Want to talk just about video games?

That's great! I want to hear it.

I created this topic because I just got past a difficult part on a game and I wanted to post about it, but couldn't really find somewhere appropriate, so here it is- these are the things I want to know.

1.What was the last game you played? How are you finding it?

2.What is the last thing in a game you had difficulty with and overcame?

3.What games are you looking forward to?

1. Legend of Grimrock. I bought it yesterday, and it's kinda kicking my butt. I've got two fighters a rogue and a mage and I'm thinking I should have gone with two mages but I kinda don't want to start again. Plus I'm playing on easy, I'm so weak, don't judge me.

2. The reason I made this thread- I beat the third boss on Rogue Legacy after dying on it way, way too many times. I have no idea how I'm going to beat the secret bosses.

3. Final Fantasy X/X2 rerelease on the PS4 which just got a release date of May 15th. I never finished those games and I really really wanted to, so hopefully this time I'll manage it.

So, tell me how your gaming life has been going recently.

Yah! Video games!

1. I am playing two games (generally I will play one "story" game and one other game). Right now those are "Wolf Among Us" and "NHL 15". Wolf is normal Telltale awesome and I am greatly enjoying it (I am on Episode 4 so I'll have to decide what my next game will be soon) and NHL 15 is a fun hockey game. I haven't owned a hockey game since the Genesis but I've always really enjoyed them.

2. Wolf isn't exactly difficult but I am doing something I vowed I would never do in a sports game ever again...I'm playing goalie. I was hoping that it would be easier in NHL than FIFA but it's not. I am very very very slowly getting the hang of it (or at least I think I am until they light my ass up for six goals...) but holy hell playing goalie in this game is wicked difficult. Honestly...I'm not sure how a human could possibly play goalie better than the computer but I'm hoping to prove myself wrong as I play and get better.

3. I have become a hermit gamer where I buy all the latest and greatest video games!...if it was 2013/2014. Right now, I have Watch_Dogs (slightly optimistic), Wolfenstein New Order (very optimistic), Portal 2 (optimistic), Ni-No-Kuni (slightly optimistic), and Beyond Two Souls (optimistic) to play through. Or I could always go onto my 360 and the cheap digital buys like Batman Arkham City or Far Cry Blood Dragon...

I still have time to decide which to go with next; do I go with the game I'm most excited for (Wolfenstein) or the game I'm least excited for (Sorry Portal 2; it's not you, it's that you're a lot older and I don't have anyone to co-op with) or just grab a game and go? So many options!

1. Black Flag. I bought it a long time ago, and I stopped playing it when I got super busy. I'm just now getting back into it and I'm having a blast sailing around with my mates and taking shit. I'm told there is a story, but I think those people are pulling my leg. I mean, the whole point of the game is just sailing around a taking ports, right? Speaking of ports, some of them are super hard, but so rewarding when it's taken.

2. It was actually a port that I was trying to take in Black Flag. I don't know why, but it was positioned in such a way that if I went too far away I'd attract the attention of enemy boats, but if I was too close I'd get fucked by the terrain. I didn't pick wisely when upgrading my ship. Anyways, after numerous attempts at destroying the fort and the little ships that kept coming at me, I finally was able to raid the place and take it. It was super epic and I felt like a badass after I claimed it. :D

3. Bloodborne is one of the games that I'm looking forward to playing soon. It looks like a blast to play and I really want to explore the game to see what I can find. The atmosphere and environment of the game looks amazing. I'm also looking forward to playing Borderlands: The Handsome Collection. I'm hoping to find some people to play along with me on PS4, and I think one of the people in a user group I'm in wants to play along. Also, Final Fantasy XIV since I picked it up on sale on the PS store, and I've been meaning to find the time to play it since I've been hearing a lot of good thing about it since its re-launch.

