Don't care.
I hate the Wii with a burning passion.

EDIT: actually, if this continues, we may have something to worry about on other consoles.
They need to drop prices for PS3 games.
Period.

Its why I don't have a girlfriend!
Its why the weather lately is either soaking wet or roasting hot with no middle ground!
Its why Activison exist!
Its why space travel is so expensive and hard....

Ok, think I got it out of my system.

Like some have said, it is a combination of many things, including everyone already has a Wii already!

If they'd actually encouraged the shovelware to drop dead and tried to get people interested in a more 'hardcore' experience (for lack of a better word) the customers might actually see gaming as a full time entertainment media rather than the fisher price take it out occasionally toy it is now.
The PS2 had shovelware too and that was before Nintendo created "casual" gamers. The shovelware back then was aimed at "hardcore" gamers and their mothers. Where else could something like Ninjabread Man come from?

...The Japanese economy has also TANKED. And tanked HARD--the downturn is hitting Japan extremely hard because it is an export-based economy
Hm, intersting, I'm not getting the impression that Germany is getting hit hard and at least last year it was the biggest exporter in the world (yes, ahead of China!).

I'd say that since almost everyone as a wii, there is no reason for them to rise again.
People said that last year too. They say it EVERY SINGLE TIME a popular console gets lower sales. They said it when consoles had an install base of barely 30 million while the PS2 allegedly has 140 million and the DS is closing in on that, the Wii is nowhere close to that mark.

Is it just for the Wii, or in general? Because I can imagine Wii sales slowing down. Everyone has one now. Why buy more?

We all know FF XIII will sell millions of copies in November, and probably a cool million in ps3 hardware. It's the slow period of the year right now for games. Besides Prototype and inFamous, nothing has really come out in the last 4 months.

Aww...why'd you have to bring realistic facts into this argument? It's only going to buzzkill all the people who'll blame the Wii for destroying the industry. Surely we wouldn't want to do that, right?

...wait, no never mind. People on these forums will blame the Wii for anything anyway. Go right ahead.
Heh, seriously. How dare I not have tunnel vision and look at anything other than teh WII SUX! Stupid facts, who needs those on the internet.
Amen, let's get this party started!

Not only is the Wii responsible for the drop in game sales, Nintendo is also committing mass genocide on Japan's corgi population!
REALLY?!!!

MY GOD! WE MUST STOP THESE MONSTERS!... wait, you're not being serious are you... damn it.

As for games, it does feel like every year the amount of quality (must have) games does indead go down.
Not really, 2007 was a great year for gaming. It's just that 2008 and 9 paled in comparison.

Actually, 2008 was pretty good as well.

EDIT: 2005 was a great year too.

Pretty sure it's everything, to an extent. The Wii has been slowing down the most, but that's mainly because it's the giant in the industry (and has been for a while).

Japanese sales have been going down for a long time.

Why do you think Nintendo put so much effort into an 'alternate' strategy? It's because the existing market in Japan was falling apart already.

2009 looks really good too.

But really, 2010 appears one of the best on record, if you have the right platforms.
And if the economy doesn't die again.

I blame the Wii for the current economic crisis. Everyone bought one, then stopped working and so couldn't pay their bills.

On a more serious note, I'd think this was a "duh" moment, here, considering the economy. And the general trend is when things are bad in the US, things are awful most everywhere else.
Sucks for fans of JRPGs, like me, though...I get me the feeling we may not be seeing much coming anytime soon, if this trend keeps up.

I'd put more hope into Dragon Quest 9. It's coming on the 11th and Famitsu claims it's the most anticipated game in Japan.

Sales are down 25-35% in most all retail items from what I have seen. Video games may have seemed bullet proof, but when people are worried about eating and having a roof over their heads all discretionary income items are going to take a back seat.

And it's a world economy now, so a decrease in sales overseas comes back around to affect overall sales. I think it will recover faster than other markets but this news isn't surprising.

Street Fighter 4? That should be a huge hit in Japan, right?

Besides we have seen some other rather good titles come our way like Killzone 2 (which obviously wouldn't do well there) and BazzBlue, Resident Evil 5 etc, etc.
