To be honest, I don't see why people get so riled up about that show.
I really enjoyed it when I watched it, but I didn't do so under some pretense that it was a horribly deep and emotional story.
I found it suitably dramatic and dark, and the plot was sufficiently engaging.
I don't recommend it in anime threads anymore though, since it invariably causes all the people who think something can't be art if it contains fanservice and all the guys who think the show is far deeper a work than it is to break out into an instant heated debate regarding how great/pretentious Elfen lied is.
I think it has something to do with the over the top gore to mind fuckery ratio, normally if the anime has loads of gore it has to make your brain melt, and while elfen lied is like that, it's not on the same scale as Gantz or evangelion.

I have a frothing hatred of One Piece and Naruto, Bleach not so much as I haven't actually seen it yet.
I know the big gripes with Naruto and Bleach, but what is wrong with One Piece, filler? I am only on episode 28 as of now.

Currently re-watching Black Lagoon. MAN, I missed this show. Defenitely one of the better ones, in my opinion. Also, although this one is NOT for everyone (being serious here), how about Berserk? Just got done re-reading it 2 months ago. Very dark and horrific, and the themes that it covers are well executed (again, in my opinion). Surely not for all audiences, but I think it was a good one.

Finally, Neon Genesis Evangelion. I'm not sure there's anything I can say about it at this point that hasn't already been said and/or flamed to death, but I loved it.

I have recently ignited a deep love of One Piece, after discovering the dark, evil grip that 4kids had around it's throat. To any of you who don't understand what I mean, One Piece is insanely popular over in japan, however when dubbed for the west 4kids attempted to change into an entirely kid focused anime, from bad overly silly dubs, to removing a black character.... I wish I was joking.
All so Pirates are cool :p

I made this thread for anyone who wants to recommend a good anime, or in general give a few tid bits of information about one.

Not the most direct discussion ever, but I hope this thread turns out well :D
My first anime ever was One Piece, which got me hooked, I covered all 500 episodes in two weeks, and now my friend keeps on supplying me with new animes, I am currently watching Soul Eater which I enjoy, watched Death Note, I've also watched a bit of Fullmetal Alchemist (not Brotherhood) one friend has said I should watch Bleach, I've also been told to watch Fairy Tail, all I can really think off.

Watch Clannad though. Just do it.
Wait, so I'm a dumbass round eyed person for watching Batman?
Yup. It doesn't have the deep plot and meaningful character development that Naruto has.
I'm still not sure if you're being serious or not.

Bleach is 90% filler which is the main thing that put me off, or at least it avoided the main story line like the plague at points.
All I can say is the classic gurren lagann, and the MUST WATCH FLCL.

I was going to reply, but I wasn't sure either, and it was kinda pointless post so I didn't bother.

Naturally, a series is exempt from this rule if it includes zombies.
Nah, those people who think that a series can't have silly scenes or fanservice and still be art or have some sort of deep message really annoy me.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TrueArtIsAngsty
But then again, the people who treat Elfen lied like it's the coming of some messiah, ranting on about symbolism and stuff, annoy me as well.

Reborn turns to shit when it decides to turn serious. It takes a plot line that was made for a joke and tries to make it into something seriously pointless. How the fuck was Baby Hitmans ever meant to be taken serious. What bullshit. They also replaced poke balls with frikkin boxes, wtf?!?!?
Katekyo Hitmaan Reborn turned to shit when it got serious? I would say it is the exact opposite. The first 20 episodes were the shittiest part of the series (Not that I think that they were actually shit. Just the least good.). And there was always a legitimate reason behind why Reborn is a baby. *Spoiler* He was a human before who was turned into a baby due to a curse *Spoiler*. I don't see why you can't take the show seriously as a whole just because you can't seem to take reborn seriously. While it did basically pull an Aizen chasing saga bleach move on us with the Future/Byakuran Arc which was a little bit dull because everyone seemed to be a bit to over powered and it dragged on for too long, the rest of the series is great (IMO). Who ever said that the plot line was made for a joke. You might have just assumed that from the first episodes, but I doubt that the author didn't foresee that his own story would take a turn for the serious after 20 episodes worth of chapters and just suddenly decided, "Hm, I'm going to turn a slice of life comedy into a serious fantasy action story!". And as for the pokeballs to boxes, I think that your just too fixated on pokemon, so I'm not even going to get into that because there's no point.
It is clear that we are on different wave lengths here. The fact is I started to watch this series out of comedy, it was hilarious. I know the whole story, i watched it until the end with disapointment. Admitedly somehow the series manages to make itself look cool when it turns serious but that doesn't mean that it wasn't dull and typical. I'm glad we can both see how the future part was pretty ridiculous; fight scenes which involved thinking over every single move with little action which took forever and only seemed to slightly bruise the enemy; also Tsuna was a pussy throughout, always wining about how he is just a kid and should not be involved with the mafia. It's not just Reborn but the fact that originally Tsuna's dying will mode would make him be stripped apart from his boxers. How are you not seeing that this series was turned serious in an attempt to win over the continueity crowd rubbish. Also the fact that some of the 'box weapons' have animals attached to them also makes a mega comparison to pokemon.