1. I've been on a Warriors binge lately. I've beat Dynasty Warriors 8 last weekend. I'm going to beat Samurai Warriors 4's story tonight and start the Chronicle mode. Which lets you run about Feudal Japan as a nameless wanderer, trying to create a book of the times. So far, Samurai Warriors 4 is probably the second best Warriors game I've had played. Each character feels unique and has their own weapon. Another case for quality beats quantity in the Warriors series.

2. Dark Souls and the fucking Taurus Demon. Seriously, fuck this asshole. No room to gallivant about, insane lock on attacks, and the fact your character is breaking slow records at how fast they can climb a ladder when a fucking monstrous demon is trying to rip your balls off and feed him to his family.

3. Well... every time a piece of news about Pirate Warriors 3 comes out I let out a little squeal. Chances are I already know the last two characters to be announced as playable, but everytime I get it confirmed, it's just an amazing feeling.... but there is one issue. They have chosen some really fucking stupid characters to pick and make playable. Tagashi? Seriously? She's a haki using swordwoman[footnote]Don't get my wrong, Tagashi is cool, but I much rather they pick someone with more unique powers. I really don't want Zoro .5[/footnote]. How about we get another devil fruit user... you know. Like everybody's favorite character from Dresserosa.

And don't even get me started on the supposed final character to be announced. He's appeared in about ten episodes, not including flashbacks. We don't need him yet! Pick someone more needed for the current arc damnit! Like you know...Bartolomeo.

Working through my massive backlog since Winter is nearly over and I have made a resolution to be more outdoorsy and social once the weather clears.

RTS's are almost done, just need to finish Dawn of War 2: Retribution.

Next up: shooters!

Oh, and for OP:

1) Dawn of War 2 and expansions. Not especially recommended to anyone that isn't a hardcore fan of WH40k.

2) Finding the interest to keep playing DOW2: Chaos Rising.

3) Arkham Knight. I enjoyed all the Arkham games thus far (even Origins, once the Joker got involved) and hopefully this will be a return to form. Also: BATMOBILE!

1. Mass Effect 2. Probably my third or fourth play through. I wanna romance all my favorites. Already done Tali, Kaidan, Jack and now I'm working on Liara. Truly I love these games and the characters. I consider them the staple, the bar by which other characters are judged. Sorry Last of Us, Ellie is nothing compared to Tali. Maybe that's unfair as there were three games in the Mass Effect series, but I can't imagine caring about or being as invested in another cast of characters like I am with the Mass Effect crew.
Even the bullshit ones, like Jacob James Vega have way more character than 90%+ of all other games.

2. During Garrus' recruitment mission you have to seal these three basement doors to keep the Blood Pack from invading. Most of it is piss easy, but I had assigned one of my squad to stay with Garrus. And this one room is a super long hanger with barely any cover, dozens of Vocha and Varren and they have great cover. I probably died 5 or 6 times. But I was eventually able to inferno ammo my way through, but it was harder than I remember. Maybe because I had Zaeed and he didn't have the best equipment.

3. I'm honestly not looking forward to any. I am so jaded and bitter when it comes to hype and promises that I simply can't work up the emotional bandwidth to feel excitement for releases anymore. I can be excited to play a game I know is good, but that's usually not until 6+ months after said game's release, when the bugs have been fixed and the prices(for both the game itself and the lets-not-kid-ourselves-necessary-DLC-to-make-the-game-fun) have gone way down. For example I love Shadow of Mordor, but I'd have never paid for price for it. And I didn't.

1. I think probably Medieval 2 Total War. Still as entertaining as it ever was, the armies of England currently rampaging through central Europe and Spain. I keep wanting to try the Call of Warhammer mod again, but I found the campaign mode to be too restricted to the Storm of Chaos bullshit.

2. Probably Borderlands 2. I didn't realise there was an order to the DLC, Tiny Tina & Sir Hammerlock being much higher level than the first 2. Went back and played the 1st 2, levelled up, finding it much easier going now.

