No, if censorship is bad, then censorship is bad. You can't make exceptions to absolute morals.

Something should only be censored if it genuinely causes (or has high potential to cause) actual harm to somebody else.
I'm glad you admit you were wrong, but you are also wrong about libel and slander. You know why we censor those things? Because they do cause harm. If you defame someone's character or lie in writing about their actions, beliefs, personality, etc., etc., you damage their ability to do things like find someone who will hire them to work, and, in certain situations, lying can cause the target a great deal of legal and finical trouble.

So, by your words, seeing as those things do cause harm, they should be censored--and they are indeed censored and against the law.

In short: we censor a lot of things. Don't knee-jerk into a reply with absolute statements and then retract them.
Hmm... you know, I hadn't considered it like that. Alright, fine, you win.

Can't argue with culture I guess. I guess its in the same way that I wouldn't want a skin head working for me either. That the nazi kind of skin head of course, not people who are just bald through genetics.
Completely off topic, being a non-American, I only found out what "Skin Heads" were recently. Saw it on Louie Theroux's Weird Weekends and by God, I felt sick just listening to them.
I thought "Holy shit, people like this seriously still exist in the same world that I live in." It's not hard to believe that some people would be so biased against tattoos after that.

You're thinking of Ishihara who, quite ironically, used to write softcore porn novels. Though Hasimoto has called for censorship of certain extreme genres of manga, and he has said that he thinks there should be limits on creative freedom and that Japan "needs a dictatorship."
Yes Hashimoto, because all dictatorships go really well...

OT: I'm sure there has to be a type of tattoo that's acceptable. If I saw somebody with the word "Love" or a small bunny inked on the back of somebody's shoulder, my first thought wouldn't be "Crap, they must be with some crime family and want to steal my kidneys!". It's absurd to place a stigma on tattooing itself. Of course getting "Thug Life" printed across your chest is going to get you some weird looks and questions about your lifestyle but that's one design compared to many more that are just art on skin.

Good thing I have no business/political plans for Japan. The Zapdos tattoo I want to get would apparently label me as an undesirable.
Where would you get it. (IF I ever got a pokemon tattoo, it'd be Empoleon on my back)

OT: Why the hell did he pick Johnny Depp? At all? He's a great actor.

Its like the Governer of Georgia saying he doesn't want Tom Cruise filing his taxes because he runs too much. Though that would give me some laughs.

Another point to be noted in this is that having tattoos tends to cause problems with the general public here in Japan, or at least with the older section of it. (This older section is massive and very powerful in graying Japan.) This often leads to "regular" people refusing to do business in any way with those wearing tattoos. This is why bathhouses and such refuse to allow tattooed customers. It may well be discrimination, but it puts the business owner in an invidious position. If he allows the tattooed customers, then he loses some, or even in some cases, all of his other customers. He will be ostracized, his business will fail, and his family will lose their income. This is especially true in smaller towns and cities. It's a no-win scenario for the business owner.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, only that it's more complicated than it at first appears. Japanese culture is simply different from Western culture, and to judge it by purely Western standards is just not going to work. I've been living here in Japan - in the Osaka area, as it happens - for years, so I've been able to observe the culture first-hand. I readily admit I sometimes find Japanese thought or behavior puzzling, but it is their culture, not mine. I have little right to judge.

On a side note, Hashimoto is quite different from the typical Japanese politician. He actually has ideas and goals, and he is very active in trying to accomplish them rather than simply giving them lip service and wringing his hands as most Japanese politicians do. You may not like his ideas, or at least not all of them, but you have to give him credit for actually trying to do something.

TL;DR - It's a different culture and things aren't as clear-cut as they appear.

I got my first tattoo as my birthday present on my 18th birthday.
From my mom.
She got a tattoo at the same time too.
And before you ask, no, they don't match.

I'd probably get it on my left arm or shoulder. I'm not set on a location yet.

As soon as lolicon comes into it, I lose all my sympathy. I'm not going to fight any law that wants to see that crap flushed out from the world. Yeah, yeah, censorship is horrible. Call me when they want to censor something that isn't a child porn surrogate.
Won't someone PLEASE think about the nonexistant children!
I don't care about the nonexistent kids, lol. I just don't care if someone wants to take that crap away from paedophiles. No great loss there.

I guess there goes my dream of teaching english in Japan ... :'(
But it only applies to that one city! You can teach in other places, or teach at a private school! :D

OT: I think we should note that "far-right" in Japan is very different from being far right in places like the US.

Japans traditions and world view are VERY different. For example, somebody on the right in the US is generally going to be supporter of the right to bear arms because of the long tradition of normal citizen having guns and standing up to government, while a person in the right in Japan will be for the banning of guns, since Japans history has weapons being exclusively in the hands of the elite classes.

It must have been her way of hinting that you are set to inherit the family business. Which you might not even know about. Yet.

But if you take the fake children away from pedophiles, they might end up going after the real children.
You're gonna have to do a lot better than conjecture, sorry.