Would it help if I stressed the superb animation and touching backstory flashbacks as some of the factors that make it so great?

One I watched recently was cowboy bebop, loved every episode. Good characters (in my opinion), good anothological approach, an action packed last episode and overall a great soundtrack.

What do you mean?
Personally, I see zombies as gore. Unless they're the very old rotten kind.

And since this is a general anime thread or something, I'll just post something unrelated:

it's that sort of thread, I couldn't think of anything specific, so I thought why not keep it vague, hell might even get more then the 4 pages for once (cross my fingers) most the time my threads sit dead unless I reply to near enough every comments, but I do that anyway XD.

I don't really have anything to add in terms of simple "This is awesome, go watch it", but I walked past some friends when going to the toilet yesterday, and all I heard from their conversation was "Seed and Seed Destiny are the best".

My reaction..."I WILL STAB YOU NOW!"

I will be frank and honest: I do not like anime.

Though, I have seen two movies which I enjoyed very much, despite the fact that they are anime.

Paprika
and Perfect Blue

Both were made by the same director, and they're great films.
I am also a fan of Satoshi Kon, I recommend you watch all his work since it is incredibly imaginative, dealing with dreams and other figments of psychology. Most of his work is films although he did do one series called 'Paranoia Agent', pretty fucked up but clever and amazing all the same. It's a shame Satoshi Kon died last year, he had so much more to offer!

Oh my, finally a thread were I can promote my current obsession? Great! ...it is the choice of the Steins;Gate after all...

I'm pretty tired right now, so I'll keep it short. Steins;gate is about a group of friends who have, during their wacky experiments they do for fun, accidently converted their microwave into a device that can send text messages into the past. Trying to discover the potential of the device, Okabe Rintarou uses it numeral times. But messing with time is tricky business, and Okabe learns that the hard way...

I'll tell you now, you have to take the science used to back up the plot with a grain of salt, because after some thought it comes down to a sort of fridge logic. Also, the main character needs to grow on you a bit. But seriously, you will be able to relate to him over time.

Damn. I thought I would keep this short... Oh well. I'll just say Steins;Gate works as a time travel story, so to speak. It has rich, likable characters, an interesting plot, and some severe psychological terror. To me it shot up to the caliber of Bakemonogatari and the like.

Currently my fave anime, and I have seen more than a few, so I guess that says something.

Okay, I officially hate 4kids. I mean look what they did to One Piece!

I get why they would remove the blood and explicit nudity, but why turn the guns into water guns? Why remove all references to smoking, especially considering one of the characters in named Smoker? And why remove even the most mild hint of cleavage? Do boobs kill people?

That being said, I tried to get into One Piece. I started reading the manga to experience the source material. But I just can't. I can't get past the whole "I'm a pirate" thing. Especially since everywhere they go, Luffy claims to be a pirate and people freak out. Then, they get shocked when he fights "other pirates" to protect them. It's especially bad considering that Zoro is a pirate hunter and joined the group. It might seem shallow, but I just couldn't get past that. Everyone hates pirates yet Luffy insists on calling himself one. They are more like pirate hunters.

Anyway, I'm more into manga nowadays. It avoids the filler. So, here are two good action manga.
It's about this kid that starts training with 6 master martial artists. It starts off with him just trying to be strong enough to do whats right and defeat troublemakers, but eventually he actually gets involved in a huge battle between his masters and another rival philosophy of martial arts. It has some great fights between martial artists. Things don't really get ridiculous until the masters start fighting.

It follows a young swordsman named Gamaran who is a prodigy in the Ogame school. His skill is unmatched and he initially gets entered into a tournament. As you might expect things get pretty intense since he's fighting alone against whole schools. Eventually we learn that his father is involved in a plot to conquer all of Japan and he is fighting against him.

I'll also recommend 666 Satan, known as O-Parts Hunter in the states, as it's a very good manga. I even heard they might make it into an anime. Unlike those others it actually has an ending, too.

I find that so long as you come up with a relatively easy to grasp question - preferably something slightly controversial - and post it around the time of day when the Americans are invading the boards, you'll get a decent amount of replies. (For example, I once had a 13 page thread running that simply asked whether Paedophiles should be put in jail. This was before the Paedophilia-thread ban though.)

That, or just do something that anyone can relate to or can have something to say about. (e.g. I once had a reasonably succesful thread simply asking what was the worst thing that ever happened to the commenters' genitals.)
