My hint to chosing a character in a RPG game were you can customise it/him/her. (as a male)

Pick the race that makes the best looking female character = do make her

How about playing the game instead posting in forums ?

*Upon giving Girlfriend seat at the keys after Skyrim installed on PC*
"Alice dear, what are you doing?"
"I'm stealing everything not nailed down. Ooh a bowl!"

Dear Reader you may have stolen some nord's wooden spoon and barrel of apples but rest assured that girl has stolen my very heart. <3

EDIT: Also, arrow in knee. Commence lolz.

The immersion will be even greater if you do whatever the hell you want, without asking for advice. Any race / build can be seriously good, and the roleplay values in this game are pretty good. I would say to just go nuts.

Lulz.

OT: Seriously. Dont worry about the race. They say that they are better at certain skills but all this means is that they start out with a higher skill level with those skills. You can remedy this easily but just using that skill a ton. It's basically just a head start. Do check out the racial abilities though. Some of them are once a day deals and not that useful but some are actually really cool. Nords have 50% frost resistance, Khajit can see in the dark whenever they want, Bretons have 25% magic resistance.
After you finish picking you character, I'd suggest just roaming until you get your feet wet. Pick a direction and just walk. Get a feel for the world and how the skills work. Do random quests or work on your crafting. Learn how the game plays and how you want to play it. After that you can continue with that character if you like where it's going or start over with a better understanding of the game and what you want to get out of it.

Well, what you should do racially depends a lot on what class you want to be... or what psuedo-class you want to make for yourself, rather.

I, personally, decided to go Mage, and lucked into Imperial as a race. The Imperial begins with two low-level spells... a fire blast and a self-healing spell, allowing me to jump right in to what I wanted to do... and the tiny bit of extra gold is nice, too.

Conveniently, there's also a Mage's Guild quest hub, so I jumped off the main story about five quests in after meeting the monks and headed up that way... that and its offshoots have kept me pretty well occupied.

Obviously, if bending the very fabric of reality isn't your cup of tea, then your experience should vary a bit. :p

I went a dark elf because of the natural tolerance for fire, dragons and all that, seemed like a sensible choice. I didn't care for the Nord race, even though the game kinda steers you that way - I thought they all looked too generic. The cats and lizards are just too rediculous for me, they don't look human enough for my liking.

Once you decide your race, play through some early quests, then stop and decide how you want to progress. For instance, there are several side quests - you might have more fun playing those than the main quest. One good skill to go for is blacksmithing, try and get that to 60 as soon as you can, because then you can improve enchanted items, and that's pretty vital. Maybe go hunting for ore, get a pickaxe and a bow, hunt for animals for food and skin, hunt for ore deposits and mines. Then with the leather and iron, make tons of iron daggers to boost your blacksmithing.

I found the bows to be very powerful, more useful than my greatswords, and they offer a couple of benefits - like letting you zoom in when aiming, and even slowing down time when aiming. Very handy stuff if you fancy a stealthy, strategic approach to Skyrim.

I guess my main nugget of advice would be to take your time. Prepare for quests properly, if you don't have a lot of health potions or weapons, then deal with that first - the worst thing to happen is for you to be stuck somewhere during a quest with no easy way out. If things get too much, don't be ashamed of turning the combat difficulty down for that quest.
Thing is, you get no clue about the difficulty of a quest, or even if you've discovered the location already - so don't think that just because you got a side quest, that you can even get there, are experienced enough, and completing the quest is even possible. Some quests need you to do other quests first, that sort of thing, so take your time deciding your next quest, and try and mix them up, give yourself a varied job history before worrying too much about defining your character. Also don't think that you have to spend skill points right away, I would advise saving them, and using them when your skills are enough to get the perks you actually want.

Pick one race at random depending on how good you think it looks. Then spend hours on the character creator making that preset character look ugly as hell with the sliders. Proceed to rage and choose another race at random. REPEAT.

In effect you will have trapped yourself in the character creation screen due to indecisiveness. If you can best this, than you are worthy of adventuring through these Nordic lands. May the Nine be your guidance.
I have nothing to say about this post. I just want you to know your avatar scares the living shit out of me.

Ignore people who say you should match certain races to certain classes, it has almost no real effect. I have Argonian mages, assassins and warriors, and they're all ridiculously powerful.

...

... Actually wait, that's probably just because Argonians are awesome. BE ARGONIAN!!!

Then just do whatever the hell you want, that's kind of the point of the game. You might as well be playing Tediously Long Corridor 9 if you're just going to follow everyone else's instructions anyway.

The races have a specialisation that suggests what they're better geared toward, but it's not a be all and end all. It just gives you a small headstart which, by game's end will be largely irrelevant. I intended to play a Breton mage/thief and ended up as an archer/thief. Didn't feel in any way worse off for it. Pick what you like the look of the most.

A Nord would probably give you a good opportunity for role-playing, as then the civil war dividing Skyrim is something close to your character's heart. At the same time, the Khajit and Argonian are different to the standard human and also allow for interesting RP and gameplay opportunities.

Altmer, Bretons and Dunmer start with bonuses to magic. Redguards, Orcs and Nords start with advantages to combat skills. Bosmer, Khajit and Argonian all start with bonuses to thievery skills. Imperials seem to be half warrior/mage. Play what you like the look of the most. Or do what I did and create a hybrid character! [http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2614] :)

I'm with the 'go and do what you want' crowd. That's the thing that's always drawn me to the Elder Scrolls, is that you can literally go and do what you want with it. I'm currently fifty hours into Skyrim and have only done three quests in the main story line. I was about thirty hours into Oblivion before I went into my first Oblivion Gate. I like adventuring, doing random quests from NPCs and seeing the landscape. My first playthrough is usually as an Orc specializing in one handed weapons, particularly maces, without much thought towards magic. There's nothing like just wandering around smacking things up with my mace and helping people out. Then of course managing to join the Fighter's Guild, Companions, Mages Guild, Thieves Guild, Morag Tong, Dark Brotherhood, what have you. So yeah, there's quite a bit to do, play how it suits you and have fun with it. But again, you made this post a few hours ago so I assume you're too busy mining ore or killing a bandit to read this.

Why yes I AM childish! Thanks for noticing! :p
If you're going to make a character look like Mr T then at least make him a Knight Elf Mohawk.
WIN.

What, that's not enough to get past the mods? haiku jam time!

any race will work just fine. what to do is just get out there and do something. anything. A nice thing I think is the lack of a class system. people keep saying if you want to be a mage or thief or warrior.. screw that no class system mean you can mix and match and create your own class. And thats the thing not only do you create your own class as you play you also define who your character is. What I am saying is dont get trapped into thinking you have to pick a class and play that class, theres nothing wrong with being a warrior with a sword or whatever who is both a mage and an expert bowman.
