ok so ive been cracking my knuckles for about 15 years now, 20 years old as im typing this, and something weird just happened. the middle finger on my right hand wont crack its the weirdest thing if i bend it far enough it feels like its going to snap off, this has become a real annoyance. has anyone else had this problem? do i need to see a doctor?

Shouldn't crack yer knuckles, man. S'bad for you.

I couldn't say, but my dad pulled this funny thing once. He told my grandmother he couldn't crack his knuckle and asked her to help him and...well, you know what happens when you pull someone's finger.

Nope. I'm 18 and mine does that. Then again, i have a tumour blocking mine from cracking. My other fingers crack perfectly, though sometimes they do hurt if they havn't been cracked in a while. Trouble is, if i say "ow" any where near my lad, he automatically "flicks" me for hurting myself, even though he does it all the time.

I play the keyboard and i find cracking my knuckles actually loosens up the joints and makes them more, well, loose. Giving me ease on my playing.

Just give it some time it needs to get warmed up. I dont think that there is anything unhealthy about cracking your knuckles

I'll ask my brother who is a chiropractor later today and Thursday I'll post his response on this thread.

How far do you bend it back? Because everyone's finger will feel like snapping off with enough force.
i bend it pretty damn far i would say 90 degree angle before it starts to hurt

Actually there was a doctor who got an Ig Nobel prize for writing a journal article on cracking the knuckles on one hand for 50 years or some other ridiculous amount of time to see if he got OA in the said hand.
Funny right.

I don't crack my knuckles or any joints deliberately. I don't look forward to possible arthritis when I'm older.

I have that problem occasionally. From what I hear about the science behind knuckle cracking (which admittedly isn't much) there's some sort of gas that builds up in your joints and cracking your knuckles releases it. You can only crack once it gets to a certain level. Therefore, if you wait a while, You should be able to crack the joint again.

Knuckle cracking is caused by a rapid pressure change in a small vacuum that appears in a joint as it is rotated to the extreme of it's movement range. A number of studies have been conducted as to the tale that it is a contributing factor to arthritis, including a doctor who cracked every knuckle on one hand every day for forty years, and left the other hand well alone. He suffered no symptoms of arthritis in the test hand. A few studies have suggested that it can be a contributing factor towards reduced grip strength, but as a rock climber and a habitual knuckle cracker I've not had any problems.

I realise it's a little OT considering what the OP was talking about, but I just get a little peeved with people who tell me I'm going to get arthritis.

My god, I love cracking my joints. Fingers, neck, kneecaps. Favourites definitely the back though. Sweet lord when you hear it and feel it, it's like euphoria.

Go see the doctor.

And then let us know if we should stop cracking our knuckles before it's too late!!
