I do have a PSP, but never bothered to get P3P. I knew it improved some areas, but if I was going to buy the game again I'd try and track down FES so I could get the additional story content, more battle control as well as still get the anime cutscenes.Et3rnalLegend64 said:Or you could play Persona 3 Portable. P3 with P4's battle system, option to play as a girl, P4 and Catherine references, new Personas, and some Social Link updates. Downsides are that cutscenes are done in-engine instead of animated, there's no FES story, and you have to buy a PSP if you don't have one already. But yeah, go do that. And play Persona 4 anyway. Or wait for P4's re-release for PSP too.
One of my favorite games when I was about 12.Shoggoth2588 said:As much as I hated Final Fantasy XIII I loved the way it looked. I got really hooked on Dragon Quest VIII recently for the PS2. It's played on an open world so linearity is minimal. The overall design is great too, even if you're not a fan of Akira Toriyama's style the settings are all vibrant and extremely colorful. The battle system is bare bone though. It's like playing a turn-based RPG on the NES (except for the battle animations). The characters are great though! There's a lot of humor in just about everyone's lines (except for the un-named player character who doesn't speak) and, even some of the boss monsters are characters who I'd love to see again if not in a future installment than in some other media (Khalimari being the best example)
Not perfect but still worth looking up if you still use your PS2

Xenoblade Chronicles.
Now, I'm not the biggest JRPG fan, FF13 was an abomination, but Xenoblade Chronicles has restored my faith in the genre.
Americans are in for a treat when this game arrives on their shores.

Maybe it was just me but i found the characters a little flat, gameplay uninspired and just, i've seen this game before. It also felt really dumbed down as i never really broke a sweat in battle ever, even the final boss was easy.
OP: The games that did it the best to me are pretty much Japanese only or The ports had issues.
Spectral Force 1 and 2 For the playstation Import only.
Spectral Souls 1 and 2 Ps2 import only (think 2 had a psp port)
Blazing Souls Ps2 import, think theres a PSP Localization as well.
Record of agarest war, that does have a good localization.
I guess as you can see all these games are made by idea factory, The best JRPG developer ever. There games are genius and actually challenging unlike most rubbish these days.
Something about the combat animations and the fact that you can (theoretically) max out your level no matter where you are in the game made the fights easier to bare. Also, the fights were pretty quick compared to other JRPGs: no cool-down bars just picking your attack and, target 2 - 4 times and waiting for the animations to pass by. Gotta love those simple pleasures.SebbyGVS said:One of my favorite games when I was about 12.Shoggoth2588 said:-snip-SebbyGVS said:Final Fantasy XIII, questionable plot, Vanille, completely linear in first half. Back then i'm pretty sure I grinded for 10 hours straight just so i could wipe the floor with the next boss. Honestly don't know how I did it seeing as as you said the combat was about as basic as it gets.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but FES does not have party control, it's still all AI controlled.Vivi22 said:I do have a PSP, but never bothered to get P3P. I do want to track down a copy of Persona 4, in part because the re-release is going to be for the Vita, not the PSP, and given it's the only game I want for it, I might as well save some money and just buy the original if I can.
Tales of Vesperia... check!SebbyGVS said:Lost Odyssey had great characters, and a great plot, yet the game is very linear up until just before the final area, and the combat is fairly standard.
Eternal Sonata had a nice battle system, and a good plot, but the characters made me want to punch them in the face, it was all so goddamn cheesy.(My opinion) It was also quite linear.
Resonance of Fate, deep battle system although I would have liked to see it evolve over the course of the game. Great customization, and I liked the characters. While I respect how the story was presented, it still didn't appeal much to me.
Tales of Vesperia, probably my favourite JRPG, while some characters annoyed me.(Estelle, Karol) Yuri more than made up for it. I loved the battle system and it was open world (which I think is a must)
I agree with the Squaresoft statement, with Chrono Cross as the exception. I thought that game was terrible. It does have one of the best soundtracks in video game history though.Luxatrum said:People have mentioned Chrono Trigger, and I'd like to add Chrono Cross. Just got the old port off the psn today and have only put it down long enough to eat and take an internet break.
You know actually damn near anything that is square soft but not square enix is a good jrpg.
I actually think that Dawn of the New World wasn't bad, just a crappy sequel with an annoying main character. If anything, I recommend playing it first, then playing the original so you don't get that disappointment of how bad a sequel it was in terms of story. It wasn't great, but it had great gameplay, decent story, and okay music.Nayr said:Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Phantasia, Vesperia are all my ideal JRPG. Hmm, not sure where I heard that then. May have confused that fact with P3P somewhere along the way. Still, it's not like it would make or break the decision to buy it when the extra content is the more interesting part for me. More control in battle would be nice, but not a deal breaker when you consider how good P3 was without it.Il_Exile_lI said:Sorry to burst your bubble, but FES does not have party control, it's still all AI controlled.
Actually I would have to agree with you on a lot of that. I really enjoyed the combat, even a bit more then in the first one. I just could not stand Emil, and that the other characters like Lloyd were maxed at level 50, even if Emil was 200. The use of monsters in combat, I did not care for either. But the game play was solid, if only I could roam the map once more.DeltaEdge said:I actually think that Dawn of the New World wasn't bad, just a crappy sequel with an annoying main character. Oh, I agree, and to me that's the beauty of RPGs. I've played the Final Fantasy series more than any other, so they're what I'm familiar with most I suppose. Whilst they're certainly not as open world as Skyrim, I've never really thought "this is a linear game" while I was playing until XIII; and even then it didn't really bother me much. But then I'm also one of the few people who didn't want to strangle Vanille or Hope, so maybe I'm getting easy-going in my old age.j-e-f-f-e-r-s said:The only reason people assume that JRPGs are all linear corridor fests is because of Final Fantasy (despite the fact that the worlds of Final Fantasy have traditionally been quite open in themselves). I know what you mean when you say JRPGs tend to be more story-focused than the likes of Skyrim, but I still feel a little sad when even fans of the genre seem to admit that JRPGs are inherently more linear than their western counterparts. After all, it's not as if every WRPG offers the same amount of choice as Skyrim or Mass Effect. If we're going to hold the standards of WRPGs to those games, then we should hold the standards of JRPGs to equivalent games. There's a world of difference, after all, between FFXIII and Xenoblade Chronicles.