3. Cyberpunk 2077. I played a lot of Cyberpunk 2020 when I was a youngster so I want to see what CDPR do with it, both in terms of how it's set in the Cyberpunk universe (60 years on is long time in an era of rapidly changing technology, yet it looked quite similar to the type of world 2020 had set up, maybe they just rejig the timeline to make it more believable to a modern audience, maybe they...etc) and what the game turns out to be, cause a sort of Fallout3/GTA mix would suit me fine. Mechanically FO3 and CP2020 feel quite similar on the surface,so they could probably get away with something similar, but that kinda makes me thing CDPR might do their own thing for it.

Also Battlefleet Gothic Armada. Please don't suck, please don't suck, please don't suck...

Got a PS3 for birthday, so have been trying to catch up on games that I missed on that console.

1. Tales of Graces f. I really enjoyed Tales of Vesperia on the Xbox 360 so thought I would try other games in the series. I'm just near the end of the game and I think it's alright. I definitely prefer Vesperia, main character in Graces is a bit of a wet fish and the constant speeches about 'Protecting people' and 'Friends being important' really can grate at times. But the combat is really good and there are moments where the characters shine and the whole game comes together really well. On the whole, I don't regret the purchase (particularly because it was £6).

2. Tales of Graces has a habit of putting a sudden difficulty spike right in your path. One boss encounter will be piss easy, then suddenly you'll come across another boss that combos you into oblivion. One particular boss stands out. Some toss-pot called Kurt. He has really quick combo attacks that can kill your characters in a couple of seconds so I ended up wasting all my Life Potions in the first few minutes of the fight. I only won on the 7th+ try by pure luck, doubt I could do it again.

3. Persona 5. I really, really, really loved Persona 3 + 4 so getting this as soon as it comes out is almost a no-brainer.

Also OP; great thread. Need more stuff like this on here.

1&2) I've been playing a racing game called FUEL. I just finished the career races actually, but I still have half the challenges to go, which could take days. I haven't been finding it too difficult, as I have played it before, but there are a few races, especially some challenges, that are really hard. But I've been getting through them.

Before that I was playing Spec Ops: The Line on Suicide difficulty, and finding it surprisingly easy given that it seemed really hard when I played on Combat Op (easier than suicide) about a year ago. I guess it's mostly about figuring out good tactics, and good tactics on Combat Op often work on Suicide. I have not quite finished though.

3) I don't look forward to games, I wait until games are out three years and are 75% off. Not only is it way cheaper, but I also know exactly what I'm buying.

1. I've been playing Resident Evil Revelations 2, and I'm finding it surprisingly okay. It's comparable to Tomb Raider '13 in that it's not that great, but it certainly chugs along well enough.

2. The last thing I had a difficult time with was the final section in Claire's scenario in episode 2. I'm finding Claire's sections in general to be way more challenging than Barry's. To a point where it feels like I'm just not playing the game right or missing some vital strategy. It also doesn't help that something about the aiming just feels a bit unnatural to me. But just like at the end in episode 1 I am just getting my shit pushed mercilessly as Claire.

3. I'm quite looking forward to Bloodborne, and it's only 18 days away. Finally I can get some action out of my PS4 again -- I've been chewing through the God Of War games and Resident Evil 4 for the past few weeks to make it past this fucking dry spell.

1. Second playthrough of Wolfenstein the New Order. I picked the other timeline and upped the difficulty to see if I could do it. So far it's more enjoyable than the first time, mostly because I found the controls really weird during the first attempt.

2. I decided to go back to Dynasty Warriors 3/Extreme Legends and see if I could unlike more of the character's fourth weapons. It's not an easy task but I managed to unlock two more, and plan to try for more another time.

3. I'm currently working on my backlog so look forward to in this case refers to the next game on my list. Either Uncharted 2 or Dynasty Warriors 8. I haven't quite made up my mind yet.

