Ok so i just downloaded steam, i never really paid much attention to it cause ive always been more of a console gamer. I have played some good PC games... mainly Civ and i wanna try some more

Which good games can i get off it? recommendations?
I like just about anything that wont make me s*** myself

also i want to get a total war game, which one is the best? I wanna get Rome or Medieval since those times interest me more than the Empire which takes place in the 1700's

edit: Yes i know of the orange box, i plan on buying it.

If you're looking for a good RTS the I'd have to recomend Rise of Nations: Rise of legends.

If you're looking for a shooter, then you should check out anything made by valve.

Get the Total War Mega Pack. You get Rome+Expansions, Medieval 2+Expansion and Empire for 60 euros if not wrong. That's around 6 games.

You need a Source engine game for that.

Half Life 2 and Episodes, TF2, Counter Strike, Portal or Left 4 Dead. So buy the Complete Valve Pack. So if you want anything by Valve just buy the Valve Complete Pack and you get every game by them for 70-80 Euros.

Or buy this weekend deal which is the complete THQ pack which includes: Company of Heroes, Dawn of War+Expansions, Dawn of War 2 and STALKER.

Edit: Other games:

Plants Vs Zombies, World of Goo, AudioSurf, Tales of Monkey Island, Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition,

Completely agreed with this. For a mod, it looked amazing for it's time. Zombie Master is also a fun, albeit buggy, romp. Best part? FREE!

Something un-completely zombie related: Get Obsidian Conflict or Synergy. Both are fun, both are free, but I find OC to have a few less assholes on it.

Keep checking the weekly deals for cheap stuff. Also, you can't go wrong with the Orange Box.

It's not technally free cause you need to have at least one Source Engine Game. xP

Graw! Damned technicalities! :D
Technically, you are correct though.
In that case: Buy Counter Strike or something heavily mod-able. That works too.

Rome remains the gold standard for the Total War series (and as I've said dozens of times before, the gold standard for gaming in general---it's my all-time favorite game.)

Plus, anything developed in-house by Paradox Interactive (for Steam users, that means Europa Universalis III Complete, Hearts of Iron II Complete, Europa Universalis Rome Gold, and Hearts of Iron III) won't do you wrong, although HoI3 still needs a patch or two to reach its potential.

And if you don't get Mount&Blade, I will hunt you down and bludgeon you with a shrubbery.

You can do that with Rome Total War too!

I don't recommend Medieval 2 Total War+Kingdoms without the Stainless Steel mod. To every person out there playing ME2 without Stainless Steel...YOU DOING IT WRONG!

Buy the Mega Pack!

http://store.steampowered.com/sub/1350/

It's more pricey but you get every Total War game on Steam. Which includes Rome one of the best games ever. And work in progress Empire:Total War.

IMO, Medieval II is by far the best Total War game.

As for good games on Steam, try the Orange Box, although everything on there is an FPS, because I only ever played TBS and RTS games before I got it, now I love FPS games.

Also, try Evil Genius. It's fairly cheap and bloody brilliant. It's my favourite game along with TF2 and Medieval II: Total War.
