Parental paranoia has grown unceasingly since the introduction of modern mass communication.
Whereas most areas are exponentially safer than they were in the past, the increased awareness of the few crimes and accidents that do occur have made parents increasingly wary of any form of autonomy for children.
There's also the issue of people being scared for the safety of other people's children. While I can know that I've raised my child to know how to stay reasonably safe, other parents can't know that just by seeing my child. Also, non-parents tend to radically overestimate how fragile kids are.
This all reminds me of the complete insanity after that woman let her 9-year-old ride a New York subway (you can see her response here [http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/09/the-worlds-worst-mom_n_106020.html] with a link to the original article). The news picked up on it and started calling her "The World's Worst Mom". In reality, she was acting completely reasonably and the kid was fine.

This again? Why don't parents be responsible for their spawn rather than the "IMMA SUE EVERYONE 4 EVERYTHING BECAUSE I CAN'T ACTUALLY PARENT!!!11!!11ONE!!1" idiocy. Children need to learn on their own as well as being taught by others. They cannot do this if you smother them from every possible harmful thing in the world. And they wonder why recreational drug use (at least in my area) is going up...
Parents today are pussys. When I was growing up I broke most of my fingers and toes and my left wrist playing games like tag, but did that stop me? NO! Being a child is fun and dangerous but thats part of growing up and preventing a kid from going outside to expend some of their boundless energy is probably a recipe for some other disaster indoors. Then what? Are parents just going to lock their children up in rooms covered in foam?
I say nay to you, todays parents! Let your children to frolick in the great outdoors or indoors and let them play whatever child's game they choose to! Maybe you should just keep a better eye on them, hmm?

It's not about parents being overprotective- its about schools being paranoid about getting sued. It's the American legal system that's at fault.
