Is... is he serious?

I think you should give him support, but in the way that he wants. Steer him away from that line of thought, and make him question his belief. It sounds like he needs a bit of help realizing what's possible for him to accomplish and what he should be striving for.
Off topic...

I gotta know what the clip in that gif came from. It's hilarious.

You should tell him he would get better results if he went back in the past and literally fucked himself. Then at least when it comes back into the present, and you tell him to go fuck himself, he can actually relate

It's Transpoerter the movie. The text isn't really present there, it's just Jason Statham...well be Jason Statham and kick down the door.

I say go with the whole, "help him get over her" path first. if that fails, then just explain to him how kidnapping himself would create a paradox.

I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I can't help you. I saw it on the internet one day and I thought it was funny, so I saved it to my computer. I don't know where it's from.

I'm sorry, are you suggesting that time travel isn't possible? Are you telling me that the time machine I'm building in my garage is never going to work?!

You can't time travel if it isn't part of the timeline.
If it didn't happen, it can't happen.

You should tell him that time travel is impossible, then man up and tell HIM to man up and move on.

...kinda simple and easy. And yes, it is that easy.

Tell him to watch Primer.
The most realistic time travel I've ever seen but the point being... GOING BACKWARDS MAKES NO LOGICAL SENSE (if only one timeline/dimension is involved (unless you go by the theory that every timeleap creates and new and separate dimension in which you have time traveled leaving a dimension where you simply cease to exist).
When he sees the light he will simply give up on time travel.

I've often thought about what it would be like if I could sort of Quantum Leap back to my younger self (like when I was a really young) and then just go back through life with all the knowledge of events I would have from my life. Of course, after I was fairly old like 70 or so. Think of all the things I could have done differently. Maybe fixed a few things before they went wrong.

Then, I stop daydreaming and go back to doing something constructive, or at least fun.

I'm going to hope your friend snaps out of it. Or was just messing with you. Or waxing poetic about it. Because, otherwise, he might need professional help.

Tell him that if he does go back, Scarroth the Jagaroth will prevent his people from leaving the Earth and exploding, thus dooming all life on this planet.

Failing that, tell him to watch every time travel show or movie that immediately points out that changing history is BAD.

I have a time machine he can borrow. I've been working on it for years. Only problem is that it only goes forward in time at 1x speed.

This seems very relevant:

Let me summarize the basic plot leading up to that for you. (And no, this is not spoilered as it refers to the basic premise that the film used to justify the trip to the future).

As you may or may not be aware, the above scene is from the 2002 film adaptation of the Time Machine. The protagonist's girlfriend dies, so he makes a time machine for the explicit and specific reason of saving her life. He prevents the incident that caused her death...and then she dies a different way at a similar time. He tries again, and she dies again. Ultimately, he travels forward in time to figure out if he can actually save her.

The scene above is where
after getting a brief glimpse of the life he was trying to secure - he is told in no uncertain terms the core flaw of his idea. Simply put, you can't change your own history in a way that eliminates the very reason you decided to develop a time machine. Granted, Time Travel laws vary widely based on author, but the similar motives here definitely seem to strike a chord.

A good friend has a strong pimp slap for just tehse types of situations and thats all Im really going to say other than he may need a straight jacket more than a time machine.

So today me and this guy are talking. He brings up regular show. Specifically this episode.
And lo and behold; He brings up time travel. Why? Cuz he says he wants to go back to the past and change some situation right now regarding an ex-girlfriend. Then he keeps telling me now he want to go back to the past and and kidnap his past self.I SHIT YOU PEOPLE NOT. And he's so adamant in that delusion. I tell him he needs to let her go, he keeps saying he needs to go back. He even says that him and I need to research time travel. I'm like: ARE YOU FOR REAL RIGHT NOW? And then keeps telling me that I don't understand his situation. What I understood is that he is losing it. So your toughts?
First off, I want to thank you for introducing me to the Regular Show. It seems pretty interesting and I was wondering if the rest of the series is just as good or if this episode is a rare gem in the series?

OT: Theoretical time travel rarely works in our favor. There is a possibility that no matter what he tries to do, the past is the past and the events cannot be changed, no matter how hard he tries. If he somehow manages to change the past, his own timeline would remain unchanged or he would just create a paradox which will cause an equally devastating event to occur in his life to compensate for keeping his girlfriend.

Just let dreamers be dreamers and let him be some other dimension's problem.

Point out to him that it's difficult to travel back in time to before when the time machine was built... it'll unbuild itself.

Also, have him consider seeing a counselor.