1: Between my usual doses of Team Fortress 2 and WoW, I've been playing the Xbox One version of Rayman Legends which is currently free for Gold users (buy it, you have no excuse at this point XOne users). I remember stopping at one level largely because I had such a backlog at the time, but now I'm really enjoying myself. The Eye of the Tiger music level is just as awesome as I remember it being, and the James Bond style missions still stand as my favourite.

I've also had trouble sleeping lately, so I usually turn on my PS2 and play Resident Evil 4 until I get tired enough to warrant an attempt at sleep. Just defeated the lake monster again, and the game is so much fun, though I imagine if bigger fans of the game were watching me play it they'd be screaming at me for being so shit. I also love how even in the early sections of the game, the camp elements have a subtle presence. A spooky scary atmosphere is completely balanced by Leon defiantly somersaulting out of a second story window.

Oh yes and I started Five Nights at Freddy's 3, which is much more skill-based than the first game. I first died at Night Four, and I suppose the cameos act as good fanservice.

2: Can't really answer that, I can't remember the last time a game challenged me to warrant coming up with some strategy to solve it.

3: Wolfenstein: The Old Blood of course. Only the inhuman wrath and excellence of Bayonetta 2 could stop the majesty of Wolfenstein: The New Order from being my 2014 GOTY. Nothing's standing in the way of The Old Blood for 2015.

I am looking forward to Rise of the Tomb Raider and Treyarch's Call of Duty, though. The former as the gameplay is already excellent, so now they can work on the story.
The latter because after Ghosts being as disgusting as it was and Advanced Warfare being a flawed beauty, I need a home run to bring the series back up to the series' high points. Treyarch delivered that and more last time with 2012's Black Ops II, I sincerely hope they don't let me down in 2015.

Well, I've mostly been playing Deus Ex (the original) and a bunch of Monster Hunter lately. I have been taking a bit of a break from Monster Hunter and I haven't played much of anything in the past week or two, but I went into Deus Ex right off the back of completing Human Revolution - Director's Cut and I've been having a blast with it so far. Just reached Hong Kong, and I've been consistently impressed with pretty much everything except the AI.

2.What is the last thing in a game you had difficulty with and overcame?
Excluding those above, my playthrough of Human Revolution was played as a non-lethal stealth run on the hardest difficulty with all contextual options and prompts turned off; no crosshair, no glowing items, no objective indicators, no CASIE, no cloak, no silent movement, no seeing through walls, no Typhoon. I did get things like the high jump, Icarus Landing, and breaking through weak walls, but that was more because I like how it opens up the exploration of the areas than anything else.

Though, I did also go through the integrated DLC section doing the "Factory Zero" achievement, which meant doing the entire thing without any upgrades, weapons, or grenades.

3.What games are you looking forward to?
A lot that my PC probably won't be able to play, unfortunately. The Witcher 3, Batman: Arkham Knight, and Cyberpunk 2077 primarily.

A few Early Access games have caught my attention too, though I'm always wary about jumping on those. Darkest Dungeon and Satellite Reign are the big ones on my radar.

EDIT: Oh, I've also been heavily considering going through Deus Ex: Human Revolution again and doing a Let's Play of it, because I really love that game.

I finally sat down and told myself to play some of the games I bought for my PS4 instead of clearing my backlog of PS3 ones. I've been playing Alien: Isolation, and the game has taught me that if a Xenomorph ever does show up, I'm dead. So much dead. Second-person-to-die-in-the-movie dead. I do good when I'm against humans or the androids, but when that thing shows up, all bets are off. I mean, I seriously opened a door and it was standing right there. Just...I can see why some people think the game cheats at times. But I'm enjoying it and I love the sense of dread and then the utter sense of relief whenever I make it to a safe zone.

Funny enough, the same game. Not counting the number of times I've thrown noise makers across the room to escape, I just got to the part with the electric floor. Could not for the life of me figure out how to cross it until I realized that you can push the 'up' and 'down' arrows on the shelves more than once. As in, you can keep pushing down until the thing goes all the way into the floor.

