He complains about it being difficult to get something approved at his company (I'm guessing he means Konami here) so why doesn't he just move elsewhere and rely on his name to get a radical new project off the ground? He wouldn't be the first big name in the industry to start afresh to try new stuff.
I know, if Konami is focused on more mainstream, family friendly games then he should look elsewhere. Everybody knows that Konami hates making dark, mature, story driven content. :p

Honestly, I think he's complaining for complainings sake. If he can't make something like Breaking Bad then that's his own fault. Besides, do we really need to see Hank running around in a thong and stockings (as part of his standard uniform, of course)? Do we need to see Walter Jr. become a Cyborg Ninja? Metal Gear has always been ridiculous, and Kojima is the worst person for this job.
And Konami's totally kept that series at the same level of story quality and originality for the past decade... I mean, I don't even disagree with you, Kojima can probably get away with whatever the fuck he wants at this point, but your example is fucking terrible.
Por Que? What does anything you just said have to do with Konamis willingness to make dark or edgy games? The Silent Hill games may not be as good as they were, but they never exactly stopped being dark. The idea that Konami is unwilling to make games centered around serious subject matter is fundamentally absurd, as they have historically been pretty open tp mature content, and still are today.
"Making something out of the ordinary, that you wouldn't think of or be able to do, and making that happen while making it a success. That's something that I can empathize with and I'm also very jealous of it as a creator,"

They are definitely not that out of the ordinary anymore. I don't think he was really talking about it being too dark, rather that it was too out of the ordinary, and that is what I was talking about, not their relative darkness. If that didn't come across I apologize.

"the map is 200 times larger than ground zero"

Either Phantom pain is really large or ground zero is really small.

Hideo Kojima lamenting not thinking of "Breaking Bad" first is as farcical as Quentin Tarantino (or Catherine Hardwicke, if you prefer) regretting not thinking of "The Godfather".

In this thread: People who want to rant over how they think Metal Gear is shit. Dunno what I was expected, but I was still disappointed.

"I am the one who knocks!"
"You are the one who knocks?!"

As much as I love the first 3, his continued lapses into insanity since 4 onwards have really put me off, so the thought of him writing Breaking Bad is both sickening and hilarious. I mean, we could get blue nanometh, or have Heisen Snake get an eye patch and eat an armadillo he finds in the desert while cooking with nothing but technobabble and a can-do attitude.
It'd be more of an absurd comedy than an actual drama piece.

I really cannot imagine the amount of dafuq that would result from giving Kojima a TV series.

That guy wishes so hard that he was making pretty much anything but video games. It's kind of pathetic that he has so little interest in his own medium. Someone should really just give him a camera and tell him to go make a pretentious art film already. After all, Pacific Rim proved that we now have the technology to make a film about giant mechs. All he needs to do is add his unique brand of incoherently rambling monologues and he'd be in business.

(P.S. I have nothing against the game play of the Metal Gear franchise. It works as a game... as long as you can ignore the ridiculous writing.)

Why is everyone here interpreting Kojima's statement as him complaining or being whiny? A creator expressing his envy over somebody else's work has always been the highest form of compliment one could give.

And since I already know he's been watching BB because I've been following his twitter feed, this is old news to me. The only notable aspect of this article is the fact that he sings karaoke songs with Guillermo Del Toro. I'd pay a good amount of money to watch a taped version of that instead of Kojima's version of Breaking Bad.

Oh god, can you imagine what it would have been liie with him writing it?

"Colonel, this is Crysral Snake. I am the one who knocks."
"Snake, we told you in the mission breifing not to test the product. Just make the exchange and bring back the product."
"But Colonel, the colours..."

...Actually, go for it Kojima.

Yes because what is needed is Kojima Crazyness in a simple thing as Breaking Bad.
Seriously we need to add shady organisations that work in the shadow that are even if talked about unknowns. On what even if a statement is given that statement probably is wrong. In where .. I will stop here :!

No we don't need Kojima in Breaking Bad.

Well his stories are shit, no wonder he wishes he could come up with something people actually take seriously.

Kojima could learn a hell of a lot about writing a good story from the Break Bad writers.

And the Escapist gets more stupid and hatred spewing each day.

Kojima basically complimented Breaking Bad and half of these comments are just criticizing him.

"I am the one who knocks!"

*knocks*

"Huh? What was that noise?"

I love the MGS games, but Breaking Bad just wouldn't be the same if Kojima was at the reigns. It would be pretty hillarious to watch though.

As has already been said, Kojima Breaking Bad would either be the greatest or most terrible thing in the history of the world.

"I was very pissed off, because I wasn't the one to think of that story. That depressed me," he said. Kojima, who said he just got through the show's second season, said his feelings come in part from the fact that it would be very difficult to deal with the show's themes in his own medium. "The kind of topics they're handling in Breaking Bad, the way they express them and put them on screen, let's say I tried to create a game with similar topics and similar expressions, it would be hard to get approval in the company. The way these guys are putting the planning for this project and making it a commercial success - that's somewhere I feel very jealous as a creator."

Although, to be fair, I have a feeling this was pitched more as "A new Call of Duty" rather than "the players will feel like they should kill themselves." But, there are games that tackle some very dark themes, it's so sad they aren't the ones who are getting the most attention nowadays.

I do wonder how Kojima would react to the Telltale Walking Dead games, now that I think about it. >_>

Didn't you get the memo? Unconventional storytelling is shit. We need more indie games to present "deep and artistic" storytelling that really pushes the medium forward, and that also means that anything that is popular and not an indie game is shit.

In all seriousness, I think Kojima is a great storyteller who made great games that have a level of influence in the industry that a lot of other games can only dream of having. I'd honestly like to see him move on from Metal Gear and make something new that deals in the sort of themes he wants to put in his stories, however insane or serious they may be.
