Spot on. Art has no rules, and if BioWare actually liked their ending, they should have the balls to stand by it. Caving so quickly sends the message that they either don't like the ending either (perhaps those rumors about two of the team writing the ending and not allowing others to give feedback on it were true?) or just see an opportunity to cash in on some DLC.
Plus, I once again point at Fallout 3's shitty ending and Broken Steel coming along to fix it. Where were all those pious journalists writing their stupid articles about threatening artistic integrity then? This whole ME3 situation does just seem like they're taking a chance to shit on a bunch of fans without actually doing the research. It sure was decent of Jim to actually look into the whole thing and change his initial thought once he saw that this isn't the same kind of "boycott L4D2 because it's coming out too soon after L4D1", "boycott SEGA because Sonic's eyes are green", and "boycott MW2 because no dedicated servers oops we all bought it anyway" bullshit that's made movements like this look stupid in the past.
As far as ME3's ending goes, I'm still not sure if I want it changed or not. Yeah, it sucked. More explanation would be nice. I'm certainly not looking for a "happy" ending like so many condescending journalists write in their articles. But what I find most interesting about all this is what BioWare is going to do with this ending without upsetting people even more and starting some kind of "retake the retaken Mass Effect 3 ending" thing from people who don't agree with the changes. BioWare's in a tough spot, they're probably going to piss people off no matter what they do now. Should be interesting to see what they do, if nothing else.

It's actually pretty fucking refreshing for Jim to admit that his initial impressions about the people wanting the ending changed were wrong and that he can even see where they're coming from once he'd LOOKED INTO IT A BIT MORE*
Fair play to you Mr. Sterling.
*Caps'd and bolded on the off chance that Moviebob comes into the thread and gets a clue about the proper attitude to have towards something like this.
Yeah, right. Personally, I gave up on anything intelligent coming from MovieBob after this fiasco [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extraconsideration/8688-Controller-Evolution]. Specifically, the part where he says:
Even the tutorial mode of most "hardcore" games assumes one is already familiar with the last few years of whatever the genre is, and God forbid the Tutorial isn't 100% skippable or "hardcore" gamers are garaunteed to pitch a fit about it - as though it's inconcievable that people without their specific prior experience might want to play, too.
Because asking to be able to SKIP a tutorial is the same thing as saying that their should be NO tutorial and fuck all newcomers, right? Having a tutorial be SKIPPABLE is not the same thing as having NO TUTORIAL. Skippable means if you don't need it, you can skip it, but if you do need it, it's there for you. That's the way it should be, because everybody wins. But that fool takes up this condescending tone acting like it's some great injustice to want to be able to skip a tutorial in a game you already know how to play.
So yeah, if I was you, I wouldn't hold your breath on MovieBob getting that clue.

Shit, and I thought I was cynical. Considering the sad state of affairs among the big publishers these days, this scenario does have an air of plausibility about it (well, for me at least). I have read that ME3's ending could be simply the result of [a href=http://www.oxm.co.uk/39736/revealed-the-mass-effect-3-ending-bioware-canned-before-release/]the writer leaving the project halfway through.[/a] Which is kind of a big deal. And it rather nicely explains how ME3 went completely off-the-rails in terms of narrative. A new ending may improve things, but it probably won't come close to "fixing" the game. You'd need a Director's Cut for that (pre-order now, and get some more cheap plastic crap!).
...If that's true, why the hell did they change that? That ending sounds a lot better than what we got. Still has plenty of desperation in there. Not a boring "everything is sunshine and rainbows" ending that uninformed journalists say people want. And it doesn't boil down to the completely nonsensical explanation of:
