That's a touchy subject, buddy, although probably less so on this site. It also has nothing to do with animals, so I'm puzzled as to why you keep bringing it up.DRes82 said:But what makes a human not 'just an animal'? Do you believe that they have some divine gift that makes them different from all the other life that evolved along side us?Jack the Potato said:By my definition, we're better in every respect. I suppose if you think of us as "just animals" than yea you can say we're no better (or worse), but most humans greatly resent the notion that we're "just animals," so I doubt you'll find much support there.
I just don't understand the line of thought that says humans are innately superior. Its like believing that the universe revolves around the Earth. Its just so...short sighted and naive.
I really am trying to be open minded, but believing that humans are just born with some spark that makes them superior to other life seems like religion to me. In my experience, more bad than good comes from religion.
It would depend, if I didn't know the person...I'd probably go with 1 kitten. Kittens don't fuck things up. If the person was someone I cared for, there would be no amount of kittens worth their life, but I'd say there would be no amount of random assholes that would be worth their life, either.the_green_dragon said:I vote to save the one human!the December King said:Wait... you'd sacrifice ALL kittens for one person?!? I can see the argument that a human life is worth more than an animal's life- part of that attitude comes from our innate need to protect our own, part of it stems from our sense of superiority, whther deserved or not- but to kill all kittens for one person is overwhelming... I think I'd have to save the kittens, personally, but it's an intruiging scenario, to say the least!
How many kittens is worth a human life?
If the devil comes to you and says I will kill 1 human or X kittens. Choose. How many is X before you choose the human? 1? 10? 100? 1000? 10,000? All the kittens in the world?
What if that human was someone you love? How many kittens would you sacrifice then?

Uh, wow. Having higher thinking capabilities absolutely does make people better then kittens. Jesus, dial the back the rhetoric. I mean, the guy who said "who cares, it's an animal" is a fucking **** (tell me I'm wrong, mods) but that doesn't make your post any less silly.Screamarie said:*snip*
HAHAHAHAHAHA Oh, good god, you're serious. Humans couldn't put a fucking DENT in this planet even if we tried. It has been through so much worse then us and it's still fine. And people who are cruel sadistic cunts tend to be mentally unstable, i.e., THERE IS SOMETHING PSYCHICALLY WRONG WITH THEM. The healthy human mind has absolutely no desire to hurt anyone. If it did, we'd have killed each other off before the invention of fire. Not to mention the fact that animals are massive cunts, too. But I'm pretty sure about a million people have informed you of this already, so I'll go ahead and skip that part of my speech.Jean Hag said:Humans better than any other animal?

You say that, but if such an awful scenario were to happen, there's no way you'd pick the kitten. You may feel like shit afterward, but come on. We're talking about a person here, with thoughts, dreams, and feelings. You'd have to be one cold ************ to sacrifice a person for something you find inoffensive. Also, kittens break shit all the time. Just sayin'.DRes82 said:It would depend, if I didn't know the person...I'd probably go with 1 kitten. Kittens don't fuck things up. Sorry, I really didn't mean to offend anyone, just a quick post. That kitten died too. Are the Mormons that Mafia now? I'm surprised he didn't wake up with a kitten head in his bed.
Hell don't even call them Mormons. There not.
As for whoever did this they need to be killed in the most painful way possible. Hopefully via dying in concrete like he did to that poor kitten.
From what I've seen of Pen and Teller's show on PETA, they were associated with a guy who firebombed an animal research lab. So I guess you're not too far off with that description.Clearing the Eye said:PETA kills 90% of the animals they save. In one famous case, they hired an industrial freezer and placed every single animal they had just "rescued" from an animal testing lab into it, ending all their lives. They claimed this was to "end suffering," but many vets and wildlife experts argued the vast bulk of the animals were in fine health. The truth is, PETA just didn't want to pay to keep all those creatures around.piinyouri said:Damn cultists.
Throw one of your own in an open construction pit next time, leave the animals alone.
I despise PETA but this shit just get's me really riled up.
I'm pro animal rights and a staunch vegetarian, but I detest PETA. Trust me, they are horrible extremists, on par with any terrorist group.

Firstly, some basic facts about bacteria. They rule this planet. They have managed to successfully adopt to every single environment on this earth, from the driest subtropical deserts to the coldest Antarctic environments, including of course radioactive waste and the Earth's crust in temperatures we cannot survive. They are and have always been the most important and varied organic group on this earth and they make up more of the earth's biomass than humans and plants combined (there's more than 5 × 1030 (5 nonillion) bacteria on Earth), and our bodies need many of them to even function properly.
Take the very impressive mycobacterium which can survive and successfully reproduce in almost every environment, no matter how hot, cold or radioactive it might be, and has dominated this planet billions of years before us, and will continue to dominate this planet millions of years after we?re gone, and has killed billions of us during the time we've spent on this earth together.
The only difference between bacteria and us as that we depend on them whereas they do not depend on us. And to put things in more earthly terms, should be decide to start a war against, let's say mycobacterium, we would not be able to, with whatever technology we should apply, eradicate them. (because, even if we decide to nuke the shit out of this earth and destroy ourselves in the process, mycobacterium would still survive).
So in short, bacteria fucking rule this planet. Simple as that. If we are to be truly objective, that is. We could always say that humans are the dominate species because we managed to shoot a rocket to the moon, but then we're not really being truly objective.

I thought the overall point was human superiority. I mean the food chain isn't even a thing. It's just a mental concept of how animals feed of each other that they teach in first grade. Saying that humans are on the top of the food chain doesn't mean anything, unless you by extension imply that humans are superior to other animals, which we aren't necessary.lacktheknack said:But they're not at the top of the food chain, because they don't eat people.CarlMinez said:I'm pretty sure you're trolling me right now. And if you're going to mention that they use nutrients in corpses, then you've just entered food cycles, because plants do that too.

It was to painful, I really wish nothing had to suffer like that. It's cruel to be prey to another animal or be killed on the spot, but I find it all so much worse when you're dying/suffering slowly especially in this kitten's situation.
Teary eyed and sad as heck right now. Call me super sensitive, but that kitten deserved much better. Least it was saved and given a chance to live even though it didn't make it at the end. Also, who would ever... ever consider throwing anything alive down there as a sign or warning? That is brutally wrong, unless it was by chance the kitten getting into an accidental situation. But still, ... my sympathy towards the kitten.
Fine, I can work with that. It means you responded to someone on uneven terms, but hey, what happens happens.CarlMinez said:I thought the overall point was human superiority. That doesn't make it any less cruel. The thing could barely breathe, the concrete was pressing against its lungs. I don't care where we are on the food chain, we must hold ourselves to higher standards than this. No creature deserves to suffer like that.krazykidd said:I bet it was an accident . I think a big part of the problem is that if we're supposed to be so much better than animals, why do we still end up doing all of the worst, malicious things? We're supposed to be better than that, as part of what 'elevates' us from them.lacktheknack said:http://www.cracked.com/article_19904_8-species-that-are-threatening-to-swarm-globe.htmlJean Hag said:Humans better than any other animal?

People love to treat bad behavior as a human trait, but it's the weirdest romanticized notion ever. We DO see animals horribly destroying ecosystems, spawning too fast, and being absolute assholes - we have record of a chimp GRABBING AND EATING A HUMAN BABY.
Plus, humans have things like inter-species philanthropy. The only other species that has that that I remember is bottlenose dolphins (which happen to also have been recorded raping each other and killing other things for fun, how human).
