I agree, If it's calibrated on a white person, then it won't work as well for a black person, because of the light thing already mentioned. But if it's calibrated for a black person, then it won't work as well for white people, because it reflects too much. How can they win? By making it so that the majority of people who use the damn thing can get it to work.

They could calibrate it for people who are half and half, but yeah, it's more likely a white person is gonna get Kinect than a black person, mainly because there are more whites than blacks in the US and Europe.

The very reason one may perceive another person's skin as 'dark' is because it reflects less light.
Less light = less stuff for a camera, which is wholly dependant on light, to register.
A physically obvious truth is not racism.

I've never had a problem with facial recognition software, I guess I'm an "acceptable" level of black But seriously, this really has more to do the camera quality than anything (same for the HP joke vid). Lower quality sensors don't filter light that well, so darker faces don't get recognized easily. If MS used a higher quality sensor, this wouldn't be an issue (then the new increased cost would be! ).

Did... did you read that article? Not only is 'racist' in quotes to show it is not being used in the normal sense, but the article is claiming there is no problem getting readings from people of darker skin.

Yeah so, I'm guessing that most of you didn't actually read the article and missed the fact that "racist" was in quotes. If anything, the term was meant in jest. The issue was that those wearing darker clothing and with darker skin, were having a harder go with the Kinect.

There was an episode of a show called "Better Off Ted" with exactly the same premise. The company that was the subject of the show decided to change all of its motion sensors to the new model. But this new model wasn't calibrated the same as the old ones, and couldn't recognize people with dark skin. One of the characters had to sleep in the lab all night because the sensors couldn't sense him.

OT: How ridiculous can you get? I'm hoping this is the worst of it. That is an actual oversight that should be addressed. Of course, actually labeling it "racist" is going a little too far. More "stupid" or "a mistake in need of fixing" is more appropriate.

From the original post I don't think he read it either, or at least he misunderstood it. The title of the page is clearly "Kinect not racist".
Everyone is messing up by not reading.... it says in that link that it's a calibration error, at least some read the links.
