Apologies for the late response, but I just got into this thread and saw your post.
Anyways, I'm going to have to
greatly disagree with the notion that this kind of frailty is acceptable with even a $500 phone. Maybe something around $100 - $200... maybe. But a phone that costs as much as an Xbox One with Kinect or a mid-low range desktop (let alone something that costs as much as a moderately high-end PC rig like the iPhone 6) being too fragile to even keep in your pocket (where phones are often kept) is absolutely outrageous.
I don't think it is even acceptable on a $100-200 phone. I just conveyed my message a little differently than I was thinking.
What I meant was that this type of thing would be a little more forgivable if Apple sold the iPhones for what they are actually worth.
The phone costs them $200USD to make, the hardware is on par with 2 year old phones like the HTC One and Nexus 5 which are both around $400-500AUD, but Apple sell them starting at $999 with the 128gb model being $1249! They sell it at this price mainly due to "build quality" and "premium materials" but this has just been found to be an absolute load of shit.
They are selling the phone for twice what it's worth and they justify that with the very thing we have just debunked, the phone can bend in your pocket and you can utterly destroy it with your finger tips. That is not an extra $500 worth of build quality.
When did "build quality" become "how it feels in your hand" anyway? That has nothing to do with build quality... so what if it feels smooth, that has nothing to do with how well it's built or how premium the material is.
And on another note, when the hell did Aluminium become a premium material? I can buy a thin sheet of aluminium that has the same amount of raw material as used on 12 iPhones from my local hardware store for under $15. In less than 5 minutes of google searching I sourced thin aluminium sheeting for $1800 PER METRIC TON.
Aluminium is cheap, plastic is actually more expensive. If anything were premium here it would the polycarbonate used on Nokia devices.
Plastic is not only more expensive than aluminium but it is stronger, more robust and more appropriate for an electronic device. I don't know why fanboys keep lapping up Apple and HTC's bullshit about how premium and expensive aluminium is when it is one of the cheapest and weakest materials you can buy.
