Of course.
I improvised for 45 minutes straight two weeks ago...
(Solo, no band...)
I'm not quite good enough at piano to start writing my own music or improvising yet... I've only been playing for six months. Give me some time though and I might be able to jam along with you! On opposite sides of the world.
Eventually. You'll get there!
Improvising is really really really really fun.
There really isn't anything to compare it to.

I don't mind actually being able to play a song properly, because I'm not sure if I'm the creative type when it comes to music or not. I guess I'm going to have to wait to find out when I'm better at it and can move my hands faster and understand what cords work well together and such. At the moment I'm just happy when I can play a song I like!

Make sure you play your scales :)
That's how you get good.

That's cool too. I like playing songs the way they're written to, both methods are great, in different situations.

AAUGGH! You sound just like my tutor! I bregrudingly play scales even though I know they're awesome for me... I just can't bring myself to practice them regularly. I don't know why.

I know all about hating scales, believe me, I've played piano for ten years now.
Just play them as fast as you can, both hands, multiple octaves. That keeps 'em fun, a little.

Make sure you learn all 48 of the basic ones, then throw in some modes, pentatonics, blues scales...
Be sure you study your chords too!

Lol, actually I felt guilty about not practicing them as often as I should have when you mentioned it before so I've just been on the piano practicing C major, two hands two octaves. I know we'll be going over scales in my lesson today... Why does something so annoying have to be so good for learning?

I don't know. I have a paper with all the scales in the world on it...
There are hundreds.
It's scary to look at.

Two octaves is good, though. Good start.

Thankyou. I was thinking just then, I would love to hear you play. I mean, you've been playing for so long and some of the improv stuff you're doing would sound fantastic, would you be interested in posting a video of yourself playing the piano? I was thinking of putting some videos of myself up the other day on Lab's artist thread, except the only videos I have were taken off a camera phone so the sound quality is shot.

Could it be that we encourage other Escapists to post videos of themselves playing music, either songs they love or stuff they've made up? Would you be interesed in doing something like that? If so I'll PM Lab and see if she would want it posted in her artist thread or to make a new one dedicated to just people being able to post videos of themselves playing. I think it would be a really fun thing for the community to do.

Honestly, I've wanted to do that for ages.
I don't have a decent microphone, though.
Or any microphone at all...

Don't worry, I'm doing it as we speak... just recording a nice opening song for the thread. I would love for you to contribute to it at some stage, I'll need a little while to get it set up though, so watch this space!

By the way, we're not friends yet and that surprises me. I'll go fix that!

I would love to.
I'll see what I can do, but I can't promise anything. Maybe I can ghetto-rig something, but I'm not that good with electronics.

It'll be great if you can! I'm still recording... stupid mistakes!

Lol I was just re-reading the strip about hannelore's list of untrustworthy animals as I started reading this thread. But alas, was beaten to the punch.

We'll see.
I'll do my best.
I performed yesterday, actually. With my school's band.
It was cool.
We only played for half an hour, though...

Hey, check out the thread! (Escapist Jam Session). I just posted Bach's Prelude in C major on it, I hope you enjoy it, I'd love to hear you post something on there.

Link me, so I don't have to go dig it up!
I'd love to, as soon as I can get something recorded.
