Japanese Newspaper Claims 3G Support for PSP2

The PSP2 might feature the ability for users to download online content even if a Wi-Fi hotspot isn't nearby.

Japanese newspaper Nikkei claims to have knowledge of some new details on Sony's possibly soon to be announced [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106866-Rumor-Sony-Making-PSP2-Announcement-ASAP] PSP2. According to Nikkei, the PSP2 could be the gaming industry's first 3G handheld.

Nikkei says that 3G support will be provided by NTT DoCoMo in Japan, though it doesn't mention what organization might handle the service in other regions. Similar to cellphones, providing 3G support will allow users to download content directly to their PSP2 systems without having to be in range of a Wi-Fi hotspot. This would presumably also include the ability to play games online without Wi-Fi. The only important factor that isn't mentioned is if this 3G service will come with a monthly cost or not.

The PSP and PSPgo can both download content from the internet, but only through a Wi-Fi hotspot. If Nikkei's report is true, it makes sense in tandem with other rumors [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105958-Source-Compares-PSP2-to-Portable-PS3] that say Sony is again skipping the inclusion of any physical media drive for the PSP2. For a physical media-free device to truly hit its stride, users have to be able to download content anywhere, anytime.

Nikkei also mentions another interesting factor of the PSP2: an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen. OLED technology is still relatively new, but known for being able to be placed on flexible screens that don't require a backlight. Further, the paper says that Sony has developed a new type of internal processor to output HD visuals.

These are just another few facts to add to the rumor mill, but could be somewhat more reliable coming from a major business newspaper. Sony is expected to officially reveal the PSP2 at a press conference on January 27, and the handheld is expected [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106904-Rumor-PSP2-Could-Hit-Stores-in-Time-For-Halloween] to be released by the end of 2011.

Drat. If there is no physical media at all...there goes my backwards compatibility. Unless I downloaded the game off of the PSN store.

It's going to have physical media, they've pretty much implied that they will. They're most lily switching over to a flash based media like something similar to the pro duo sticks; more memory, faster, less fragile. The PSPgo was pretty much an expensive litmus test...and it told them that peole still like their physicial media.

As for backwards compatibility with UMDs...well at the very least they could sell some sort of UMD drive add-on.

I hope this 3G support is true IF you don't have to pay some sort of subscription fee for it. If you don't then hell yea!! You can game online anywhere without trying to find a viable wi-fi spot seeing as a lot of places aren't like japan were they have wi-fi EVERYWHERE.

I just hope the battery life is good and all these supposed features don't take too big of a toll on it.

Makes me wonder how many other things are we going to throw 3g into these days..

Toasters? Why the hell not.

Heh. If the 3DS is only 3-5 hours with 3D, volume, and brightness all the way up, the PSP2 will probably have to come with a special hat with solar panels installed to keep the thing from dying in just an hour. :p

Anyway, I hope Sony just comes out with the damn PSP2 and PSPhone already. They should have done it at CES, because this is getting ridiculous. It takes David Jaffe lying to the media to keep anything secret for Sony, so they should just come out and give us the true story already since we know pretty much everything but date and price if all the rumors turn out to be true.

...shouldn't all mobile phones support 3G in this day and age? even my 4-5 year old phone has 3G.

there is no way they can pull off free 3G. Amazon has done it with the kindle but when you have people browsing the internet, downloading games and downloading much larger files when the thing is hacked 5 days after its released. well, thats a bill sony wont want to pay.

I thought this was assumed, it's a modern day smartphone, to not have 3g support would be suicide.

My droid smartphone has 3g, it's fast too, so why is this impossible? If it came equipped with the 3g speeds my Droid Incredible has, it would be more than enough. My Droid lets me download a file of any size I want, and it can handle it just fine.

Remember, Sony is MAKING the phone, they aren't the SERVICE PROVIDER, they aren't going to be building cell towers for these things.

It's just downloading content

I don't think it's a given that its battery will suck, I think the 3DS just has a shitty battery or something.

I would guess it will work for maybe 6 hours of gaming.

Yeah, but this isn't a phone, it's a handheld game system, so putting 3G on it would mean they would have to charge some kinda fee to keep it running. Considering how strong this thing is gonna be, on top of a 3G network I'd hate to see the battery life on it unless they can rly pull something out their ass.

I was talking about the psp2 not the phone.

Because they aren't talking about a phone, they're talking about a handheld game system. Having 3G on a phone is fine since your paying monthy to cover it, but on a handheld someone is gonna have to front the money for it, and as stated, that isn't a bill that sony is gonna want.

from what i've read, wi-fi is free for the psp2, but the 3g support for it will probably be an extra fee from whatever provider supports it. so wifi at the wifi hotspots, but if you pay 3g support, i'm assuming that you have access outside of wifi zones. so dl-ing stuff from anywhere with 3g support. sounds good if you like your content right away.

If this is true, then I'm very confused as to why Sony is releasing two different 3G devices, unless they have some sort of parallel existence, like the PSP-3000 and the PSP Go.

Sony can't pull off free 3G(outside of possibly parts of Japan and South Korea). It's not possible. Anyone who thinks they can is setting themselves up for disappointment.

As for the battery life, it might actually be higher than the 3DS, because OLED is very energy efficient. Most of the battery draining will be from searching for networks, or running programs, not form the OLED display. In a standalone test, with all network settings disabled, you could probably get a PSP2 to last for well over 10 hours. Of course, if you add in anything like a constant WiFi search, or 3G, then you might as well kiss the batteries goodbye.

Meh, most definitely a monthly bill for 3G. I've heard just pure negatives about the newer PSPs, I used to have one when it came out and it was pretty terrible. I've also heard the device that allows wifi is very old(on the PSPgo,-3000, etc.) Sony just can't compete anymore.

I have a feeling it will be one of those things that works extremely well in Japan and possibly south korea if sony feel nice, but everywhere else will probably have terrible connection and confusing payment options.
