The only time that phrase makes any sense is when it's directed at someone who is getting really pissed off about losing, otherwise it doesn't really work.

I'm sure a good portion of people who actually use the phrase really don't care too much about their performance in a multiplayer scenario, or about games in general. You can tell when someone in a game is putting forth effort and when they're not. I find it when someone "serious" uses the phrase, they're half a step away from exploding and crying. I'd rather just let them save face and ragequit.
