Soo.. you're saying "hooray for shovelware!"?
No, I'm saying that I hate when a game is delayed.
Here's the thing, he just said that delaying a game is worse than releasing an unfinished game, can you stand for a view like that? Of course, optimally, both options should be avoided, but if our friend Kojima, had to choose, you'd get the shovelware now instead of the great game later.

Raiden wasn't all that bad, honestly. Not if you knew beforehand you'd be getting him.

It was an interesting way to handle gameplay/plot discrepancies, actually. If you hear all about how Snake is this legendary soldier and spy, and then you're controlling him and WHOOPS ran straight into a security camera, it lessens that impact. Not only did playing as the rookie make it a lot more plausible when you (the player) screwed up, it meant that Kojima could properly portray Snake as this badass mentor figure. It worked really well.
Thank you.

I thought I was the only one who liked Raiden. I never played MGS1 so I never grew with Snake, so that might be the reason, but I found Raiden to be an interesting and emotional character with a good story.

And releasing an unfinished game is not?

You missed the point entirely. The moment a developer announces a release date they are basically telling their fans this: "Trust us, we're gonna deliver the game by XX.XX.XXX". They're making a promise. Now, if the developer does not succeed in releasing the game at the given date, like Kojima said, they're betraying the expectation of the fans.

If they do not want to have deadlines then they can simply say "we'll release it when it's ready", just like Valve does with Half Life 2 and just like Blizzard does with Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2.

So, it's either you make no promises and release the game when you believe it's ready without getting the expectation of the ones interested in buying the game high, or you promise those fans a release date only to potentially disappoint them.

There's an even greater crime than any of those... Releasing a game pre-maturely. If I was to be given a choice between releasing it early, or missing a stated release date, I'd pick the former in a heartbeat.

Look at Star Wars: The Force Unleashed to see what I mean.

I'd rather have a seriously late game withall the bugs fixed than an early or on-time game that crashes when you look at it cross-eyed.

There is a crime even greater than that my friend ...

Rushing a game to make a holiday release date

Kojima: "It probably takes a long time to earn back trust [from the fans] that has been lost."

Yeah, trust is an important thing. I mean you would never deceive your fans like oh, I don't know, advertising the much anticipated sequel to your hit game as you playing a certain popular protagonist only secretly he is replaced by a mincing emo-boy after the first 30 minutes of gameplay...

oh wait... metal gear solid 2.

A small reminder of the betrayal:

This - ladies and gentlemen - is a greater crime.
Because he has nicer legs than some women, or because he has so little to hide?

What about forcing an old man to go through a tunnel full of microwaves?

As for this, I'd much rather a game get delayed if it means that it will be better. After all, it's not as though I can't find another game to play, be it a new one or one I already own.

I find it interesting that people keep saying something that has been said about 30 times in this thread alone already, just to get their post counts up. Instead of going into a discussion about the sensible replies and potentially increasing their post count even more.

OT: Tbh, I agree with the people that agree with Kojima, he's not saying that he'd rather release a bad game, he's saying that when he got everybody's hopes up by giving a definite release date and then destroying that hope by delaying it. He goes against his philosophies as a game designer. Aka, he's saying only set a definite release date, when you know that game is going to be at a acceptable standard at that time. This actually improves games as a end result as game developers can then take it easy, and don't have the pressure of a deadline and thereby rushing it.

Says the man who delayed Metal Gear Solid 4 ONE WHOLE YEAR! Mind you, it was the only one in the series I truly liked, so I'll let it slide.

I took one look at that game and told myself that it was going to be awesome. Of course, I never got to find out.

Oh, but it must also be said: Duke Nukem Forever

... So I guess that rather than delay games, it's just better to pump out substandard ones?
