Is this racist, does my teacher have a right to punish me for this?

First off how is "colored people" racist? If you had reversed it to "people of color" to describe "all non Caucasians" certain over sensitive Individuals wouldn't have opened their mouths. I don't see a problem.

So, you have a psych teacher that's too stupid to realize that 1) The majority of the members of an ethnicity are primarily attracted to the same ethnic group. That's why we still have them after thousands of years of society. 2) You shouldn't ask a question in a thinking profession like psychology and then punish the answer you don't like.

I would definitely challenge this at the next level. Guidance Counselor, principal, etc.

Is this right? Am I a racist, just for finding one skin color more physically appealing than the others?
no, it wasnt racist at all. i myself am not attracted to a few different races, mainly because of their dark skin. im just not into it. its not a racist thing, i dont even like when normally light-skinned girls have a dark tan.

you should tell your parents, or complain to the principle or something.

or... you could troll her. make a new list, with everything else unchanged. replace "white skin" with "no penis". then, below in parenthesis, write something like (I am not homophobic. Please do not punish me)

just a suggestion. either way, dont write the essay. its BS and she had no right to punish you.

also, if at some point in the future you find yourself having to describe physical traits you are attracted to, use the word "light" instead of "white". it just sounds less racist to stupid people like your teacher.

It's not racist to find something more attractive base on colour, it's no different in reguards to hair and eyes

I would dispute it. But in the future you should say you prefer 'pale skin'. And then if someone gets offended, just act surprised and say it's because you love Goth girls.

We were discussing attraction in psychology today and we did a worksheet, one of the questions being about what we find attractive in the opposite sex. When it got to which physical characteristics we find most attractive, I listed:

somewhat tall
healthy-looking, ie in good shape but not too skinny
dark hair
white skin

and some other things, but that last one was what got me in trouble. Now, at no point did I say I find other skin colors unattractive, and I did not say that I find colored people unattractive, just for their skin color. All I said was that it was one of many physical characteristics (saying nothing of personality and intellectual traits) that I find attractive. And also, it's not like I'd turn down a girl just because of her skin color, to me it's just one trait that I notice, and there are many more (saying nothing of intellectual and personality traits). To me, dating a black or asian girl would be no different than dating a blonde, yes I prefer dark to blonde hair but I can still find her attractive and nice (hopefully). I thought I was being honest about a personal opinion in a mature discussion about a mature topic.

In short, it's no different than my finding dark brown hair more attractive than light blonde hair. It's only a superficial thing.

Anyway, she didn't even give me a chance to explain what I meant by that, and wouldn't hear a word of it when I tried. Now I have to write a paper about racial tolerance. Is this right? Am I a racist, just for finding one skin color more physically appealing than the others?

EDIT/UPDATE: Okay, so the term 'colored people' comes off as racist. Just a poor choice of words on my part, sorry. I'd actually been told it was the politically correct term.
I can see where they got the racist bit from (maybe you should have clarified the 'white skin', but even then it shouldnt cause a conflict because its what you find attractive. Its like, my mum would probably have written that she liked someone who's Chinese, doesnt mean she doesnt like other races etc, just that she finds Chinese sexy (and the kids absolutely gorgeous lol)

Maybe if you ever come up against a similar question in the future, try to word it slightly better else explain your choice so that people understand it

You can't help who you're attracted to. Maybe you could have phrased it better, but that doesn't make you a racist.

Does this make gay men chauvenistic by holding preferences in what sex they like to sleep with, failing to appreciate the appeal of women and how they should be treated exactly the same?
No, in either case its simply a matter of personal preference, by the logic that displaying preference eqautes with ineqaulity isn't homophobia justified?

You're teacher is in the wrong here, you can perfectly well prefer a paler girl and not be a bigot. Unfortunately, just because you're right doesn't mean you wont have to write the essay. Scrolling through the replies here there were some excellent suggestions however.

Colored people? lol
Feels like I just traveled to 1960.
you needed to be told a politically correct term? Now I know you didnt mean to be racist with your paper. smh.

But White skin does sound racist. Fair skin, cool. White skin sounds like..."No Darkies". Which is perfectly fine, just sounds offensive. Me personally Im not attracted to white women unless they have a tan. *shrug*
I like the responses in this thread, lets me know JUST whos out there, you know?

White people have white skin. Colored people have colored skins.

Racism is the belief that there are inherent different traits in human racial groups which justify discrimination.

Nothing racist here, move along.

Are you denying Asians, Hispanics and Blacks have colored skins? Hilarious! What should we call it then? I don't know any other word for color than color.

Again, "Racism is the belief that there are inherent different traits in human racial groups which justify discrimination.".

Calling people black, white or yellow is not racism, don't be ridiculous.

Tell her to go F' off and learn what tolerance actually means. Just because you do not find darker skin (be it black, Mediterranean, South American, etc) attractive on the sexual scale does not mean she has the right to punish you.

I'd write an article on how "people of color" seem to believe that their past should be taken into consideration, how much suffering they had to endure, and how they seem to think that word usage should dictate situations in which no offense was truly taken. She can't handle the truth or how you feel? That's her blemish.

you go up to her and call her out on her bullshit! and if she gives you shit, go to the principle! that not racist, and she should punish you for that either!

I would describe my girlfriend by her ethnicity since that is a lot more accurate than skin color. But please do tell, what other terms for white, black and yellow do you know? Pink, gray and orange?

If I went to an Asian man and said he was yellow I would be stating a fact (it wouldn't make much sense to do so though since I'm positive Asians are aware what skin color they are). But please, I'm eagerly awaiting to hear how stating a fact is racist. Remember the definition of racism!

Racism is the belief that there are inherent different traits in human racial groups which justify discrimination.

I'm sorry, but nowhere does it say that saying person X is color Y is racist.

Frankly, I find being asked what you find attractive in the opposite sex to be genderist.

Well being a person of color. Ive said that a girl is "White" but not shes whiteskinned? she has a tan, shes pale. Youre playing the politics of the word. You know exactly what it means and how its used. With Black people, theres BROWN, Light BROWN, DARK brown. Ive even heard white men refered to as "Tall, dark and handsome." Theres an answer. Are you going to say that isnt real? But like I said, keep the bs moving. Youre not worth speaking to when you dont see the indecency of calling someone yellow skinned.

Pardon me? You yourself are saying "This girl is white.", but when I say "That man is yellow." it's racist? Hilarious! And what difference would saying 'white' or 'whiteskinned' even make? It means exactly the same.

Please do notice that stating facts cannot be racist. Thank you.
