JK Rowling Teases a Major "Potter" Announcement

In less than a week, we'll know what JK Rowling's "Pottermore" is. Place your bets now.

There are few media properties in the world - perhaps in all of history - with the sheer clout of JK Rowling's Harry Potter series. With Harry Potter, not only do you have the best-selling books, but you have the videogames (some better than others) and the massively popular film series. Hell, you even have an amusement park. But the final film in the franchise is coming this July, and with that, the Harry Potter series is over.

Or, maybe not. There's a mysterious countdown on YouTube [http://www.youtube.com/JKRowlingAnnounces] with the URL "JKRowlingAnnounces." As you might expect, it's a clock that's ticking down "until J.K. Rowling's announcement," and at time of writing it had 6 days, 9 hours, and 57 minutes to go. The site shows a cloudy sky in front of many, many owls, which might lead some to suggest that this announcement has something to do with the Boy Who Lived.

Those people, of course, would be absolutely right. The site in question is "Pottermore [http://www.pottermore.com/]," and just in case the title, URL, and white owls on the screen didn't clue you in, there's a copyright note at the bottom that reads: "Harry Potter and Pottermore Publishing Rights © J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter characters, names and related indicia are trademarks of and © Warners Bros. Ent. All Rights Reserved."

Okay, so Pottermore is more Potter. That's pretty straightforward to me, right? Maybe it's a new book series, maybe it's a new movie series; it could be anything. But the trademark in question [http://www.trademarkia.com/pottermore-77788415.html] tells a different story, reading almost like it could be a Harry Potter-themed social network. To quote:

[blockquote]Providing multiple-user access to a global computer information network; providing on-line chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among users in the field of general interest; providing on-line communications links which transfer the web site user to other local and global web pages; providing on-line facilities for real-time interaction with other computer users concerning topics of general interest[/blockquote]

That just sounds like a big Potter website or network, to me. Maybe it's an MMO.

I guess we'll find out in just under a week. Your thoughts, ladies and gentlemen?

Panic over, my mistake!
I dunno. 2 on the GBColor was really good. And 5 wasn't bad. Let you explore Hogwarts, which was very cool.

Most of them do suck, though.

You know, I love Harry Potter as much as the next guy and then some, but really? This doesn't interest me at all, whetever it is.

7 books and almost 8 movies on... I honestly think HP has run it's course now. I'd be more interested to see a new IP from JK, preferrably in book form.

Eh... *suspicion meter rises* Can't they give the franchise a rest for at least a coupla years? I already have the last book, the last movie, and the theme park on my to-do list.

Ninja'd.

The Harry Potter video games are kind of. . . bad. I don't think we need an entire mumuorpuger styled around it.

Well, it's unlikely to be a new book series, and I highly doubt they'd just make new movies. Therefore, it's nothing of consequence. (I'll still be checking it out though)

My thoughts are that Harry Potter can fuck off and die.

It's been milked enough with the books, movies and video games (not to mention the theme park).

Trying to guess the nature of her announcement requires a mystery. There is no mystery here. The announcement, regardless of details, will read as such:

"I've decided to print more money - sincerely, Jo"

Damn. I was hoping it would be new books.

I'm still hoping someday she'll write a book about the first time Voldemort came along and fucked things up with Harry's parents and Serious and all those older characters as the main protagonists with the same darkish tone of books the sixth and seventh. That would be incredibly bad ass.

Maybe paramore's going to redo an album of one of the harry potter movies, or have part in the second part of the Seventh movie?

Or maybe she's just going to link up with Stephenie Myers and makea Twilight/Harry Potter book/(would become) movie series to unleash on the world and makes more loads of money between the two. if thats the case, Lupin is about to get a whole lot less awesome.

I've always felt hopelessly out of the loop with Harry Potter. The first book came out when I was released over here when I was 10 and I loved everything about it! I should have been part of that generation of geeks that grew up with those books and movies, making it the essential work of fiction of their childhood and teenage years. But somehow I lost interest around the fourth book, and never bothered to pick it up after that. Every time I hear about it it's like "damn, this sounds like something I would love", and then I remember that I don't and it makes me sad :(

I've been looking forward to the definitive end of the books and movies so that I can finally (at least to an extent) put this behind me, but now you're telling me there's more? Will this nightmare ever end?! :O

They're a good case study of how graphics have improved from 2001 till now and beyond.

Sounds like a website to me. Also sounds like she's pissed all her money up the wall
