You know I've often wondered the exact same thing. My K/D ratio is usually pretty good, but as I play objective based games I notice all too often people hunting for kills rather than following the teams needs. I've always wondered if the K/D screen was entirely removed until the very end of the match. That way it's still something to strive for, but not being able to see it all the time might push it further to the back of people's minds.

Another alternative is maybe to keep the K/D ranking screen available to see all the time, but not show the actual K.Ds. That way you get a rough Idea how you're doing compared to everyone else, but you have no idea how far above you the next guy is, or how many points the guy below you needs to draw level. Maybe that would just make people strive to be the best player they can be more often. Of course it would only work if the ranking was based on overall points rather than kills, Battlefield style.

I try to keep my kdr at least 1.0. Other than that i don't really pay attention to it. It all depends on the game really.

I personally would love to see kill/death ratios and more or less all stats and achievements removed. A good player should be known by reputation. Case in point, I used to hang around TF2 alot and there were a few really skilled players that I'd recognize instantly by name. I didn't need to see their score. I had played against them before and I knew I was up against a tough opponent.

play battlefield. Even in deathmatch (Which is seperated into four squads of four, instead of two massive teams duking it out), the emphasis is on tight team play and POINTS. sure kills matter, but nothing's better than getting 4000 points from revives and heals.

Most of the rest of the game revolves around securing objectives, be it in the "domination" type of game (called Conquest in Battlefield), or objectives you need to blow up. And the best part is, people actually try.

Like I said, it's all about the points. Having said that, do people still strive for a positive KDR? Absolutely.... but I've had a game where I had a .57 KDR, yet singlehandedly led my team to victory because I had roughly 6000 points in revives... keeping people alive and turning the tide of the battle. That, my friend, feels almost as epic as 59 kills and 6 deaths (Which also has happened to me)... almost.

on a side note, I'm HONESTLY surprised at how few people seem to try battlefield. almost all of their complaints are solved in battlefield. ESPECIALLY campers. Someone in a choke point or held up in a house? just destroy it. Problem solved. :)
I'd also like to add that battlefield doesn't even show you your kdr during the match, only your points, so it helps relieve the stress of always trying to keep your kdr up due to the fact that you don't know what it is.

Unfortunately my friends (who solely play CoD) decided that only showing your points made battlefield a bad game.
It took me forever to get them to atleast try it in the first place. :(

I share this problem. Every time I try to stop caring about my success in games I have giant numbers reminding me about my successes and failures all the time. This is especially true in Brawl, and the one specific reason why so many people just can't play Smash Bros games "for fun"-- because at the end of the match it always tells you who wins and who loses.

Yes there is certainly too much Kraft Dinner in these games. How dare they saturate our entertainment with cheesy goodness!

But really it is annoying...

So ive been playing a lot of black ops lately, and ive been getting really annoyed because im starting to get really bad K/Ds on the games i play, and from watching the kilcams, most of the deaths, are from campers. If i had to guess, id say that they were camping so that they could keep up a positive K/D, which has the unfortunate effect of lowering mine.

So it lead me to think, how much more fun would a game be if it just stopped worrying about Kill/Death ratios and all that crap? It may stop campers which are freaking annoying, but it will also stop people from getting so annoyed (like i was getting). I realized that i actually have started to care about my K/D alot, and its taking away a lot of my enjoyment when i see the end game leaderboards and me having 8 kills to 15 deaths. instead of this i want to be able to just play the game and not give a shit about the numbers at the end.

So all in all i think that games would be somewhat more enjoyable without this whole K/D business

So whats your opinion on the matter?
d

Is that bad company or the main series?
both. :)
well ive heard the battlefield series really shines on PC but my PC's shite. I was thinking of getting Battlefield 3 though since it looks orgasmic

It is impossible for someone to truly be uncaring about a K/D ratio or anything of the sort. It is a way to measure skill, particularly in comparison to those you are playing against. It is a large part of what makes multiplayer games that have it fun, as well as a deterrent for those unwilling to withstand the "brutality" of low scores before reaching a higher skill level.

The 'ratio' is also why people rarely care about "assists" or partial kills, as they do not add to the K/D ratio. A person may have 70 assists, but only be 0/15 in terms of K/D, which can lead to not only harassment by other players, but also serve as a demotivation to the player. On the other hand, someone who is 15/0 in terms of K/D but has no assists will most like be referred to as "pro".

P.S. Wow I should totally make that into an article.

Its not just for me though, i feel like this obsession with having a good K/D is kinda ruining the experience for a lot of people
I'm very, very rarely at the top of any leader board, generally somewhere at the bottom of everything. Doesn't really bother me at all, I just enjoy going out and killing dudes.

Eh I try to keep it positive (>1) but at the end of the day I don't particularly care - it's just a nice thing to have. Like a ming vase or cupcake.

Aim for the 1/1

Honestly, if your dying to much...it's not other people. It's you.

People defend, kill you. You call it camping.

People use explosives or nade launchers you make up terms like nade spam or noob tube...

You have all these things at your disposal and don't use them, well...start.

There is no lame gamer code of "You must only charge forward, bunny hop and shot gun to the legs like we leet gamers have only done since Doom!"

Play it, have fun. And god sake, don't play by some lame set of rules or honor that no one else plays by. Do what it takes to win, enjoy it... use a nade launcher, defend a HQ point, make them change tactics to beat you. Don't expect them to change their play style so you can get a higher score.

People only project these fake rules and complaints of spamming and camping you force you to play like they want, a suicidal in the open target, so ... don't.

It's fun to play how you play, and enjoy a game how you want.
If someone is camping, nade them. If someone is nade spamming, don't go that way. Don't blindly charge into a death corridor to appease the unwritten law of mindless FPS behavior. Use tactics.

I have gotten into arguments in game about how it's impossible to have a negative K/d ratio they didn't believe me but it gave me the time i needed to kill them while they where rage typing
And on a side note I love camping it's how actual snipers work, and the response i always give people when they try to yell at me for it is "It's OK I was a boyscout I'm allowed to camp" they either like it enough that they forget they were pissed our the get more pissed either way is good for me

No thank you, I've said this before dozens of times and the first reply is always some lamer whining about how I can't play or some foolishness. Because if I don't play like a massive moron they can't kill me to their satisfaction...nice to see someone else agrees.

It's to bad that the whiners usually win, I got VAC banned from MW2 because enough people claimed I was hacking when in reality i was camping and they kept running down the path into my sniper rounds, or they ran behind a building and didn't slow down so it was simple to "track" them (just knowing how long it takes for someone to travel the length of the cover)

I got banned from a lame server because one of their idiot clan would see me kneeling and shooting, then run infront of me while still firing, stop then try and find who i was shooting at all the while sticking the back of their head into the barrel of my firing weapon.

Go figure?

Oh and then that guy TK'd me about 12 times just running into random rooms and shooting his own team.

But they banned the people tk'd not the tker

I love KD. Sure it's not good for me, and since they changed the cheese powder it hasn't been exactly the same as it used to be, but it's still cheap comfort food.

My first online fps was MW2 which did not have dedicated servers and i saw that everyone was upset so I assumed that they were good, but now after playing Black Ops i hate them because that exact thing can happen you can be kicked out of a game just for being good, or for someone else being an idiot