Bloodborne, without a doubt. Bring it.

1. Final Fantasy Tactics: REBIRTH
I'mma use me some archers at last, and they aren't going to be utterly worthless for once!

2. Making the text readable through my crappy video plugin (GL2 crashes on start for...no good reason. GL1 works fine though)

3. S.P.A.Z. 2 & Terraria Otherworld (though neither have a release date)

1.What was the last game you played? How are you finding it?

Crypt of the NecroDancer and I really like it. Also, I FUCKING SUCK AT IT. I realized I am inept when it comes to listening at beats in music...and since the game is all about moving with the beat, it's kind of like playing Dark Souls with knives jabbed in my hands. Zone 2 is just brutal - I managed to go through Zone 1 but the music in Zone 2 is just...I am completely unable to nail the beat

This is it. And that's supposed to be the same BPM as this

But I either go too slow or way too fast.

2.What is the last thing in a game you had difficulty with and overcame?

Hmm, it's definitely not Crypt of the NecroDancer. Well, at least I don't count it - I did play through Zone 2 as Bard - he's basically a cheat character and moves regardless of the beat. I did that to unlock the traders that were there, I'm still struggling to go through it with the default character.

So, I dunno, I suppose my pick for "something I overcame" would be Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. I decided to give it another spin after...well, many years. Well, I quickly realised something - something I was aware of when I first played it, but now I managed to understand it better. And that's the fact that the camera is fucking shit. Oh, I did remember the "cinematic" camera butting in to make sure I suffered, but I managed to persevere through it first time I played (and even today I remember how much pain it caused me in one particular section). However, when I played it now I saw how bad it was. It would switch into a completely different angle in the middle of your move...which would OF COURSE, mess up your controls, as now they are according to the new view point. And it even does that a couple of paces before you reach a trap or an obstacle, to make sure you hit them. It even does it in the middle of a jump, occasionally, too.

But I used a new strategy against the bad camera: I quit and I uninstalled the game. Done. I count that as my win.

3.What games are you looking forward to?

Well, for new video game releases, it'd be Hotline Miami 2 (I loved the first) and then Pillars of Eternity (I'm a backer). For other new releases, it'd be Mage the Ascension 20th Anniversary Edition on the PnP front. I'm a backer there as well, and I'm actually wearing the T-shirt that claims so. I just love Mage and I really like the idea of the anniversary editions, too. I dropped enough money to get me the deluxe physical copy, too, because I really think it's worth it.

1.What was the last game you played? How are you finding it?

I just beat the story mode in Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor... I love the game, and the Nemesis System is awesome unfortunately it didn't give you enough incentive to keep using it and pushing captains up the ranks, by mid-game I already had every rune I could want, and stopped trying to play the system, and just killed or dominated any Captain i found. Also the ending was terrible, not necessarily in a story sense, but the fact that the last boss is LITERALLY a 4 sequence Quick Time Event... that was just pure lame! Even the mini-boss guy isn't really a fight as you just sneak up on him and stealth drain him to win. Quick Time Events for final bosses are AWFUL and leave a pretty poor taste in my mouth, especially for a game with such a dynamic combat system!

2.What is the last thing in a game you had difficulty with and overcame?

This sounds like an interview question...

Probably the counter mechanic in Shadow of Mordor, I kept getting hit, getting combos broken, etc. until I learned if I just keep hitting the Stun and Counter buttons simultaneously (B + Y) it's an insta-win for a fight since you will always stun enemies unless you need to counter them, and your combo score goes up until it hits "red" and you perform an instant execution, with talents the needed combo score is only 5 and you can do a double execution for each, so you can dispatch an entire army of Uruks just by spamming B+Y and never get hit except by ranged enemies or very strong Captains. You can vary it up too, I usually count my combo multiplier and when I hit red I do the combat brand and turn Uruks to my side so it turns into a massive civil war fight.

