Is there such thing as a good MMO(RPG)?

Eve online is by far the best MMO I've ever played. A user driven realistic economy? Check. Automatic skill level ups? Ruthless and unforgiving PvP aspect? Check. Genuine in-game politics that effect the whole universe? You better believe it mister.

On the topic, could anyone give me a good MMO? Preferably free or with at least a free trial.

I already play WoW & EVE before anyone say either of those.

I really love the generall concept of MMORPGs. No, I don't mean "try to upgrade a character and run instances with other people", I am talking about the whole "Adventure in a giant open world together with lots of other people". That is what I expected when I got into MMOs, adventure. That's not really what I got though.

Guild Wars is what I currently play and it's what has been the best for me yet, but it's still not close to good enough. It is able to focus less on upgrading a character and more on going thrugh a story in a world, however it does sacrifice the whole open world and lots of other players to do so.

It feels as if, players and developers alike get stuck in thinking about details. There is allways the talk of balance, new instances, the next game that is going to kill WoW. Before release all games are talked about, about what they will do differently, how this will be the final MMO, but to me, it feels as if it's the same game with only the details changed. I think, the key to a good MMORPG lies deeper in the gameplay, maybe someone should try to start over, think up the concept completley from the start, instead of assuming how MMORPGs "should" be.

I think, I am going to try City of Heroes/Villains next.

I was going to recommend the same thing Guild Wars is good for the poor and busy MMO player
Oooh, he caught me, I forgot to mention that there is no monthly fee. Just gotta buy the game and you're set.

There are no good MMOs. Simply takes up too much time.

I'm waiting for them to release 1000 players on the same map shooters like Battlefield n or something, then MMOs will die out. Well, or maybe some people actually like the grind..... is that possible(?)!

Guild Wars is a different take on the MMO, but it is beginning to drifft away from what an MMO is.

Myself, I F******* hate PvP, ganking irritates the living snot out of me, and I'd like to adventure and figure out a massive world with ever expanding unique content. Then some snot comes up behind me and now I'm dead. I don't freak, I don't call them names, I don't interfere with whatever they are doing. etc.

It still happens. So Guild Wars does not suit me.

The problem on top of that becomes the time commitment and the unvaried game-play. If the only way for me to move to a new area is by spending thirty or forty hours to level up to a point in which I might be able to survive the monsters in that new area. I don't have the time or attention span to enjoy it. If the only way to level up is killing thirty thousand monsters, same thing (and quest leveling NEVER amounts to anything). If the only way to solve these problems is making buddies with total strangers on the net so they'll play with me then I tell the game to officially bugger off.

I want to have the option of doing absolutely everything on my own and maybe make some friends along the way. I don't want to be forced into a position in which I have to make friends to play the game.

This sort of thinking is why a lot of people don't go the MMO route. There is a market out there for a solution to these issues.

No good MMOs...r-i-g-h-t. Doesn't gaming then just take up to much time?

There already MMOFPSs with 1000+ players.

Yes people like grind look at asia.

Well I play www.Roma-Victor.com

I've played WoW I own AoC but I'd rather play this game,
it's a small company and the players built the story line from ground up.
Its pretty much Roman vs. Barbarians, In hadrians wall.
its a historical MMORPG,

someday it'll be like a mini rome total war haha.

It's got its flaws and its hard to play and understand.
but as of now, its the closest thing to a real online RPG

I play World of Warcraft-- have for about two years now. The reason I enjoy it is because I like social gaming. I also enjoy the competition that comes naturally when you're trying to be better than millions of people.

I played Age of Conan during its first few weeks. It has great potential-- it simply wasn't ready to be released when it was released.

Obviously, some games simply aren't for some people. MMOs aren't for people that lack dedication, patience, and temperance. I feel that too many people have too narrow a view of "gaming"-- they think it can only be one thing to be "good". They demand instant gratification, whereas others can appreciate a reward that has taken many long hours to achieve.

I personally love the idea of MMO's but all the ones I know of are complete piles of shit.

When you see that theres 30000 people playing online you think "hell yeah!", crazy ass PvP battles with 1000 a side, team leaders shouting orders and action everywhere. You register and create a character named 'Truck Badass' (the most badass name there is) and then find yourself in some lame ass meadow with a quest from some old loser to kill a thousand butterflies. You'd start if it wasn't for all the other tools swarming towards them the second they spawn and shouting 'n33d h0+ gf!!1' and 'phr33 $tuff p133zz!!1'.

Well that's all I've gotten from MMO's so far. I have a school to go to. I have homework. I have a job. I have friends to hang out with on the weekends. I don't have ten years to level a character to six million so that I can compete on the botom rung of PvP. I play games for at most an hour a day (two if I don't have homework). I can handle SOME grind but obviously not heaps. Is there an MMO out there that would suit? I'm not optimistic but I thought I'd ask anyway.

If you play an MMO post why you like it, whats good, whats bad, if you'd reccomend it...that sort of stuff. Alternatively you could just rant about how bad they are and what a disgusting, greasy, sweaty stain they are on the backside of the gaming world. Both good! Post away!
Go play BF2?

Every possible reason you would want to name your character "Truck Badass" makes me think you would not enjoy any MMORPG out there, I'd stick to MMO shooters, like Battlefield and whatnot

One thing that too me would make a good MMO is a world influenced by player politics and wars. While EVE does this well, I'm more of a fantasy than a sci-fi fan. Warhammer looks good because you can PvP right from the start and you get to fight for control of areas. So it's constant PvP war with just enough quests and PvE to entertain those who love the Warhammer lore. And I think I remember that sometimes NPCs will fight with you to balance the fight or something to that effect.
There is a MMO in the works thats like EvE but fantasy based looking REALLY good.

Short answer, you probably won't find what you're looking for.

A suggestion, is PSO:BB. Yes, it's a dying game, but on a certain private server it's still alive. You can level up as slowly or quickly as you want, max groups of four if you want company or you can play solo. It's grindtastic like all MMOs, but you're actually moving and fighting vs. playing "waiting for cooldowns".

From the Huxley Wikipedia page:
"The battles can be as small as 1 VS 1 or as big as 60 VS 60 players (120) and 100 vs 100 in the PC version of the game"

Sounds good. I'll say I'm interested. We'll see how it turns out.
Eh, still pales in comparison to mag, Its going to hold 256 on the ps3. Thats 56 more then that no subscription fees either.

Unfortunately, the game you want to play doesn't exist yet.

With the technological capacity of average PC gamers today, PvP battles featuring more than 50 players is simply illogical. With more players comes more lag, more frame-rate issues, and more griefers. If you're looking for an action-packed high octane battle scene between you and thousands of players, you'll need to wait for years to come.

In my experience, free MMOs, when compared to Pay to play MMOs, aren't worth the time or the not money. However, no MMO will be worth the time if you're not cool with the thought of waiting around for an hour until you can start having fun.

No its not that high octane battles can not be hosted its because the quality of the servers suck donkey nuts. Take WoW for instance. You get a realm and no matter what if you want to PVP you have to share the server with up to 2000 other people.

Hold out for Jumpgate: Evolution.

Happened all the time on PVP servers on WoW, pre-TBC.

Do 256 people actually own a PS3?

Besides, we pay subscription fees for customer service, dynamic content as well as stable servers. 256 people hosted over a few meg lines? Ew.
