I didn't think this was still news.

Alright! So, now we've got holograms down, lets get on with Teleporters and Matter Materializers!
Relax, I'm pretty sure it's not a real hologram. It looks like a 2D image projected on a semi-transparent screen.
That's correct. The footage being projected was also a high-def "teaser" for Project DIVA 2nd, a PSP rhythm game.
Here's some footage, using the first bi-lingual Vocaloid, 03 Megurine Luka

I also think a lot of people are missing the point of the Vocaloid characters. They aren't meant for the "zomg little girl is so hawt" effect, as most people seem to be thinking. They're a marketing tool- just a face to go with the voice.

Agreed.

Is it me or is her voice strange, especially when she sings fast? or is that just japanese?

It isn't you. Since every syllable she sings was sampled from a singer, but the software allows the sound bytes to be extended or shortened, they can speak clearly at virtually any speed and still be (sort of) clear.
The Vocaloid also software has a lot of effects for altering pitch and tone, has a music editing suite, and support for more than one singer. In that one, Luka is doing the main lyrics, the backup vocals, and has a digital filter on it to make her voice sound double-recorded. Dunno why, I didn't write the song.

Speaking of singing (sort of) clearly at virtually any speed, I'll give you a million dollars if you can sing this accurately;
Also why I like the Vocaloids. Almost every song and videoclip is entirely fan-made. Which is also why you get some really horrible-sounding songs where they sing off-key.

I was more entertained by the guitarist tbh, we have enough fake talent in the industry now we have the REAL DEAL of fakes.
Forgive me for being cynical but the hologram got a bit boring after I saw it from a few angles.

Between dating sims, dancing female robots, and holographic pop stars, the average Japanese woman is going to have an even harder time trying to find love. Japan seems pretty dedicated to replacing woman with electronic devices.
Send em to America :D!!!

Shoot Organic tops electronic anyday!!

"She" is not an artist, she is IT!
It is not a real artist, behind the music and the animation there is some person who gets paid from what he does and can be considered to be the real artist.
That is nice piece of technology, but it is still electronic device.
But, that hologram is not the artist, the person who composed the music is. The people who are playing on the stage are more of an artist then IT is.

And this is kinda rude to real women in my opinion. This kind of events alienate real women from music industry and makes the image of women to be under-aged teen who's a sexual object.

Does it say too much about me that I was surprised to see those glowsticks?

Well not suprised to see them, but to see things like that in a japanese online video unpixellated...

I'll get my coat.

Does it matter if life imitates art? of course not, but . . . doesn't anyone know the Gibson novels. Skipping over the Neuromancer trilogy to the series set in Japan, the Idoru novels about a girl singer in a bubble memory so vast she presents as a hologram.

Of course it doesn't matter, but it is interesting. And if someone wanted a black vinyl kind of experience (that would be dabbling in obsolete media)read Neuromancer, the book!

Am I the only one more interested in how the hologram tech works than how weird it is that Japan has holographic pop stars?
I'm with you on that one. If this works, then does that mean we can get REAL 3d movies soon?
