At least you'll learn one of two things from this.Akai Shizuku said:AVG and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Used them at least once a week. They were up to date as far as I knew. I think I got the virus from pirated games.Binerexis said:What antivirus program and antimalware program were you using? Were they up to date? How often did you scan? How do you think you got the virus?
My mom threw them out. Where exactly can I go on the web to get them?Mekado said:Probably means the drivers you got on cd when you bought the computer (video card driver/motherboard drivers/whatever special stuff's in your computer drivers)Akai Shizuku said:I'm not quite sure what you mean by "get those drivers". Could you please explain to me? ^_^"dududf said:First off, go to another computer and GET THOSE DRIVERS, do that before your reformat.
I'd suggest not taking the irreplaceable, if it's a word file, try to retype, if it's a picture file, go upload it online to tinypic.com They MAY be infected, and frankly you don't want that on the new computer.
Secondly, some virus' plug them selves onto USB drives.
Frankly just nuke it, and move on. From the sounds of it there's no going back.
____________
Side note, can someone reccomend me a good firewall/antivirus something? Just something to PREVENT them coming in.
Thanks.
You can all get them (the latest version too) from the web though, if you can at least get your internet connection up and running (probably on the motherboard drivers, if your LAN card is integrated)
It's not. You'll get these drivers from your motherboard manufacturer, not your ISP,they are physical devices drivers.Akai Shizuku said:My mom threw them out. My ISP is Rogers, if that's important.
I don't have the disk anymore, though...my mom threw it out.ratix2 said:first off, if your anti virus is norton or macafee:

and then go get something GOOD. both avira antivir and avast! antivirus are good ones, and both are freeware. the first one in fact has the highest detection rate of any av program and one of the lowest rates for false positives.
in any case, if you nuke the hard drive make sure to put a good av program on BEFORE you transfer back any saved files, otherwise you run the risk of getting that nasty virus back if one of them happens to be infected. most likely none of them will be but its best to not take any chances.
to wipe the hard drive just put the windows installation disc in the drive, restart the computer and go into the bios (hit either delete or f2 AS SOON AS the computer is booting up) and look for the option to change the primary boot device. then set that to boot from the optical (cd/dvd) drive instead of the hard drive, exit AND SAVE when youve done this, then just follow the on screen instructions. when you get to the installation screen look for the format hard drive option (may just be format depending on the os), and format your computers primary hard drive. once thats done just install the os to that and your good to go.
So, do I need to call Dell or Microsoft?Mekado said:It's not. You'll get these drivers from your motherboard manufacturer, not your ISP,they are physical devices drivers.Akai Shizuku said:My mom threw them out. Thast unfair, as I siad we get these all the time on computers that are only used for office work and webrowsing. There is no .exe to run, they install themselves as pose as secruity software.Binerexis said:1. Not to download pirate games
2. Think a bit more before double clicking a .exe file from a torrent

Not to change the subject, but why is Norton no good? I've been using it, and I haven't gotten anything, though I also use Ad-Aware for malware scans. Norton has picked up things for me before, it isn't like I paid for nothing.ratix2 said:first off, if your anti virus is norton or macafee:

It's not the detection part that's subpar (although it's nothing special either) it's that Norton (and McAfee) is a huge ressource hog, it dosen't show that much on a brand spanking new computer but it takes way way more juice than other antiviruses (for the exact same end result).chronobreak said:Not to change the subject, but why is Norton no good? If you use firefox, I'd suggest getting the Web of Trust add-on, since that helps you avoid malicious sites. And as the others said, your best bet would be to just format your hard drive, since you said you have everything savedAkai Shizuku said:Let's just say I don't pay for half of my DS games.ElephantGuts said:Do you have any idea how you got the virus?

I guess you're right. I've got a Phenom quad-core with 3GB DDR2 dual-channel memory, 500gb Hard Drive, I don't know if that's considered good in the realm of computers but it hasn't given me any trouble, though IE does run a little slower during a scan. I'd like to think the $60 is good in case you need support, but I haven't had to use it yet, so maybe I am paying for nothing.Mekado said:It's not the detection part that's subpar (although it's nothing special either) it's that Norton (and McAfee) is a huge ressource hog, it dosen't show that much on a brand spanking new computer but it takes way way more juice than other antiviruses (for the exact same end result).
It also costs 60$ for something a free antivirus can do just as well.
You do know that 60$ is only good for a year right ? antiviruses are subscription-based, you'll have to repay every year to keep your AV updatedchronobreak said:I guess you're right.
