If you're looking for a good RTS the I'd have to recomend Rise of Nations: Rise of legends.

If you're looking for a shooter, then you should check out anything made by valve.
didnt see rise of nations, it looks good, and i plan on getting Orange box for Team fortress 2
Sorry, I keep thinking that Rise of Nations is on Steam for some reason.

Parents like to hear the words discount and lots of stuff for one price. Makes it feel more cheaper than it actually is.

ok this a top 10 of what i would recommend:

1. Orangebox 29.99? *
2. Bioshock 19,99?
3. Left4Dead 29.99? *
4. Garrys mod 9.99? (requires atleast one source game in your list)
5. Counterstrike 19.99?
6. Call of duty 4 49.99?
7. Unreal Tournament 3 19,99? *
8. World of Goo 19.99?
9. Audiosurf 9.99?
10. Osmos 8.99?

11. Track Mania Nations (free)

*can be bought to steam via retail

the best tactic on steam is first to get a good game pack like the OrangeBox (contains 5 games)
you can buy that one in the store, as it is probably (research it!) cheaper in retail, and when you install the game you add the code to your account and you have the same effect as buying it on steam!!! (unreal Tournament 3 has it too)

and then see if there are any offers like weekend deals out there.
weekend deals are short actions where you can buy a certain game(pack) for 50% or 75% off!
the tradeoff is that the offer only last 2 or 3 days

also they have loads of indie games, games that are a lot cheaper than normal games, though they are smaller, made by smaller studios and probably not a mainstream FPS.
they are also more ingenious original surprising and fun! did i say they were cheaper? ;)

p.s.
THQ pack is on sale, it looks great, lots and lots of games!

If you can't get them to buy the mega pack, I would recommend Rome. It'll be easier on your PC (Medieval and Empire are somewhat taxing on the system) and is IMO easier for beginners. Plus, I just think it's more fun.

Never played it but try Grim fandango it's supposed to be very creative (According to Yahtzee anyway.) it's an adventure game though, so it's not for people who get bored or frustrated easily.

Killing Floor is also really great, it's a nice break from L4D and it's also only around $30 I think.

If the price tag is $5-$15 or so I'd say get it, it's a great game but does involve's a lot of thinking though but is funny all the way through.

One thing I would say with Steam is do not assume that the games on it are the cheapest, many non-Valve games are even more expensive than at retail.

OT: Make sure you get the Orange Box, Killing Floor and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

It will most likely get released soon on Steam as LucasArts is relesing their old adventure games on Steam now.

Funny too you say? Cool, I've never played a real adventure game before and this one's unique looking art caught my eye and I wikipediaed it and it sounds cool.
