Kojima: I'm Jealous I Didn't Think of Breaking Bad

I feel like everyone who has commented totally missed the point of the article. "Booo Breaking Bad would suck if Kojima made it!!"
First of all, you don't know that, secondly, he said, "The kind of topics they're handling in Breaking Bad, the way they express them and put them on screen, let's say I tried to create a game with similar topics and similar expressions, it would be hard to get approval in the company. The way these guys are putting the planning for this project and making it a commercial success - that's somewhere I feel very jealous as a creator."

It's a perfectly understandable sentiment because the vast majority of the current video game industry is largely corporate and customer-whining driven bullshit and it sucks.

The way you guys commenting about Breaking Bad, Hideo Kojima and MGS is so simple minded. I am disappointed by this forum's mentality considering that I was hoping for a better argument and explanation. I guess I overestimate people's opinion.

He complains about it being difficult to get something approved at his company (I'm guessing he means Konami here) so why doesn't he just move elsewhere and rely on his name to get a radical new project off the ground? He wouldn't be the first big name in the industry to start afresh to try new stuff.
I know, if Konami is focused on more mainstream, family friendly games then he should look elsewhere. Everybody knows that Konami hates making dark, mature, story driven content. :p

Honestly, I think he's complaining for complainings sake. If he can't make something like Breaking Bad then that's his own fault...
At this point (and specially after Levine departure), I think Kojima is pretty much the only AAA designer that has carte blanche to do pretty much whatever he wants with his game. And its not like Konami would threat to fire him. So, I agree with you. Cool that he liked Breaking Bad, but complaining that he didn't do it before? Yeah, good one, Hideo...

Quick, someone photoshop Walter and Mike's heads onto Old Snake and Liquid Ocelot during the finale fight.
Edit: ...maybe Kojima DID write breaking bad. Mike did use an HK Mk23 (socom, with the kac suppressor) in the episode where he was clearing out the chemical warehouse. And it was a sneaking mission. O_O *blew my own mind*

Huh, I read it as more that he's pissed with himself and his own limitations, and that even if he could envision and write something like Breaking Bad that the studio wouldn't go for it (maybe because it's too normal?). I've seen novel writers say before, too, that they really like this or that genre but that they cannot write it well. That's how I interpreted what he said -- that his brain just doesn't work in a way that would allow him to create something like Breaking Bad, and he really wishes it could to the point that he's angry with himself (or the world?) over it.
