I actually TRIED to get addicted to it while i played it with friends, and i just cant do it. I find no fun in grinding and questing for pelts and berries. Its the same with cigarettes, i smoke them rather rarely lately, but ill go on cigarette binges when my friends are smoking and offer them to me but I just cant get addicted.

Dungeons and Dragons Online. It's free, the quests are broken up very nicely so you have many stopping points, and 75% of it can be solo'd if you pick the right set of skills. I still play it on occasion, and I have roughly as much fun as I did in WoW without the huge timesink or obsession factor.

Pretty much every other game I play besides WoW comes from the good people from Valve.
You should pay them a visit.

But honestly, there's only two paths for people who quit WoW. They actually do quit for good, or get bored and return to WoW. And seeing Cataclysm, something tells me that the second path is going to be more common nowadays.

I've had a lot of fun with Dragon Age. Another game I suggest is Heroes of Might and Magic 3, I've been playing that game on and off for 6 years now, the expansions and the unofficial in the Wake of Gods expnasion was awesome too, it's really old though.

On a sidenote, I've started playing World of Warcraft 5 days ago. Level 21 now, man what a game. I'm still not very familliar with the towns and have just started doing instances but there's just soo much to the game that I would probably be able to play for a year and still be a newb. It's daunting just how serious some people take raiding, today someone was recruiting for his raid-group, a requirement was having no deaths besides raid wipes, what the hell?

1. congratulations!!!
2. If you're looking for a MMO, i suggest guild wars, or Aion, or any NCsoft MMO really, they do a pretty good job with all of them.
3. or do something outdoors-ey. try biking

I've been thinking about WoW alot today. I don't like the game, but I have alot of good memories and I did alot of wild and crazy things in that game. I also was able to make some very real impact upon communities through my actions, especially during my last year of playing where I took my typical relentless character and put it into the server economy. I'd be lying to myself to say that I didn't miss those moments, but I also know at the same time that the game itself is kinda junky and the only thing i'd truly enjoy is a return to a community that allowed me to learn and experience alot of things that have served me well ever since.

Oh, and dominating a server's economy is always fun.

So... someone stop me before I consider going back to that bad, and yet so compelling game. Fallout 3 just isnt enough. >_<
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. DON'T DO THAT! Ahem. Im trying to kick my addiction, not helping.

Nope I'm done. Went rogue. Kick all my guild members below me, sent all my money (and guild's money) to a friend. Told the girl that said she liked me that she was a whore.

No going back. Ever :p

If you're ever open to trying another MMO, try Dungeons & Dragons Online. It's considerably more technical than WoW, admittedly, but I find combat much more fun, and the player base is considerably more newbie friendly and less of the "LOL! DURR" crowd.

Oh, and the quests are a bit more creative than your average MMO. They actually poke fun at the fetch quests in the build up for one:

Them: "Collect 10 rat tails for me"

Me: "Seriously? (one of the dialogue choices)"

Them: "Don't be ridiculous, why would I need those?"

I suggest sunlight. It helps you look less like a zombie after being enslaved by WoW.

Also, you've never really quit WoW until you delete your characters.

That's the worst part of WoW. If you let it, the game can easily swallow an enormous chunk of your life for months or years on end. Then, when you finally decide to quit, it's like having amnesia; you can't remember what the hell you used to do with your free time. The whole experience is incredibly sobering and depressing because you realize something so ridiculously trivial had become such an important aspect of your daily routine. Honestly, that's what makes the transition so tough. You're not quitting a game so much as changing your lifestyle.

Anyways, my advice is to combat the boredom with a combination of several activities. Play some games, get out of the house, take up another hobby or three, and so forth. You won't find a single bit that replaces WoW, and you really don't want to - that's kind of the problem with WoW in the first place. It's an adjustment, to be sure, but the one thing you can't do is go back. You'll just fall in again.

By the by, I'm fully aware that a lot of people enjoy a very healthy WoW experience. The game isn't, itself, bad. Still, there's no denying it preys on addictive personalities if those people allow it.