3.What games are you looking forward to?

The most immediate ones are Pillars of Eternity which barring a delay should be out at the end of this month (March), then there's Grand Theft Auto: V for PC, both of which I've pre-ordered (and I could care less about other people's opinions on pre-ordering).

Aside from those I am also looking forward to The Witcher 3 even though I haven't played the first two very much I really really want to get into this series and hope the third entry will do it for me.

I'm also hyped for Torment: Tides of Numenera (also a backer on), Sword Coast Legends (yet another Baldur's Gate-esque CRPG), and I am somewhat excited for Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain since it will be on PC as well.

lastly I am waiting for the 1.3 update to Terraria so I can get back into that, with the new updates I know I'll want to start a new world, so continuing in my current ones seems a waste currently. I also want to play Starbound and Shroud of the Avatar which I both own but not until they leave Early Access, right now the frequency of content updates is far too rapid for me to keep up with.

As someone who beat all the secret bosses, I can tell you it won't be a pleasant journey. They're all difficult and on a completely different level to the regular bosses (who were no slouches themselves). The 2nd one is a particular thorn in my ass. Regular bosses you can technically grind forever for, but not the secret ones. Good luck.

OT:

1. Playing Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (on critical difficulty) and A Walk In The Dark. BBS is pretty good (and my favourite of the non-numbered KH games) but it's padded to hell. I beat AWITD not too long ago, but had to quit the challenge levels because my wrists were hurting. It's very much a Super Meat Boy kind of platformer, and holy crap is it hard. I keep getting stuck in the environment too. I enjoy it, but there's not a lot to the game if you're not looking to do leaderboards.

2. AWITD I guess. I beat all the main levels and about half of the challenge levels. The levels usually take only 30 seconds, but they take a lot of practice.

3. The Last Guardian (shutupletmebelieve!) and not much else. A Hat In Time looks cool, as does Shelter 2, and I'm curious to see what they do with Ratchet and Clank and Zelda U (though I lack a WiiU) this year.

1. I'm currently playing Homeworld:Remastered and Kerbal Space Program. I'm enjoying both, and in the case of HW, I played the original back in the day when it was new and haven't played it since then. KSP is KSP.

2. In KSP I'm trying to build a rocket capable of getting a lander to the moon, land and coming back. The problem is playing in Science mode, so I don't have the heavier rocket parts or fuel lines so I'm having problems building a big enough rocket that won't shake itself apart before reaching orbit. I also kind of need to go to the Mun to get more science to get better stuff. So I'm kind of frustrated by that now.

3. Well, soon I'm gonna start playing Crusader Kings II for the first time. However, I also really want to replay AC2,BH,Rev and ACIII in sequence and more or less back to back. So I'm probably gonna jump into that after I finish HW. Or I'll play HW:Cataclysm for the first time(I've owned the game for a decade and not played it yet. I'm a bad person).

1.What was the last game you played? How are you finding it?
Just finished Assassin's Creed: Rogue. Yes, it's basically Black Flag reskinned. But I enjoyed the story from the Templar's point of view. And it's interesting to consider the Assassins having fallen from their lofty ideals since Altair's and Ezio's day become more of a self-righteous cult than an actual benevolent order. I also found it less bloated than previous AC games. No silly tailing or eavesdropping missions. And ironically, there were actually more assassination missions as a Templar than as an Assassin.

2.What is the last thing in a game you had difficulty with and overcame?
One particularly difficult mission of Rogue near the end required pitting my ship against a fairly tough Man O' War. Unlike Black Flag, you spend most of the time sailing eddies and channels instead of the ocean so there's not much room to maneuver. The mission pretty much call for my to use all the trick at my disposal (fire barrels, mortars, heavy shot) and a little luck. But I finally took that bastard out.

3.What games are you looking forward to?
None. I feel empty inside. :'-(
