Damn, I remember playing red rover and british bulldog when I was in school. They told us we couldn't, but we did anyway. I'm sure that these HOA idiots can't actually stop this. What are they going to do, chase down the kids in the street?

I'm so glad that homeowner's associates don't have this level of power on freehold properties in Canada (where I live). It's criminal the sort of things they have the power to institute.

Hey what's that thing again which is pretty damn dangerous? I think it was called American Football.

Funny how the parents would never ban that game.
It's because children don't play math rock.
?

That is my only response I can give you, care to elaborate please?

I remember when they banned dogeball. Back then I thought it was insane but now I remember it got very violent. But, tag? What the hell is this crap? Each of their members trying to get this law approved should be smacked for being stupid enough to try such a thing.

tag, you are stupid

while at my school they never banned tag we were not allowed to enter the awesome maze they had planted at some point because some kid might get lost in it. So they closed off all the entrances(the hedges that made up the walls were too thick to get through). So my friends dad decided to teach us how to cut a whole you would not see unless you knew where it was into those hedges with the gardening tools we had at school. playing tag in maze was way awesome at age 10

So on top of California parent's attempt to ban the Dictionary we have Florida residents trying to ban outdoor play. I think we have 2 states to force into the sea now. Pull Disney World and Universal up to Georgia and let the land sink.

Seriously? Kids playing together outdoors is one of the best ways to build social skills, boost their immune systems and just enjoy themselves. As long as the parents are responsible and attentive (shocking idea, I know) and teach their kids the old standbys of "look both ways", "don't talk to strangers" they will be fine. Everyone is far, far to wary of implausible dangers and coddling you child will not help.
Right, I forgot the immune system thing. Where I live kids aren't allowed to go out now without mosquito netting. Sure West Nile is a nasty thing but making them sweat in heavy netting for their "safety" seems stupid to me.

My parents did it right. They let me learn what not to do, were there when I needed help or advice and let me GROW ON MY OWN with friends out in the field.

Schools have started taking down the classic play structures that we all loved so much and are replacing them with lousy plastic "safe" structures. Gone are the big slides of old.

Being a kid now must suck.
when i was a kid i went on top on the monkeybars hung upside down and fell on my head got beack up and did the same thing the next day if that happens today the monkeybars get torn down and the area is bathed in holy water but i turned out fine i still have a higher than average iq (and got some sense pounded into me literaly) but the banning of tag is just idiotic i mean whats nect banning running fallowed by jogging of and i suppose bikes will always require training wheels untill you're 16 god with each passing day i welcome the apocalypse more and more

The more dangerous the playing field for Tag, the more fun it is. At my old school, there was an area where you had a wall of varying height between two areas at different elevations, one sided onto a building, with a railing across the top of parts of it. This led to games of tag that involved wall kicks, wall runs, and jump/grab/pulling ourselves up walls to avoid capture. This was infinitely more fun than playing on a flat grassy field.

Though, isn't "Go play in traffic" synonymous with long walks on short piers?
that... sounds... EPIC!!! when i was a kid we played roof tag in winter i fell a story had to be dug out of the snow but man was it worth it (proud to be canadian)

O.O

Honestly, I'm disgusted with how obsessed parents are with kid safety these days. This isn't the only place I've heard of where parents are limiting kids from having fun. On the radio the other day I heard a dad who was describing a school that sent out a letter to all parents because two kids were arm wrestling. Not violent fighting or anything, just who can wrestle their opponent's arm down. I also heard about a summer camp for kids where they've banned ball tag.

Ugh.

So, do you people have opinions on how kids are overprotected these days? Oh sure, supervision is important depending on how long you leave kids out to play but they need to learn to fend for themselves.

Your thoughts Escapist?
I think you've seriously misread this article.

The HOA made a pretty clear argument in the article: This area does not have a playground. It has a parking lot. Folks knew this when they signed up to live here. Parking lots like this just aren't appropriate places for kids to play unsupervised, and it's not the responsibility of... well... anyone to provide a playground.

The issue, to me, doesn't seem to be "Kids will get hurt playing tag." While it is partially an issue of liability (watch a kid get hurt and see how quickly the lawyers come out, right or wrong), it's also about the other residents:

1. Parking lots are for cars. I can't count how many times I've been trying to get out of a parking lot and a little kid comes barreling out from behind another car right in front of me. Kid's a damn idiot for running around like that, and of course I'm taking it slow... but you'd bet if I even bumped that kid, my ass would be in court.

