Would it be possible to scan non people objects in? Like say... A building made of legos?
Yes, this would be possible. However, you still have to problem of the back not being captured and thus not included. If you adjust the program and use multiple kinects, it should be possible.
And lo, the secret to inventing the holodeck is revealed!

It's impossible for Wii, but the Ps-Eye could easily do it, if that's what you meant, and not just taking a stupid stab against Ninten n' Sony

Considering that the Natal (I REFUSE to call it "Kinect") is just the Eye-Toy with some new bells and whistles, it would be easy.
Feel free to waste your time trying to make that work -.-
If you do prove me wrong; I will buy and eat a hat.

And I liked "Natal" better aswell.

it'd be better if we could reduce the building blocks of MC into things we can actually manipulate and virtually build everything like legos. Sounds a lot more fun than the current way of building.

Sure, it would take some work, hard-wiring two eye-toys together so it can see depth takes a while, put IT'S FUCKING POSSIBLE.
Get to it then.
Just for the record, you would need far more than two.
Two cameras works for 3D-film, not this sort of thing.
But if you disagree, prove me wrong.

I'd rather make a huge cock out of lego, slap that in front of Kinect and get a colossal penis statue imported into my game to go with my obsidian death fortress. Let's see the animals worship that!

Pseye doesn't have the capabilities.
The eye is a camera, sure it would take some SERIOUS hacking but it's possible.
If it doesn't take proper depth measurements no amount of hacking will allow it to do this.
Serious hacking includes hard-wiring two together so it can sense depth.
you said, and I quote:

the Ps-Eye could easily do it,
How the hell is wiring two together and creating software that translates the two images into depth "easy"?

And since you're wiring two together and creating software to interpret depth, what makes it better than any $20 usb webcam?

Face it, you didn't like the idea that Kinect is better at this then the PSEye, but that guy you originally quoted was right, when you have to WIRE TWO OF THEM TOGETHER (something I'm not even sure is possible frankly) to achieve the same thing, it's not "easy" or equivalent.

And lo, god did create a monument of himself in His image, wielding the blade of infinity the world formed itself into the shape which pleased him, and as he glanced upon his creation, he did say with great sincerity ''why does my sword look like a bell-end?''

If by "new bells and whistles", you mean thousands of infrared points of light capable of 3D mapping an object as well as colour detection instead of just being a camera... yeah, other than that they're basically the same thing.
THAT is a new bell and or whistle.

Maybe you don't understand, but saying something has new bells and whistles, means its an upgrade.

Amazing how the Kinect's potential is being raised by the hacking community. Just before people were complaining of it ripping off the Wii or being skeptical of using it.

Now, I wonder how far they'll keep going with this... Almost anything is possible in the realm of hacking.

Maybe you don't understand but "bells and whistles" is a cynical term used to deride an advertised product by being dismissive of the actual benefit of the additions to the product. By stating something has "all the bells and whistles" you are implying it is flashy, and little else.

There is a distinct difference between the mapping capabilities of the Kinect's sensors and cameras, and the Eyetoy camera. Your assertion that the Eyetoy camera could "easily" duplicate what the Kinect hacks have accomplished in the last two months is ill-informed. Your subsequent implication that the Kinect sensor is not a substantially more technically advanced than the Eyetoy camera is laughable.

If the Eyetoy camera could replicate effects the Kinect sensor has achieved, I ask you, where are all the interesting Eyetoy hacks?

No it isn't. you have one lens vs two for depth perception. You also don't have the IR camera scanning depth. Kinect can actually build a wireframe out of a person or object standing in front of it. That is the ability this hack is utilizing. This cannot work for the Playstation eye, and despite what paid advertising (propaganda) videos may claim they are not the same tech.

You know the kinect could probably be used to PLAY minecraft, which is a motion controlled game I could actually get behind
Considering the amount of arm swinging that would involve, I think you'd get tired of playing it that way VERY quickly.
Maybe true but with a Pick that you could add or remove weight from it would be an awesome work out, play mine craft and work on my arms? heck yes lol

Easily combated, simply comment something along the lines of "Making a mountain out of a mole hill"

If you do not; why are making claimes about what the eye-toy can and can not do?
Leave that to people who know what they are talking about.
At most say "I would think thats how it works.." instead of claiming it as fact.
