like that...I would try not to think about my blue-wife eventually finding another lover.

I mean, they have the basic human problems of prejudice and discrimination as well as all sorts of horrendous crimes unto one another, but the simple fact is that that would be common of all human futures. Because, as I'm sure I've said somehwere before, humans are dicks, and if we weren't we would not be human.

So when all of that's put to one side, what you're left with is a hyper-advanced galactic civilisation with a number of highly-efficient safety/security organisations in charge PLUS an agency of inter-species professional badasses who fix the shit that no-one else can. The fact that the games focus on all the bad stuff [footnote]And why wouldn't they? Okay...then what does it mean? If something "isn't right," that implies that it violates some sort of moral standard. Generally, that means some sort of "horrible secret" behind said society, especially if the things that would ordinarily make it "not right" aren't visible.

My original point (which got lost in translation... badly) that I totally failed to clarify is that there's something not right about it, as in "off" about it. So while there's no outright problems we can see (although the game doesn't give us much information), something about the atmosphere strikes me as... off. Funny. Not right.

Like say, for example, dozens of police officers appearing out of nowhere and opening fire on one specific runner with no provocation after a platonic "they don't bother us if we don't bother them" relationship between the two factions.

I'm personally hoping the sequel tells us more.
