So they get on the devs about Neir being to "girly" but forgot about the trap? Priorities much? The problem I have with western heroes is that they are muscled to the point of looking like complete morons. Kratos is great because he is muscled without looking ridiculous like Major Penis, errrr, Marcus Fenix, who really is just the sexual fantasy of a closet gay man as far as I am concerned.

Rather than mere homophobia I think that there is alot of closet homosexuality involved with all the raging against "girly men" or gays. These guys have to compensate by making the men as "manly" as possible.

Thank god they cut him out of the game. Who on earth would want to play yet another stereotypical androgynous JRPG protagonist?

The American one looks fucking stupid, I'd rather play as the younger one any day, at least he looks kind of cool

I like the older guy design and story idea. Paternal love > fraternal love, in my opinion, at least when it comes to writing stories. It's more compelling.

I think everyone here is having a different argument though. Some people are going on about Japanese vs. American culture, others are making it into a homosexuality issue, others are just jaded by one side or the other (usually getting on Marcus Fenix's case, poor guy). If we're talking about game/story design and appeal, the key is VARIETY. It's important for designers to know the work that's already out there and to endeavor to create something unique. For the game's sake, I just hope there's something unique about it besides the character. If it's just typical JRPG cliches, then the game has worse problems than its character design.

The reality is that a lot of JRPGs have effeminate or androgynous characters. If the designers were hoping to create a refreshingly unique main character, then the older version is infinitely more successful. If not, then no problem either way. Some games are just meant to be a fun diversion, a studio collecting a paycheck, same thing with movies sometimes.

Even so, this is the Internet. Put a choice online with a comments section under it and you're bound to get criticism from both sides...

Neither of them could swing that darn sword. It's a game, but I wouldnt have cared either way, it's gameplay that matters to me.

I do not like the effeminate male Japanese character design... and definately the clothing designs. Thats not to say I have a problem with girly characters Leonardo de Vinci was my favorate character in Assassin's Creed 2 and he practicly sneezed glitter.

I'd honestly take the skinny one because he does look cooler. This is what would happen to FF7 if they followed that formula.

Manly cloud according to YOU guys [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/116556/2953_Manly_Cloud.jpg]

Manly version of Cloud according to Japan. [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/116556/Cloud_Strife_art.jpg]

Still I don't have the game but I don't want Japan to make ugly lead characters just because some people who hate jRPG who never plays them should have a say in it. Seriously, most of the haters probably didn't play the game so all you guys do are ruining it for those who MIGHT want the skinny type.

The old guy just looks creepy too, way too creepy. Specially when he hangs around with that skinny girl running around in like lingering only. That is just plain wrong. Well the girl character is just plain wrong anyway as it was only used as sex object.

Uh.....huh.
Wait, I don't get it.
What's wrong with having a little girly main character?(Besides making the whole fathr daughter thing more awkward)
I mean, my favorite game has a little girly main character, and it had no problem being a hit in north America and Europe.

Whoa! Who drew that picture? Cloud actually looks very cool in it, especially holding Seph's severed head like that. Looks like a Viking, really. He could stand to lose the heart tattoo, though.

Beauty and ugliness are, of course, in the eye of the beholder. I don't think the international protagonist looks creepy or ugly, and a young kid running around with a girl in lingérie, as you put it, would be equally creepy. We're not here to criticise the characters' taste in clothes, though; that would be the subject of another thread.

That being said, I don't have any problems with the bishounen version, either, but being able to play an older character or a girl is cool.

Whoa, lots of homophobia in this thread.

Honestly, looking at the Japanese version of the character, he isn't really that much of a bishie. Hell, some of my manliest characters look girlier than he does. At least he's wearing a shirt, as opposed to his older - and I use the term loosely - counterpart, who's fat and ugly.
Seriously. Look at the man.
Ew.
I'm supposed to relate to this flab cake?
No.
Personally, I'd much rather play as the original character. At least he looks human.
Although, what do I know, I'm Canadian, not some yank.

Those of you calling the devs on bawwing over not getting to use their character, you obviously have never written anything before. They had a character that they could use, but then some bigwig comes in and tells them, "No, you have to make him old and ugly and completely different." Their project was taken away from them and had to be completely redone to fit in the change to the protagonist. That's not how writing works, and because you people keep bawing over how Japanese culture is "OMG DIFFERENT FROM OURS LAWL GAY", this is what you get.
You reap what you sow, now quit whining.

And while we on the subject, I couldn't help but make an obvious observation that Japanese culture is seriously lacking mature leads. Even the seinen genre (which is sort of like "for mature male audience") is plagued by leads aged 20 and below.
Well, that's just the culture. Japan as a whole expects their leads to be younger men - they just won't accept a lead that's anything else. It's not really homosexuality vs heterosexuality (and anyone who makes it to be so is close minded and ignorant), but just... a difference of culture.
It's like saying, "wow, the French sure do enjoy their French stuff!" Of course they do.

Hmm. Reminds me of how they added more blood to No More Heroes for the US release. Says a lot about Japan's opinion of us, huh? (Then again, so does every allegedly American character in anime. Bandit Keith, anyone?)

"'But if we don't make a girly version we'll lose heart and it'll take even longer', he explained."

...um.. Does anyone else feel weird about this comment that producer/developer made?.. I guess it explains all their Rape-Play video games......maybe...

So in the world of gaming today I can either play as a gritty ugly behemoth of a man drowning in violence and misery, or I could play as a bitter androgynous teenager. Is it too much to ask for some kind of third option?
I couldn't agree with you more, whats with all these angsty, unhappy protagonists these days? Sure they don't have to be happy but it does start to wear on me when I play a huge variety of games and all the main characters are either overly cynical or have 'why me' syndrome.

Personally I prefer to play a character who is at least slightly good looking so I suppose I'd prefer an androgynous guy. They could make your average 30 year old character with no over the top features and build a character around thet. However gameplay and story are more important to me generally.

How about a baby. Not enough games let you be a kickass baby.
Now THAT'S a good idea right there. Also, are there any games in which you can take the role of some 100 year old, alzheimer suffering granny/granpa kicking ass?

No, but they came close to it with The End in Metal Gear Solid 3.
