I got suspended for something like that once... it involved Cthulhu and Tyler Durden... the administration asked me about those two and actually looked them up on the internet! ("We found videos of this... Fight Club. It's pretty violent")

They were also concerned that I might play Dungeons and Dragons.

I meant it quite humorously to be honest, but hey, they had to celebrate the anniversary of Columbine somehow... no one told me it was though heh

Wow Pimppeter all I can say is that you fill me with rage. "Yeah sure let's punish the kid but do nothing to the bullies since we don't have documented evidence!" Yeah sure. Let the bullies who made this kid miserable enough to make a death note keep on with their abuse because you don't have video taped evidence *rolls eyes*. It's a gradeschool for God's sake. If a child says other kids are bullying him then you can bet they are really bullying him.
I know, right? We should totally punish anybody who we have any, no matter how small, suspicions of. Innocent until proven guilty? Fuck that shit, lets burn those supposedly bullying cunts and prop up their bodies outside of town as a message to anyone else who even thinks about acting as they did. Lets not even consider for a minute that the bullies could do the exact same thing and get an innocent kid suspended, lets no even consider the fact that the kid might have been overacting or only put the names in there as a sick joke, but instead let us get all fired up and vengeance seeking that we remove any common sense from our day to day lives and have those people suffer.

Seriously, you guys will jump at and attack anything that is labeled as villainous. Bullies, Rapists, Witches, Justin Bieber, you'll have them all hang them if someone tells you to.

This is why you should have a "Do not kill list." It implies that you want to kill people and you might kill but there is nothing much people can do.
Or they should not make physical lists at all. Thought police isn't here yet.

I mean, if you're going to go against society - and I don't mind if you do - it might be a better idea to still pretend to follow its values for further gain. Showing your colours in a situation where it's you against a few billion (or much lower but still not really advantageous odds) is simply a stupid idea.

Many successful serial killers at least faked "being normal". Writing lists, changing names to eeeevil versions and doing similar things might be a trope to use in fiction, but one would have to be pretty stupid to do that in real life.

Dude but we're the most intelligent website on the interwebs111!

Sorry, I had to say that.

Yeah, it's a pretty obvious trend in any of Escapist threads. Not so much people as sheeple, and fuck I hate that word.

The school was not justified in the suspension of the child. he didn't mean any harm in it, literally. it's equivalent to thinking "Man that guy's an ass ,I wish he were dead." In passing. The kid knew nothing was going to happen, and likely did not have the intention of anything happening. It's not a sign that the kid is going to do anything unless he has any inclination of actual actions. They say "We realize this is serious and not a joke" like the kid's huffing paint. I understand huffing paint is likely to cause some harm, but the likelihood of a 'Death Note' resulting in any harm at all is slim to none. was the child trying to solicit a Hitman? Was he planning out an actual course of action with it? The mother of the child on the list should react to this the same way she should react to the kids calling her child an asshole. Of course, this is also a typical scenario in which the bully is beating up the kid, and the kid finally gets fed up and throws a punch at the other kid or says something, only to have the bully run to a teacher or adult and claim to be the victim when he is equally guilty. "Gimme your lunch money!" one minute, then "Mommy! That mean kid wrote my name on a piece of paper wit ha date under it!" the next.

DID HE HAVE A POTATO CHIP!?

In all seriousness I consider this to be a tad iffy, here in Australia our schools seem like that one in the beginning of Serenity (Minus the extremely creepy psychic girl and equally creepy attitude towards work) when compared to the stories I hear about school shootings, drug traffickings and metal detectors from schools in the states.

I'm sure the kid's perfectly level-headed and I can relate to wanting to do...despicable, things towards fellow classmates in the past but I'd probably be scared shitless if my name appeared on what is most probably a hit list, joke or not.

I stopped at the "possible hit list" part it could also have been a list of people the kid wanted to invite for his birth day party or something like that

I can kinda see where the police are coming from here. I don't think that they want another school shooting which is what I think that they think that Death Note was for. However, all this could have been avoided if they at least looked into the kid's bullying claim.

I must admit though, that the Justin Beiber thing did make me laugh really hard.

"The child was in fact being bullied by other 8th graders, including the ones on the list"

Wow... it took a news report and two interviews to work that out?

This seems pretty silly, even if my name was in it, I would not be even remotely worried. The fact that Justin Bieber's name was written in it is, in itself, pretty funny.

It's a lot more common than people think. 'Death lists' are usually put together by groups of disenfranchised youths, although never carried out. Having the list alone relieves some of the hate.
Incidentally this is probably one of the reasons Deathnote was so popular, it drops the scenario of 'if that list of yours worked' to youths like these.

I actually find it ODD to see the odd 1 out of 1000 cases like this one which garners attention from the school body or other enforcement.