2. Parking lots are for cars. Cars belong to people, who purchased them to drive. They did not purchase them to provide ad hoc playground equipment for unsupervised kids to dent/scratch/climb on.

From the sound of this article, there has been a problem with parents just letting kids run amok in the parking lot. Safety hazards, toys left in traffic areas, damage inflicted by careless kids running around other people's cars, these are all extremely likely complaints in a setting like that.

This measure isn't some initiative from overprotective parents to shelter kids. It's a measure from property owners to protect their stuff from unsupervised kids and lax parents.

hey, kids get beat up. This is the age we roughen 'em up physically so we may horrify them emotionally in Middle School. Cut umbilical cord, or be a less protective kid. I'm not saying care less about your kids, I'm saying don't worked up over it. They're young, lettem get beat up and scraped, that's part of childhood

Reminds me of the retarded policy my elementary school had on soccer. Any student that used their head to hit the ball was pulled from the game and sent to the nurses office for a head injury.

I'm sorry, I thought we were playing soccer, not baseball.
Sorry to tell you this, but it's not healthy for kids to do that. Look into boxing injuries, and you'll see that a surface doesn't have to be hard to deliver a lot of force to the brain. Kids have developing brains, just not a good time to go jostling them.

Now, do I think one headbutt is an instant retard? Of course not. Do I think that a kid who headbutts a ball once is then going to go do it a thousand more times? Of course not.

But do I, as a school, have the money to take the chance that just once some kid is going to have a concussion and the parents will want to sue my school for not stopping him? Of course not.

Do you know why I don't let me friend drive my car? It's not because he's a bad driver, or because I assume he's going to flip it the first chance he gets. It's because I'm the one on the hook if anything goes wrong, so I'd rather make sure I'm the one in control of the car. That means he doesn't get it. As long as schools can be constantly sued for things like this, expect them not to take any chances, either.

i don't think its a matter of learning to fend for themselves or supervision or anything. adult supervision is needed at this day in age because of perverts and psyco killers that weren't around 20 years ago.

its these pricks that for some reason get aroused form depriving little innocent kids from having fun. what right does that stupid ***** have to keep these children from having a childhood? she's either doing it because she's bitter, or because she's psychotic.

i think she should be put in the stocks. god they need to bring back the stocks.

The best lesson is one that you teach yourself. If somebody child-proofs everything, these kids will grow up to do something incredibly stupid and probably kill themselves just because they can. They'll never have seen it coming.

Is it just me, or does our society's feelings towards kids seem a bit bipolar?

Seriously, whenever they aren't telling kids to go outside and get exercise, their putting laws that deprive kids from actually doing anything outside!

I unfortunately see a trend here what i see is instead of teaching kids to be safe they want schools to do it which basically means I DONT WANT TO TEACH MY KIDS ANYTHING

Sad day indeed

They have taken away every merry-go round that was around....very sad when I grew up and wanted to ride one for old times sake, drove around to ten different parks and not one of the merry-go rounds still existed.

Christ soon all kids will be in bubbles cause they won't have immune systems cause they were never let out of their rooms. If I have a kid I'm gona let him eat dirt if he wants to. I think I'm gona be the guy on the block who no one likes cause he goes against everyones grain.

umm, going a bit far there man (or lady), that kind of thinking lead to the holocaust (no bullshit). social darwinism is outdated, since we have developed society and technology past all other species, it does not apply to us since max physical fitness is no longer a necessity for survival.

anyway! back to the OT. this is kinda bullshit. im still being raised, and i would be a hell of a lot worse off if my parents protected me like they did. they made me work for my things, no allowance, and when i got hurt they tended my wounds but didn't make me stop playing with others. some of my best memories are of playing things like crush the carrier or red rover or ball tag, or jailbreak, all that crap. great times that helped me enjoy my early childhood.
and when i did fuck up bad, only when i really really deserved it, i got a couple slaps on the ass by my parents with a wood spoon, and ill be damned if it didnt drive home the point of what i did was wrong. hell, even nowadays ill get a good smack if i mess up bad (but it rarely happens). its a part of growing up. and if it is rare, it has a hell of a lot more of an effect. when someone is constantly beaten, then it is child abuse, but when it is a rare and most severe punishment, thats just good parenting.
